Okay. Let's start off with accepting the fact that Chucklefish made a few mistakes. They might have broken a few promises, or did something wrong elsewhere. Now, we have to remember that chucklefish is an INDIE game studio, and that this is their first game. They are not Activition, nor are they Bungie, or any other major gaming studio supported by big enterprises and companies. They are inexperienced and new, so of course they will make mistakes.

Next, i realized many in the community have been saying that starbound will be the next 'towns' and that it will go the same way. Down. We, the community, need to realize that we are the ones that are causing this. Our actions are affecting the developing team. Check it out on twitter. They're getting depressed and discouraged. If this continues, not only will they give up entirely, they will lose confidence in themselves. IN the end, it will all be on us.

Chucklefish already realized that they make a mistakes, and they are working HARD to make up for it. Everyone makes mistakes, and the best of us learn from our falls . As a community, we should find it in ourselves to forgive them, and support them with all we can offer. But this is not what we are doing. We are only adding oil to fire. Therefore, i sincerely hope that us, the community, will start encouraging the developing team and support them all the way.

Unlike what most people believe, great games are not fueled my money. They are fueled by a great community. We should aim to become like that. A community that is understanding, fun and supportive. And ultimately, the community that makes the game amazing. Chucklefish will definitely be grateful if we understand their problems and help them with it.

So please, no more hating. Just keep supporting. Fight on, Chucklefish.

I'm pretty sure that there will be an improvement of the community climate when when we start seeing some tangilbe results of the team "working HARD to make up for it.". The seeming lack of progress have left people worried and skeptical about the future of the project, as soon as the updates start arriving things will probably calm down.

Not to be that guy, but trying to convice people to stop hating is not going to work. BUT HEY! It's worth a shot.

Also, supportive and pushy are two different things

I feel sorry for this but.. the first thing that comes to my mind is "give me a break". If i have seen anything wrong with this community so far is that this keeps going on over and over. All these moral crusades are getting bad. You could just ignore all the hate, simply state what you think about the game, then leave it at that. So when the devs do see anything, it is criticism or praise instead of wars being waged over their forums.
If i was a dev, i would be okay with people hating how i run things and such, it inevitably happens. You cannot please everyone. But when the community as a whole is tearing itself to shreds, that would be enough to put me in a foul mood.

Drama. Here's how it really goes.

    $4 million+ in sales.
A very small minority yelling very loudly and venomously.
A vast majority quietly and happily playing, or waiting patiently and contently for full release.

Chucklefish employees are professional adults. If they take anything that 1% spews personally, they deserve the blues it brings. Any position that comes in direct contact with customers is aware of, no.. EXPECTS, that the hateful few are the absolute LOUDEST. They are to be gingerly dealt with, depending on company policy, and then ranted about for a few minutes, and summarily forgotten until the next episode.

Please that's beta and this is the internet. People complain everywhere and about everything.
It's very hard to please the majority of the players, so while some are complaining others are just, as said above, quiet and happy.

As much as I wish it, I honestly doubt these pleas will change anything by the end of the day. Knowing what to do is EASY, but DOING IT ins't quite so. People will complain because they simply can't keep their mouth shut with how much displeased they are (because apparently they think they're the only ones displeased in all this...) and then others will join the conversation because they hate seeing whiners but end up becoming whiners themselves - which is where I'm included too, I admit.

You can't change others to please yourself but you can, however, change how you deal with them. With this in mind, I think its for the best if I just start avoiding the forums too, or perhaps just keep my posts to a minimum. I'm just here to pass time anyway, the only thing I care about in these forums is to see whether or not there's an update. If everytime I come here is to start making stupid arguments and getting myself annoyed at others, I'd rather not waste my time here at all. I've already got enough problems in my life to deal with, no need to add the internet to that noise too if I can help it.

And if you people are smart, you will see it too.
    Cheers :)

There is also the group of people who quietly abandoned Starbound. Saying that the "silent part" plays happily is euphemistic. Some servers have closed or lost the majority of their players. Normally, I'm not posting much in these threads, only posting some videos or Screenshots in Fan Art. But that's my personal experience I made outside the forums. There's a bunch of people talking that there is a small minority yelling, because only negative opinions are expressed. That's not right. There is also a bunch of people who don't care anymore and moved on.

There is quite a few misconceptions which really need to be corrected.

