Updates are too large to be this frequent.

?

Do you agree that updates should be made smaller if they are this frequent?

Seriously? All you did was join the discussion to troll me? GTFO. I have done nothing wrong but express my concerns about large downloads every 2 days because of a bandwidth cap. I have not been inflammatory at all. Stop coming to people's topics just to troll them.

So GameQB11, you suggest that every single person who has a bandwidth cap in canada, australian, and EA who is unlucky enough to live with a limit on their internet, should no longer play the game or just not buy it? Bandwidth limits exist more than you know, especially in the country areas where providers don't want to stick a DSL kiosk because of the fact that there are less than 600 people living in range of it. I was told by Century Link, in order for them to put a DSL kiosk out here, they want 600 people in the area to immediately switch over to their internet, and there aren't even half that amount of people here.

That is very irrelevant. And a very very terrible analogy. If you had already sent 2970 of those pictures in the past, you could pack the other 90 in a tiny box, pay less than 5% of the shipping cost, and he'd still have all 3000 pictures. In an update, I proposed that we unpack the gamer's pak file, the patcher add in the new changed files, the patch then re-pack the pak file, then the update is complete while not having to have downloaded 400 megs but instead, only 10 megs which was a lot faster and less on the bandwidth. Bonuses, nothing bad comes of this plan, the only thing that happens is your hard drive gets a little extra work, rather than your internet. In most cases, this method is very much faster. I can unpack and repack the asset file faster than I can download a new one.

Which could be solved by voluntary download of the debug symbols. The game has 100k players, and less than 10% of them are actually using the debug symbols to help. Why should the ones who aren't be forced to download them? Though I would rather support the game by using the symbols, I can't because of the constant updating of them so I actually would have to opt out. Not that that makes me bad for not wanting to help support bug fixes for the game, it's just to much data now that updates are happening much more often.

What about having the debug symbols in a seperate download so people can opt out?

    -------------------------------------------
People, I never said frequent updates are super bad, I just said that frequent large updates are bad. It's pretty bad when a game updates 5 times in a week and each one is 500MB while barely doing any slight tweaks to the game. Just to fix like a chest glitch or something, I can't find the mini-hot fix patch notes so I'm not sure what was fixed. If debug symbols are the cause of this, they should be made a separate download if it is possible. There are to many pages in this topic now, mainly because people feel like jumping in and trolling me for having bad net and trying to make this whole thing out to be my fault. Believe me, If I was the only person in the world who had bad internet, I wouldn't be here complaining about it. I know there are others out there in my situation. Don't sit there and troll me because of my situation because I will report your posts from now on. I'm sick of you trolling me for my situation. NO MORE.

It was a metaphor, and I'm on your side here with that. From the beginning of Beta to some point during Furious (might have been the start), everything was fine. All the files were in the many, many folders you see in the screenshots I put. The 'pictures' in the 'album'. Now every time we get a few more pictures, they send the whole new album and the old album disappears, and we can't swap out the pictures that are damaged without going through a long, arduous process of getting the sleeve off them.

I had just woken up to see the topic so I was having a hard time distinguishing who was attacking. Hard to tell with pretty much everyone attacking me now. But that still wasn't a very good metaphor. You don't update an individual file one file at a time in an update, you update a batch of files each update. Your metaphor suggested we send one at a time at a very slow means. You can't use RL metaphors in a digital world really because each thing you compare will always sound slow. Electrical data is near instant. Instant enough that people think it's instant but there is at least a 50 millisecond delay. It's instant enough that it can't be done RL. My head hurts though. Such a terrible topic to wake up to. I'll come back several hours later so I can read the several more pages of insults towards me and my bad internet and then reply to the actual intelligent people who actually put forth a real argument. :p

I don't see how anyone can argue against OP here.

Also I'm pretty sure most Canadians have no caps (at least everyone in Canada I know or have met, I'm Canadian btw) to whoever said we do.

Oh no, things got more efficient and beneficial for people with no cost to amount of content! How terrible!

can we just agree Vas needs to turn off auto updates if he doent want to download a file everytime it updates
and even if they didnt do it all the time, then you would have to download and even bigger file witch would go over this "cap"

  11. cyberspyXD

    cyberspyXD Tiy's Beard

But then what about the new content that gets added. Oh wait...

It's not fair to those with caps. Just because you have no issue does not mean it's not a issue. EVERYONE should be able to enjoy the new additions.

i dont get it, if you want the content then turn on auto updates, if you dont want the content then turn it off

to get the content your going to have to download it (unless you pirate it and you would still have to download it then too)

" if you keep crying someone will change your diaper eventually"
btw this is a horeable rule to fallow don't do it lol

Do you not understand? Most of the data in the updates were fluff.

Starbound has downloaded way more GBs then it should have.

I don't know what I ever did to you at all to make you come to my topic and start being an ... but you really should learn to be civilized rather than going to someone's topic with the sole purpose of trolling it.

I know right? It's just awful that the devs get more efficient at something and it has virtual no negative effects whatsoever on the entire community at all while providing positive effects for absolutely everyone. I mean sheesh, who ever said we needed to be more efficient in the first place?

It's funny though, what you replied to him with. I bet he'll complain about something like how the devs spent extra time becoming more efficient rather than adding new content.

    gigs? thats odd
mines olny around 2gs and thats with mods, an unpacked assets folder, the OST and over 1000 abc songs
and most of the updates are olny around 300ish mbs and tons of games have updates like that
if you think this is bad you should play tf2 lol

then again i live in amarica so i cant rilly say much about crappy internet =p

Actually, even if it may be bad for people with low badnwith, this is how it should be in an unfinished beta. Updates need to come as soon as they are done to be tested properly.

    exactly my point,
well not rilly what i sead but basicly want i was thinking

idk with this topic title it sounds like you want to slow down the update fregentcy and thats olny going to hurt chuckelfish and the community in a longshot,
if that wasnt your intent you could atlest word the title abit better
oh and the updates would be bigger makeing it worse for you technicly

Well. I live in America too. Land of the "free" and home of the greatest most kind honorable people in exis... BAH HAHA, can't even type that with a straight face. Land of the scam the crap out of you with services because no one will do anything about it anyway.

You must live in a big city or at least a city with a population of more than farmers and animals. I live way out here in a small little village / city, with a tiny amount of people in the area. You either get 10GB per month Satelite for $50 a month as I last checked with a lot of catches and addendums or you get high speed 16GB per month long range wifi for $40 a month, with catches and addendums, or maybe you want cellphone internet which is "unlimited" for the first 5 gigs, then you get dropped to dialup speed or less for the remaining amount of "infinite" oh and that's for about $50 a month or more. America right? Such a wonderful country. Where you get screwed if there is no competion for a business in your area. If nothing but walmart existed throughout america, they'd have one store per 100 miles and everything would cost an arm and a leg. But there are laws against that, those laws don't apply to internet though so internet users are royally screwed unless they live in a nicely populated area.

Now that you know a little more about the country you live in, maybe you want to stop pretending that America is so great that everyone has a great well built home with perfect unlimited high speed fiber internet and unlimited food supplies with all the happy rich people stuff filling their homes, and remember that America is only slightly better than some countries, and still has a high amount of scamming and crime all over it with poor people suffering everywhere. Just because YOU have high speed unlimited, doesn't mean everyone in your country does.
