Vehicle observation from new update

    I thought I had a hope of spriting some vehicles and putting them in game, but the 2.5D is hard enough for smaller sprites as is. Trying to make complex objects is well out of my league, the mech does look nice though.

    Maybe it only has the 3D effect when its standing still, and its flat 2D when its walking. I think it would look weird if it would walk while point not in the direction that its walking.

    this pretty accurate actually. in another game similar to starbound (that i wont name here), there was a 2.5D mech walking shown and it looks awkward as all hell.

    It has to be. Either that, or the mech will have an incredibly odd-looking, duck-like straddle when it's moving.

    If you look at the characters, creatures, objects in starbound, you can see that it's slightly rotated towards the screen. Just like this mech! :)

    Looks great, but I wonder how the mech is going to look going up hills and climbing uneven terrain.

    Was thinking the same about vehicles in general.
    How is it going to work on blocky terrain without looking like poop? Would this mech be able to jump to get in higher place or something like that?

    Dispersion has a good point, what are the vehicles going to do for shifts in terrain. All of these improved aesthetics are for not if their movement looks jarring (not to say that the old one would do any better).

    I'd wondered about how this would be handled as well (regarding the sprite overhanging the terrain). We've seen a similar situation with four legged monsters where part of their body is mid air while a small portion is actually resting on the ground. Unfortunately due to the sprites used in the game, creating a mechanic to allow wider monster sprites (and vehicles as well) to be able to dynamically adjust their body position on uneven terrain could be a daunting task. The only way I could see it being done would to be to make the separate sections of the monsters/vehicles be pinned at certain points but be able to rotate independently (like our character's arms) so that the body could rotate to allow legs to rest on a solid surface. This would greatly affect how animations would need to be implemented as well as many other key factors. I would guess we're going to have to put up with partially hovering monsters/vehicles.

    its not that bad, almost every other game like this has that. Itd be really cool if it didnt but its not a big deal im sure we can do without it.

    Or maybe they can check to see if there is ground on the bottom left or right of the mech and how far. Then the game can change the mech sprite(maybe effect it visually only?). If the distance is too far then maybe the mech will slide when it is not moving? That's just my take on how to deal with it.

    Juxtor's idea would have issues with shadows and lighting effects on the sprites (the lighting effect is always on the top right).
