We can't get this on Steam soon enough.

Well.. friend of mine got it waiting for Starbound. (Didn't like it funny enough.)
So, they might actually be succeeding in getting sales by doing this.

Darkout has a different style that takes getting used to after playing all those pixely indies, but it isn't bad. I really like how the caverns were made and that the terrain isn't "blocky."

I'd love to elaborate, but that is like trying to explain why I prefer this color over this one.

The thing is, even though release dates are the same, there are already gameplay videos out, tons more to come, and people who review games.

They will show which is superior graphically and through gameplay, and this is also a Beta that is already being extremely well received. Just imagine what will happen on the final release.

Darkout is not an attempt to 'steal sales away from their declared competition'.

Darkout has been on Desura for awhile, and only just recently has it been greenlight'd and put onto Steam.

Darkout is a great game in and on it's own. Try not to make accusations against developers trying to make a living.

 

There more games like it the better, competition is always healthy.

 

Not to mention they might have submitted the game before/after Starbound, and Valve did the same thing and made them wait until after the sale to update the game to their store.

If it were up to Chucklefish the beta would have been out last week.

 

If a game is truly that good, it will sell good no matter what game will be released at the same date.

Besides that, 2D platformers have always been there. No need to get all fanboyish that Starbound invented the 2D sandbox.
You could say that Starbound is a rip-off from the Super Mario-series, if we are going to talk about "ripping" concepts from other games.

Guys, please, I feel like I am back in the "Terraria is a 2D rip-off from Minecraft"-era.

Darkout looks pretty good, I don't see why the hate for it.

 

Sounds very fanboyish... I looked at it and it looks pretty cool. I think that it is up to toe individual which one looks more like a game they want to play...

 

Because it's a thing that's like our thing except a bit different. Is this your first time on the Internet or something?

To be fair though this thread only has few.

 

Looks like my fears weren't justified afterall. Starbound came out with a blast. Instant number 1 seller and it is right now the third most played game on Steam with over 50,000 people in game! Incredible!

I think it's the Darkout devs who have been hurt by this. They are probably wishing they didn't go live the same day as Starbound!

Seriously guys, while Starbound is amazing, it's not the first 2d sandbox platformer rpg ever made.
Games like Darkout, Signs of Life, Crea, Windforge, eos and epic inventor were being developed before StarBound was first announced.

Starbound already has the strongest budget/media backing out of all the 2d sandbox games since 2012 (likely holding most of the market share);
and shooting down other games/indie developers in the genre for trying to coexist, is just sad.
