Bug/Issue (Visual) Emoticons are not displayed

Pop-ups with emoticons are not displayed and a weird rectangle is displayed instead (like when there is a Unicode error or something).

So, instead of getting the heart when your cat/log loves you:

you have a weird rectangle (I haven't a screenshot).

Happens on Ubuntu 16.04, I haven't found an error log for this on ~/.local/share/StardewValley/ErrorLogs

 

Hmm... Do you happen to have a non-English language set as your system language? I wonder if it's related to that.

 

No, my system language is English, the only non-English setup is the keyboard layout.

So, I've been taking a look at this, and I was able to confirm the issue happens to me as well. I discovered after doing some tests that the special characters(like the heart) are getting remapped ingame on the Linux version. I modified 2 sections of the game for verification: Quests.xnb & the name of the pet.



You can see in the screenshots below on Windows:

< mapped to heart
* mapped to Angsty head symbol

However on Linux:

< mapped to Unicode like error block
* mapped to heart

Oh, you're right. I can reproduce this.

It's not clear at this point whether it is port related (a handful of other internal changes went into 1.08 that haven't made it into a Windows build yet), but we're looking into it!

 

I think I may have seen this on a bulletin board quest given Spring 8 or 9 also. I'm confused because I think the bulletin board said George wants a catfish and it's a 2 day quest. But the wiki has him in a group of villagers who typically hate catfish? I just started playing.