One of the greatest misconceptions in the world of gaming. Indie does not mean "inexperienced" "new" and what ever delusions people hold.
Indie means Independent. They are independent from a publisher which has licensed the IP (Intellectual Property)
    • Double Fine is an Indie Studio - which is made up of Veteran developers.
    • 21 Cans is an Indie Studio - made of Veteran Developers
    • Roberts Industries - Is an Indie studio which employees 150 developers. [ Star Citizen ]
    • Chuckle Fish - Is an Indie Studio made up of Veteran Developers

You actually managed to insult them - because one thing most of the developers on the CF team is not, is inexperienced. Considering some of the members have 10+ years in the industry.

    Another great Misconception. "Towns"
Towns development team has always planned to stop development in Feburary 2014. Towns hired a 3rd party developer to maintain the project. He was offered 15% of new sales to "maintain the game post release" (very important terminology).
It is due to lack of SALES <-- not lack of INTEREST which stopped towns development. In other words, without money developers die of starvation. Because people seem to fail to realize you need money to continue developing a product.
    http://www.pcgamer.com/2014/05/07/t...s-after-its-sole-developer-abandons-the-game/

Community really does not matter in game development at all. Most games are developed without little or no participation from the community.
Great games are made by passionate developers who create a game as if they are raising a child. That is the only absolute truth. Once the parents start getting bad advice from others, the game starts to fail. You question if you are raising the child right, and follow an unfortunate trend of other parents (repeating same tried and tested mechanics - no innovative gameplay)

Community simply an additive. Which extends the life of the game. But are not the developers of the game in the end of the day.
Do the developers need encouragement? Yes. Everyone likes to be praised.
Should you praise for everything done? Of course not. That is how you raise spoiled brats.

To put it simply, in terms of development there was no mistakes. The biggest mistake is how News is handled. Before the Beta was released News multiple times a week and in high detail. Once beta was released, all of a sudden news is superficial and a paragraph at most. Once a week. Once you provide one style of news and drop it. People are definitely going to be angry about it.

The key to building a good PR relation with the community is to maintain regularity. Make highly detailed report once a week on Friday.
    • Learn to stop spreading resources too thin. For example the monthly news letter. If you can't maintain a consistent news flow, a monthly news letter is unnecessary fat you can cut. Until you can maintain a regular news flow and have resources to expand that community interaction.
    • Official Forums are the official forums. It shouldn't be community needs to search resources outside official forums to find information, then some one in the community disseminate it here. It should be the news is found on the official forums, then disseminated to other places.

I completely understand the advantage of reddit. There is no problem posting there. But still it should be mentioned on the official forums a post of such was at least made on reddit. An to have a redirect link telling others to visit it. But such a simple thing is over looked.

I think they are doing fine when it comes to development
But when it comes to regularity of news and dissemination of news. They get a hardy "f"
I personally check around 3 - 4 places just to make sense of all the news. Instead of it being easily available in a single place.

A bit, well, strange that you would consider saying to an angry person to calm down and that they would, but what the hey,it might just work.

Its all just temporary, but I and many more will remain skeptical till their hard work is actualy shown, tis all.

Not really, the thing about that is if they straight up delete the posts, then yes they would be censoring, but just locking them on an account of there already being a dozen of these wouldn't really. I certainly hope that they don't just let these threads be constantly created though. :/

I don't understand why everyone's fighting. Chucklefish isn't perfect, they've made mistakes, and they've got to own up to them. You can't defend Chucklefish all the time. Constructive criticism is good and helps them to rectify their weak points. Some of it might be on the hostile side, but the message they convey hold legitimacy.

At the same time, with all the scathing criticism they get, it's no wonder that their spirits are a bit low. You can say "well, if they couldn't handle it, why did they go into game dev business in the first place?", and you'd be kind of right, but it doesn't excuse the really harsh words they get. You wouldn't say it to their faces (at least, I hope you wouldn't), so don't say it online. Also, you won't die waiting for Starbound, even if it takes them 2 years from now (which would still be quite ridiculous), there are other things to help tide you over until that time.

    TL;DR:

People really exaggerate how bad this community is. From what I've seen, 99% of the regulars on here are very reasonable, and any criticism they level at CF has been pretty damn polite. There always seems to be a couple guys/gals that are unhealthily invested in the game and create embarrassingly obvious bait threads, but they come and go (or get banned). I think chucklefish needs to realize that a lot of the forum users are simply bored, and those types of "drama" threads attract attention because there hasn't really been anything else to talk about. They shouldn't take it personally, and maybe take a break from reading the subreddit and forums for awhile until they release an update because bored/boring people will gossip, that's just human nature.

My suggestion would be to merge some of the suggestion forums with the general discussion, or simply allow more discussion of game mechanics and whatnot in general discussion. It could help funnel attention away from bait/drama/whatever-you-want-to-call-them threads, and stimulate more constructive discussion. IDK how best to do that, just a thought.
