Uranium instead of coal.

Well hello there im pretty new to this forum, but i still wanted to share an idea here. Im not pretty sure if this is the right place for such thread, but i think i just go on.

So as you all now the fuel for your spaceships is coal, which is kinda weird right? I mean spaceships should be fueled by something awesome and futuristic. Maybe stuff like Plutonium or Uranium. Coal always seemed to me like it doesnt belongs in spaceships, it more belongs in to locomotives. So my idea would be to bring Uranium in the game. You can gather it like any other Resource, maybe with an special device. Also you could get damage if you are surrounded by to much Uranium, which you can protect yourself from with special clothing. Weapons with Uranium, or maybe things like an Uranium-Lantern (Dat fancy green light doh). There are many things you can bring in with Uranium, and i think it would make fantastic in this game (imagine radioactive swords, that be so cool).
I hope you guys like this idea, and i hope it wasnt already featured in "The future of Starbound"

We already have Uranium/Plutonium. They just don't have any good uses yet. (Bad fuel sources compared to coal due to abundance)

Uranium actually is in the game already, but only at higher tiers. As is plutonium.

Coal is most likely just a placeholder for now until they figure out a better fuel source for early game stages.

We have uranium and plutonium already, and they are better fuels than coal.

Further proof that ore generation needs to be fixed.

    Either that or hacks/mods.

Completely unnecessary and proof of how immature you are.

In the Delta sector, I have a really freaking hard time finding any uranium, even near the cores of planets. I think it only appears in specific sub-biomes.

Coal is abundant because it's used to create Steel, Ferozium, Violium and Impervium.
If we're speaking about Fuel Sources I think the "Molten Core" should provide 200 Fuel since it's a limited use item, and well, it would have power in it.

    • Coal is 2, 500 to Refuel
    • Uranium is 4, 250 to Refuel
    • Plutonium is 6, 167 to Refuel
    • Solarium is 8, 125 to Refuel
I think the spawn rates for the fuel ores not only need to be tweaked, but the fuel they provide should be changed also, or atleast require a special machine to purify the Ores to turn them into a Fuel, much like how they get turned into Rods, I believe the Rods should function as a Fuel source, not the Ores themselves, as they could be useful for building.
    • Uranium could be used to poison anything which walks onto it (As it is radioactive ;))
    • Plutonium just looks pretty, since it's hot pink.
    • Solarium could be used as an alternative to Coal for Torches or even used when crafting Lights

It's only really common by threat level 5

in any case, the ores do need a spawn rate adjustment, but i feel that by the halfway point fuel should not be a primary issue, since by then you are probably rather well equipped. metallic ores are really common later on, and do need a nerf, but fuel should probably not be nerfed nearly as much as metals

What the hell was that for? This comment was not necessary, really.

  16. For those not in the know, all ores will be heavily rebalanced later down the road, they are in large abundance now because the devs tweaked the ore balance to make it easier for people to get through the sectors to end game, and in the process hunt for bugs so the devs can squash them. If ores were set to normal levels we would have thousands of people in beta sector and only hundreds in delta/x sector which leads to shitty bug tracking. This way everyone can get to the later sectors for bug tracking purposes.

Terrible post is terrible. Try to not sound like a complete asshat next time you decide to contribute to a threads topic.

Coal itself doesnt bother me. Early on you need a bit more of it, and the spawn is a bit lower. But i never felt like it was impossible to move on. Investing coal into some torches to mine deeper into the planet revealed fairly rich deposits. But yes, early game Coal is going to limit you somewhat.
This i am okay with, something is going to limit or keep you from running around freely. And i think people will complain about whatever it is. Now its coal, and if that gets buffed itll be something else and that gets flak. Some people simply want to immediatly get up and get moving, and i can totally understand that, get exploring and trekking. But thats not what the core game is trying to offer.

I would like it if alternate fuels (plutonium, uranium, solarium) would show up on any planet. But in far more limited amounts and deep in the planet. So early game isnt exclusively about traveling on coal, but there are some alternatives. If for nothing more then to just make it a little more interesting and introduce the idea that there are multiple sources of fuel early on.

However i wouldnt buff coal, or wood-to-coal. I quite like the start where you feel stranded and need to put in a bit of effort to get prepared, and start your journey into the vast universe. To me it feels more immersive to know i am going to be stuck on the planet i start, or atleast the solar system. Where i cannot quickly fly off, even if the planet/system is bad. That is immersive for me, that you cannot always get super fortunate.
Sometimes you get unlucky and you have to struggle a bit, makes overcomming the hand you were dealt all the sweeter. But thats just how i feel.

Also i dont think metalworking will stay the way it is. Where every other tier is just previous tier + coal. Its kinda boring and i suspect the alloys will be more complex, and a bit more interesting.

@Battle Attitude: Don't be embarrassed! Those other sources of fuel are far harder to find than coal is, and you said it yourself that you haven't been playing for long!

I'd also like to let you know that you can actually find Plutonium on your first world if you look hard enough, you see, unlike the other fuels that spawn in other sectors, Plutonium is found on asteroids that spawn on every planet; you just have to go up, waaaaay up, into orbit in fact. Its really cold up there too, so you'll need your snow set made from leather and at least two camp fires (I suggest 4 to move about easier). But once you get up there you'll be able to find the asteroids and if your lucky, a bit of plutonium.

Just give us a Mr. Fusion engine for our ships instead. This way I have a use for all those garbage weapons and shields I keep finding other than trashing them.
