Meh. The previous upgrades are just a part of upgrading the tool to max. Focus on getting those incremental upgrades naturally and the high tier stuff will be done before you know it.
The game is about taking your time, and skipping an upgrade is definitely not taking your time. The upgrades are fine the way it is, but that's just my opinion.
