The troll part is true, as the community grows, the forum will inevitably start filling up with trolls.

This is a really nice community and everyone is pretty nice and respectful heck the few arguments I've ran across have been civil and handled in a proper manor so kudos to them

Trolls are like the Queen Mab is that Merlin TV mini-series.

Just ignore them (and quietly report them if they go too far) and they'll eventually go away.

I'm on the opposite side of the fence, I see this community as way too whiny and impatient at times. Threads like these have a fun habit of appearing to be self congratulatory, "hooray nobody moaned about a beta for the last week or so, we must be amazing!". The 50 page threads and depositions on whether or not there will be an open beta or not, the pointless hype, and threads like this kinda kills the community "experience" for me. I did not come to these forums last year to be part of a community, I came here to learn about a game. A game that is way to under developed to even merit a discussion a times.

I have a hard time understanding people like you. Why always try to see the bad side of things. And if something isn't for, just leave it.

blind optimism and being overly nice to one another is not a trademark of a good gaming community. people should speak their mind, not have to step on eggshells since it isn't the 'nice' thing to say.

also, although seeing the bad side of things at all times is not entirely a good thing, it is much better than seeing only the good side. the starbound community (like many communities, but starbound is horrible with this), is one massive blob of groupthink and circle-jerking. a bunch of people that refuse to be themselves due to the fact they won't fit in and get friends on internet forums. this counteracts everything that the internet should be an avenue for, especially for the more anti-social: having the proper anonymity to be who you want to.

growing a backbone, not taking jokes and things to offense, and having fun while being oneself, not rehashing stupid memes, would make this community about fifteen times better.

if anything, conflict makes for a healthier community than circle-jerking.

Every single forum out there, has trolls and idiots. Just like real life, has a great deal of idiots. It's just being able to deal with them that comes down to it.

Really. I highly doubt the community is going to go down the drain anytime soon, the modding community might, similar to how Minecraft went. But the actual Starbound community have been pretty good up till now, and I've been on this forum for a year or so. There's a few people that are blunt, and some that have some weird opinions, but you can find those in real life as well. So yeah. =P

There's not a lot you can do about a sad simple fact in life: People can be idiots. Idiocy leads to trolling, and the best way to combat that is ignoring it. Try and oppose an idiot troll, and you give them exactly what they want.

People are free to speak their mind. I've dissented with the general opinion and we have a normal discussion about it. The problem is there are a number of people who dissent in a very insulting manner (hey look what you're doing) and that is most definitely not good for the community.

One thing I do think the community could do is be a bit nicer to newcomers who haven't found the FAQ yet and ask questions that have been asked before. There's no need to be so hostile towards them.

I do indeed like this community also, and I easily draw stark contrast between it and some of the other games forums I frequent. For example, I am an active member of the MWO forums, and that place is, to quote Obi Wan, "a wretched hive of scum and villainy".

It's called critical thinking, and this is a product that Chucklefish is willing to exchange for my earned capital, you don't just buy a car and be glad that it just has windows. This is not some sort of friendship club, social network site, or other random online forum, this is a place were we discuss the merits of a game that has yet to have a release date that has been released. My apologies if I don't immediately quiver in my chair for a paltry screen shot , praise the developers every breath, and remain content upon reading that there could be a chance that the release date could be found a Gregorian calender. I honestly want this game, but good things do not come through only mindless praise, critiques are necessary to a good product.

Fifteen times better for who? The people that would enjoy that type of environment 15 times more? There's nothing wrong with fostering a positive community. From my experiences, communities where people are allowed to slur and attack each other with the logic of "get over it" eventually lose the majority of the population. Once that happens, we're often left with the "elite few" who, while close friends and who have a lot of fun on the forum, are under the impression that "we might not have as much members, but we're a lot better than most other places." (Which by the way, would be considered circle-jerking by these definitions) Obviously 100% of the people in that community, then, would agree that community type is much better. But that's just my personal experiences, I'm not going to say all forums/sites/games are like this. Hell, I've seen a "hugbox" community undertake a whole new staff, with a whole new set of rules. It went from a hugbox to a moshpit. Active member count literally dropped like a rock. I would by no stretch of the imagination call that healthy.

I honestly agree though, people needn't take shit so seriously. There's a fair amount of drama, criticism, and conflict that goes on here, regardless of whether people choose to see it or not. But times are changing. The internet's audience is expanding more and more all the time. People as young as 4 and as old as 90. Sites need to adapt to allow for a broader audience, these days. I fail to see how this site is inherently circle-jerkish though. That's just how people choose to act. And other people judge the people who act like that as if they're the entire population. The site is built on a neutral foundation. People are just a lot calmer, friendlier, and more relaxed as a majority. There's not a lot of conflict here because there's not a whole lot to conflict about. But it exists. It's there, and like any other conflict, it solves and resolves itself one way or another.

But maybe I'm just reading too much into this. I do agree that conflict and criticism can make a community stronger. At the same time, people don't need to treat each other like crap, or do crappy things anonymously just because they can't be stopped. If I say something hurtful, intentionally, the logic of "They need to get over it" doesn't justify me. It'd be massively arrogant for me to think that way. "I have freedom of speech, so everyone should take what I say at face value and I shouldn't have to say it in a nice way." It'd be self-righteous of me to think that.

So, tl;dr, conflict is pretty good at making a community stronger. But if a community is strong enough to not have much conflict to begin with isn't a bad thing either. People really do need to lighten up though, honestly. In the end, we should all be trying to have fun, and do our best to make sure as many people are as we can. It's just a coincidence that most people are having fun in a positive environment.
