"We’ve decided NOT to wipe characters or worlds." Well that would have been nice

Except upon launch of my game today I found that my characters had indeed been wiped and deleted, am i the only one experiencing this.

 

Maybe they are talking about after today's patch, what source did you hear this from?

 

They wiped characters on the previous patch, when is the last time you played?

 

First update (the one with the major general changes and the like) wiped characters.

The one that fixed each crafted weapon doing 9999 damage didn't. (the hotfix that happened later today)

 

You probably missed yesterdays update

 

Ahhh yess there were two patches, if you missed the first one you got it along with the fix which yes, wiped your saves.

 

When was the previous patch? I played yesterday around 10am PST, then launched about 30 minutes ago to find my characters wiped.

 

I guess I missed the first of the two patches then.

 

I'm sorry bud, but where did you hear "We're not wiping characters or saves anymore"?

 

The previous patch was late night 12/9/2013, sorry mate

 

The previous patch was around this morning if I recall well.

Also, know that those decsions are probably not easy for the devs. When a character wipe has to be done it probably has less to do with the devs "feeling" that it was neccessary to better represent the tweaked gameplay and probably more because they had to work with codes which would have led with conflict with your savegame and rendered it nonfunctional anyway even if the character had not been wiped.

Stuff like that happens much more often in development than people think.

They basically have to weight down the choice between "Do we leave a huge glaring bug that can only be fixed by diving deep in the code at the risk of infuriating those players because of the required wipe of the character they spent hours working on, or do we try to leave them able to put more hours in their favored characters at the cost of leaving a bug that could continue being a source of more complaints about broken gameplay?"

That's the kind of situations and decisions they probably have to face when they work on the game right now, like Tiy just did for 19 hours straight before finishing his work for the previous patch release today.

 

It was actually one of the twitters if I remember right, but it was only referring to the hotfix for craft weapons. (which before than was said to maybe wipe saves)

 

Beta is hard, but the game is making improvements in order to be better. We are here to help that process. It's beautiful, amazing... horrifying thing. lol.

No. It's not that simple.

They also have to wonder then about any bug reports they get about any other or new issues. Is it a legitimate bug to the new code? Or is it something specific to an older character that they didn't wipe? It's not necessarily entirely obvious. Especially if they continue to non wipe for several patches. Weird things can happen and creep in. Suddenly they are chasing their tails to figure out bugs that actually only exist because of some archaic character interacting with something new. Things they wouldn't normally have to deal with at all, but only have to because they appeased those who complained.

You act like it's only done to somehow "force" people into the testing they desire. It's as least as much about CONTROL of what exists to help identify and fix bugs more easily and quickly. Less unknown variables. You need that in a testing environment. Control and stability and certainty as to what is what.

Not to mention as the game develops, actually having to convert old characters to work in new systems is a lot of work. Work they don't really have to do, as it won't help the game in the long run. No one at release will be buying the game and trying to convert a legacy character. This is a beta only issue. It's a waste of time to keep converting those characters.

It's ultimately asking them to spend inordinate amount of time updating old characters, for no good reason, only to end up potentially adding new, unexpected variables and problems to the code. Things that will get in the way of their PROPER testing and figuring things out.

You guys have a sense of entitlement and the very wrong attitude to be in this test. They couldn't have been more clear from the start that there would be wipes, and NOT to participate in this stage if that bothers you.

But many of you keep whining and trying to find ways to convince them that it's ok to leave your chars. You are selfishly demanding to have your entertainment be unhampered at the cost of the proper development of the game.

Get over it. Please? Or wait for release to play. Already they are caving in a little bit by not wiping again today, when they probably should have. They are doing so almost certainly because of all the damn moaning and crying. This is HURTING this games PROPER development.

Ya, you paid something to get in. But you really didn't pay to beta test. You paid to pre-purchase the full game, which is not out you. As a reward for doing so, you have been given the privilege of being part of the beta test.

Privilege. They owe you nothing in the beta. They simply owe you the final product.

It's their product to decide how to work on it.!

 

Actually I like the post, thanks for the further detailling of the reasoning of this kind of process. I actually posted what I did in an attempt to explain those people who are getting angry that they really should not be.
Mind if I repost what you posted here whenever I find someone complaining again about characters wipe?

 

Somehow, I seem to have a bug (win7 64bit) that wipes my savegame whenever i clean my system temp. Anyone heard of this before??
