im not really a fan of "waiting for things to smelt" like in minecraft, i personally think that's something minecraft should stick with

however i wouldn't mind something like this below

anything you would smelt(iron ore, gold ore, whatever ore, etc. etc.) can be smelted nearly instantly(ala terraria)
but for certain ores/materials such as "ghostly dark ore with black aura" could take maybe a few seconds to smelt(or you might need a special smelter to smelt it, anyone remember the hell forge and adamantite forge from terraria?)

i personally prefer the "click to smelt, hold right click to quick stack all ore into bars" option terraria had, i could smelt my stuff, and immediately turn it into gear right after or put it away for later
but then again, "different strokes for different folks"

It should take time, but not create tedium. Should preferably something you can leave doing it's own thing while your body with other tasks.

Best is to wait i learn the hard way of waiting... when things are been made you can do other task then come back for your stuff talking about killing two birds with one stone...

I kinda agree w/ the OP, in MC i had no issues w/ smelting iron or any other metals, however when I build something like a castle that uses like 10 inventories full stone bricks it's a pain to smelt all of that cobble.

Honestly though I doubt there will be a smelt time, there might however be a build time on vehicles and buildings, which is fine by me

true true DEF is much more impotent then ATK...

Well, seeing as it's all futuristic and whatnot, I would imagine that downtime for smelting/synthesizing would be infinitesimal at best. I enjoyed the crafting system in both games, but since Starbound seems to be taking the "remember, it's just a game" approach, I don't think there would be waiting. Again, if there is, I don't think it'll be anything more than a second or two, banking on some sort of high-tech synthesizer.

Because the game will be in future, smelting can be made in a few seconds, using some technology. On the other way, waiting for it like in MC made your materials more valuable (at least for me - "now only smelting and I can finally make my armor/sword/patapon/etc" :D).

But, as I said wrote above, we'll be in the future.
    This is what I approve.
But, we could make parts of the vehicle first, then put it all together (for example: build arms, legs and torso of the mech and then connect all the "sections"). This would be pro (again, at least for me)

Yeah, that would be nice, especially if the different parts weren't specific to a single vehicle design. One might use no arms, another might use 4 legs... I guess if this were the case it would make more sense for the building of vehicles to be instant, as you're spending all of the time building the individual parts.

My understanding of the buildings is that you're able to place pre-built structures which I'm assuming you purchase using the in-game currency, and logically I wouldn't think the building would immediately appear from nothing, but if it did I don't think it would be a problem either, the game looks pretty fast paced so I wouldn't be surprised if everything was instant.

Well, I thought about mechs when I was writing this. Only mechs. But some Star Wars' X-Wings could be nice, too :3
And buildings will be hand-made rather than instant imo. There must be some building in sandbox game. :p

oh, of course, there's always the option to build your structures yourself, I actually doubt I'll place any pre-built structures, aside from those that might be required.
