Idea: Fast, easy and long distance transportation of people and items. Let's say you are settled on this planet that you really liked. Eventually you will want to travel back and forth to that deep underground or far away for that mining zone. One block wide of Vacuum Tube Transport can be crafted using 2 blocks of glass. As we already know, you will be able to place blocks of 1x1 or 2x2 blocks wide. If you place a straight tube 1 block wide, it can be used to transport items. Example: you are mining far away from your base and your inventory is full, you could go to the Vacuum Tube near you and place the items in it. They will be sucked to the other ending that is in your base and dropped on the floor so you can pick them up when you are back. Now if you place a Tube 2 blocks wide, it can be used for character transportation. Keep in mind that these tubes can be placed horizontally or vertically on the planet and will require a lot of patience and work from the player, just like the Hellevators in Terraria. Down below there is an example of Tube. I made the effort of creating both Tubes in actual game scale(exactly 1 and 2 blocks wide) for you to see what it would look like. The one on the left is the Item Tube, while the other is the Character Tube. What do you think? Constructive feedback is appreciated. [/spoiler]
It was suggested Tubes in another topic Created Today. It's a nice suggestion but it needs its limits for not Force with the Render / Server Engine, since everything is loaded at Chunks some super fast way to transportation will likely heavy in server-performance side. Just look at Terraria, how many servers did block a lot of items for try to avoid performance-breaking things. ^^
It doesn't need to be super fast. Even if the speed is close to that of a vehicle, it skips obstacles that might delay you. Maybe a little faster than the fastest vehicle available to compensate the trouble of placing blocks. Thanks for the reply though.
Yours looks better than mine anyway, so feel free to keep going as you were, don't mind me, besides, now there are two people to scratch their heads at bacons thoughts on how games work (kidding) Actually this just means they have a higher chance of seeing it.
Mn' Bacon I have a feeling I'm going to run into you everywhere now that I'm active again. Would you mind linking, if possible, the location of mentioned loading method?
In the middle of the Tons of INFO, find where it was said the world loads in chunks it's... POSSIBLE because I'm an AWESOME Bacon and posted an Compilation: http://community.playstarbound.com/index.php?threads/14-4-ama-new-game-info-updated.17555/ Of Hot new Game Info. (render info is confirmed there) ^^
Just because you load in chunks, does not mean you cannot move fast, the chunks might be large enough that the next one loads before you even approach the edge, they chose chunks to speed up the game, not to limit it.
This could POSSIBLY be possible, since water flow affects player, making controlled "Pipes" from blocks could make transportation,if the pressure would be sufficient...
Option of having the item version going straight to a storage container would be good, so for example you are gathering resources place them in the tube and they will be deposited into the chest (for less lag issues and such could have it so just places them in with no animation needed). Also could have it send items back to you from a supply chest, basically a way to access storage from long distance since if you can send things by tube, likely you could have a computer system that tells it to send something from the other end. That way you could progress slower by constantly expanding your tube network but have easier access to supplies and storage. Maybe you need a special adaptor pipe on the end to access the send/receive function that has a higher resource cost otherwise it just sends it. Maybe have the placing items directly into a chest makes it so you need a special pipe to chest converter pipe at the end. Still seems like it could be useful and go well.
The only problem I see is people getting lost because I would place these everywhere, and when I say everywhere I mean as everywhere as the sandgun in terraria places sand!
