I spent more money just for the forum badge, I want people to feel inferior when they look at it.

then don't spend the money? You sound pretty cynical, to be honest. I read somewhere that the devs were hoping to get $40k, and look at what's happening. They're indie developers, do you think they had the time and money to fully focus on Starbound before they were given half a mil? It's to support them, it's to help make the game, it secures our key for the game, and more than likely we're getting it for cheaper than full release will be. People aren't spending on the higher tiers because they go 'OH BOY A HAT DESIGNED BY ME IN AN INDIE GAME AND ONLY FOR $500.' It's a way for people who are able to spend more money to support the development, the gifts are nothing but 'thank you' items.

You get to have the statue, and everything above that tier, meaning: Statue, credits, make your own gun, make your own hat, tier badge, etc. It's a little worth it for that, but still, I wouldn't buy it. But some people have the money to do this, so I can't complain to them for wanting to do this with their money.

It's all just not clear. Somewhere 2013, maybe end 2013, or maybe 2014 ("come on guys, whats waiting a lil bit more?"). And even then it's not clear whether we get something at all. I agree it seems doubtful Starbound would "vanish", but many other games in development did, Kickstarter is a very good source of a few of those games. And believe it or not, I rather not put down money (even $15) for something that might be turned into nothing more then "thin air". While a release date will not unquestionably say the game will be released, it does give comfort in seeing an actual date. Specially when putting down money.

This game isn't going to vanish, and it will come out 2013. It's not a big conspiracy theory.

The point isn't to get anything. The tiers and shit are just suppose to make you feel like you got atleast something for preordering. You put money down, and something comes along with it . That's like saying "why would I buy a happy meal, I don't like the toy selection this week". Tbh, I don't wanna use the soundtrack, I wanna wait. I don't care about new races. But I'm damn glad I preordered. And I'm pretty sure that preordering gets you access to the beta, and I don't know anyone that doesn't want to play the game way early. The question I have is, if money isn't an issue, WHY no preorder? If you like the game, want to play it early with your friends, then pay a measly 15 dollars. I doubt anyone who had easy access to their money (ie credit cards and accounts) bought the game as soon as possible. Actually all 9 of my friends went and bought it as soon as it released . One of them even begged his mom. I don't really see the point in the thread other than making other people uneasy about pre ordering .

I can understand why you didn't pre-order it, but why did you have to announce it on the forums? Also, you were saying, "Thats nice, but seeing how much money they ALREADY collected, I don't think they particularly need it that much." is pretty 'silly.' What if the AAA people showed you their pre-order amount of money; it would show just how big of a gap it is compared to this indie game. So, I'm going to guess that you pre-ordered a AAA game with-out realizing that it had millions of dollars already invested, but did that stop you from pre-ordering, just because "They already collected a good amount of money?" I pretty much doubt that stopped you (If you did ever pre-order a AAA game.) from pre-ordering. Most Indie game developers NEED the money, it just happens that this is an extremely popular and got a very large amount of money compared to other indie games.

I agree with the majority of the rest of the posters. I understand if you have your reservations because you've been burnt before, but don't be a negative Nancy. Just because people are genuinely excited and willing to throw their money into the ring, doesn't mean you should feel the need to justify why you aren't. We all have our reasons.

You do realise that anyone who's paying over $75 isn't paying for the rewards, but putting a lot of their hard-earned cash down to support the devs in making a fantastic game that will last them hundreds of hours of playtime. We can tell from the roadmap that the fundamental parts of the game are pretty much complete and overall they're 70% finished, the devs don't want to put a specific release date because if they find a problem which takes them a while to fix, it might delay the release and make people upset. It's much easier just to be quiet until the game's pretty much done. I haven't got around to preordering yet, but when I do I'll get the most expensive tier I can afford to show the devs how much I'm looking forward to the game, and you don't need to do that, just get the pixel tier and be happy for when the game arrives! :chucklefish:

I agree... in some cases its best to say nothing about it than to say something that may end up not being true

The way I see the pre-ordering setup is more like the pay-what-you-want music on bandcamp. The album may be free, or have a $5 minimum or something, but you can always pay more. Most people seem to just say "Well if it's free, why would I pay money for it?" In my case, I've given $45 to starbound; that's the same amount as a 4 pack of pixel tiers. And while I do really like the forum badge that came with it, I did it because 1. I enjoyed Terraria so goddamn much I'd like to pay them a little extra for something that may have dozens upon dozens of hours of content, and 2. I'd like to see such stretch goals met, and support the devs in any way possible so they can put every amazing idea into the game that pops into their head. I've said this in other threads about the stretch goals, but they aren't solely for the devs to try and drum up more money. I think of them as anything they thought about, but didn't have the resources to make. The Novakid, for example, isn't just going to be a race. I'd imagine it's going to have to be fully integrated into the game, lore and all; that's not an easy job.

All in all, Starbound could've reached $1 Million without a single stretch goal, if the devs so chose, so I'm gonna wear my golden donor badge with pride, and eagerly wait as the Novakid race becomes a reality.

You honestly think people buy higher tiers for the badge or the extras? No.. they buy them to support the game. They would of bought them even if no extras were given.

I might be wrong but from what I understood forums are here to have discussions, and as far as I know we are having a discussion right now. What's wrong with "announcing" it, as you like to call it? Why for that reason are you or anyone else "announcing" posts or topics here? It's a discussion forum, get over it.

I'm curious where you got that information from, or if your just throwing out random numbers/thoughts. Opinion =! Fact. Nvm. Didn't see the Roadmap.

The difference with that is, by the end of the day you paid and got something. With pre-ordering Starbound you get little apart from giving support to the DEVs.

Supporting Starbound and the developers is great, but why didn't you do it before a pre-order? Why do it now while there is a pre-order and your expecting a game or playable beta "soon" while claiming you don't care for all that and just say its for support. Admit it, most of the people who pre-ordered do not (or barely) do it for the support. Or else they would've had donated before this.

  19. Hey there, DrHankeey.

To answer the question about the percentage gathered of Starbound's development so far, that was calculated by taking the Roadmap into consideration and its corresponding values.

Some people had showed interest in donating before the pre-order. However, so was not allowed at that point. Nevertheless, Chucklefish could indeed benefit from donations, so this pre-order process came to be. That way, people are not only donating, but also get some recognition in return.
