Upgrading Ships

Upgrading your ship is great. You get more space and less use for planets. But...
    ShipSailed.jpg
How the hell am I supposed to fly this ship? My character is literally halfway across the room from the controls. Where am I entering these coordinates, my chair? The captain's chair should move closer to the cockpit when upgraded.

Secondly, fuel. It's nice to have all of this extra space, but how about and expanded fuel tank as well? Of course, the bigger ship would take more fuel, but let's say the large ship would use 50% more fuel then the base ship but have 80% more fuel space.
Similarly, it would be nice to get more storage space with ship upgrades. As of right now, there's no real reason to upgrade your ship other than space (and the fossil/skyrail/employer/cc stations). Without a real reason to upgrade their ships, some people might not bother with the quests to do so. If already available services (like techs) were improved with upgrades (which does happen, and was a good choice), bigger ships become more necessities and less of bragging rights.

Have any feedback on ships? Feel free to post it here.

We are talking about faster than light travel here, pure sci-fi, it doesn't necessarily need more fuel for a bigger ship.

I suppose not. But a larger fuel tank would still be appreciated.
EDIT: I should probably point out that by that logic, jumps to other systems would always take the same amount of fuel regardless of the distance.

Isn't that where the rest of the crew comes in handy? Oh I forgot, we don't have other crew members. ><

But that would be an interesting idea I think to add with ship upgrades, or something in general to add. Anyway as to the fuel part it wouldn't bother me either way, but does make sense with ship upgrades.

There should be a set of arms in that headgear you're wearing. It will reach the console easily for sure.

I think it would be a idea, to have some kind of crew system involved with the ships. Like your the caption of your ship and you tell your crew when to take off an stuff you can ask them to venture down to a planet or something. Think when you start off your the only member of your crew then later down the road as you defeat bosses, npcs start to notice you and request to join your crew (Kinda like a rep system). Or you could just hire them.

But I would love to see some basic ship parts at low price in the 3D printer after some upgrades (doors, lights, lockers...)

My question is.. how are you NOT steering that ship with that ridiculous high tech head gear?

I think the human ship uses that much space because holy crap, that headgear is bound to get even more absurd as you progress through the tiers.

That's actually not a tiered helmet. Chucklefish did a good job of making human tiered helmets less ridiculous. No--what my character is wearing is the Caustic Stag Helmet, which I found in an underground slime biome somewhere. It was apparently a create-a-hat contest winner. I think it looks pretty nice, but unfortunately, part of my hair sticks out. The only absurd armor headgear is for hylotl, avians, and glitch now.
    It's broken.
    Someone, make that mod. Now.
You can print them in admin mode, then scan them into your printer normally (lockers, teleporters, and chairs only cost 1 pixel to print!). I personally see no reason why we shouldn't be able to destroy the ones on our ship, however. I suppose it's to avoid griefing, but that shouldn't be a problem if the player starts with the ability to print the chair and teleporter for free (or 1 pixel). The locker might be a problem, but provided players are smart on multiplayer, it should be fine. Just a thought.
The idea's pretty good, though it could use some refining. Technically speaking, a crew can already be made; although in both cases, there isn't much of a use for them. S.A.I.L. seems capable of running the ship alone. It would be cool to have a crew, because let's be honest, these ships are a bit big for one person.
Shouldn't the wheel go towards the aft of the ship?

It's also supposed to go on top and outside of the ship, but the captain kept floating off into space and dying, so we revised the design a bit.

Good thing you caught that mistake. It's a shame the same could not be said of the captain.

I agree with OP (and 90% of you in this thread)

The chair should move with ship upgrades OR at least give us the option to pickup a captains chair if another one is already placed.

Your right it would take the same amount of fuel as there is no resistance in space it's just time that is longer you can not go faster than a certain speed before molecular structure fails and you tear apart.
If you are going with this warp speed/faster than light travel idea then you can only go as fast as what every hold the ship together can tolerate still using only the same fuel to reach max speed then tapping out.

About the crew, can't you just place spawners? I used to have a doctor in my spaceship, until I accidentally fired him... with a rifle.

If the FTL drive works by compressing space in front of it then flying through the compressed space below-lightspeed, then distance could be a factor in fuel cost regardless of the size of your ship.

Although the chair does need to be brought forward.
