Right now, there is no reason to care about water other than aesthetic purposes. Later, when we're able to move it around or collect it (hopefully) there needs to be a reason to do so. In Minecraft, you need water to craft potions. There, it's incredibly important. Maybe have a hydroplant object that requires water to supply electricity to cells which then act as both ship fuel and a means to power machinery for your base. Perhaps there could be higher grade turrets, locked doors and other machines that require a power source to function and these cells would be that source, which you'd get from the hydroplant object.
i believe there has been a rumor(correct me if its not a rumor)about water planets so when they put that in water should get a use along with it
I can just imagine making a huge water hydroplant and generating power cells that can be placed in machinery to power our bases, maybe give bases protection for tiles in a radius based on how much power the base has. The upkeep per 24/h could increase for every X amount of tiles you claim and you could deposit power cells into the base main reactor where the system would then check for them when the upkeep occurs. Having water be a means to generate these cells would not only give water a very important use but also eliminate the issue people have with not having incentive to colonize planets.
But wouldn't this rapidly deplete our already small water supplies? Even if we were given ocean planets, surely over time the water level would fall? I think regular coal generators, or even Thermal ones (Placed down near the core) could do wonders.
I don't imagine a water planet would have finite water and even if it did, for a hydroplant to use up enough water to drain an ocean, the requirement set for a power cell would have to be pretty huge. And the water wouldn't degenerate, it would just need to either be within proximity to a plant or move past it somehow. It doesn't need to get deleted. Maybe the hydroplant would need coal to be used. Or maybe if the water needs to pass through the plant machine, the water could be on some kind of filter system where a pump ejects water from point A, and a drain receives it at point B then sends it through pipes back to point A, cycling it over and over and as it passes the plant it generates power.
Having pipes and pump could also be useful to get the random places deep underground to have their water moved up for such purposes. If they eventually have us creating colonies, keeping our people well hydrated could be part of what contributes to colony growth. I want a moat. Maybe be able to flush it with poison water. So I completely like this idea of also making it practical in even more ways. We have a MATTER MANIPULATOR. And I think water matters. (Ha, see what I did there?)
If any of you are interested and willing to do a bit of RP there are mods ATM that can let you work with (and give you a use for)liquids as well as a build your own colony
I thought a pump like system with pipes would be nice. Could help to create ponds and such. Would also be useful in getting rid of poison pits and lava pools.
I think "Getting rid of" is the wrong term. Perhaps re-purpose would be better. If you just want to get rid of them, place dirt over them or delete the background blocks. Re-purpose being sucking it up, storing it, and then making your own pools, without having to place your entire base around an already existing <desired liquid> source.
A mod like colony should be put in the main game IMO. Havent gone deep into what it does but the whole idea of inhabiting a planet by building a colony and managing it appeals to me in a huge way.
I am having enough trouble keeping my torches from falling off during a storm let alone look after a colony
You also need water for farming and it is used I lots of mods. also allows fishing, which is usually my main source of food!
I don't know if anyone else has said something about buckets, but this is a thread where I posted something about buckets. Here it is: community.playstarbound.com/index.php?threads/liquids.69948/
Some other person talked about perhaps there being an upgrade for the matter manipulator so that it could carry liquids. At least would be realistic for obtaining Lava, whereas a regular iron bucket would just melt.
Yea. That's why i said in the post that there should be a Higher-Tier Metal Bucket, one that can contain lava.
