Closed Upbeat Giraffe, traveling deep underground causes massive world lag (also, lag over time increases)

EDIT: A full uninstall/reinstall solves this, as TAFNA-DM suggests in the post right after this one.

    =----=

I was digging deep underground to collect core fragments in order to fix up my ship, and roughly 1 screen up from them (1920x1080, 2x zoom, I could use control key to shift my camera down to see them), the world stops responding.

My character can move around fine, and can attack/dig/place/whatever, but nothing in the world responds - blocks are removed from my inventory, but not placed. Mobs don't move or otherwise respond to me. Blocks I mine don't get mined out.

If I wait long enough - anywhere from 1 to 5 minutes - everything I've tried to do will happen all at once - but it'll progress only by what seems like a fraction of a second. Blocks will mine out or place, mobs will be hurt, etc., but vines will fall only by a block or two, and mobs will freeze up while doing the "flashing' death animation. 1 to 5 minutes later, the world progresses another few seconds.

I also discovered that, at this point, I cannot travel back to the surface, as any chunks distant from me have been unloaded, and don't reload as I travel. This also resulted in me being trapped in a very small space, since as I traveled upward some, the lower chunks unloaded and wouldn't reload. Further, any torches that had gone offscreen cease to exist, and I don't know if they'll come back on a reload.

Regarding the second thing I noted in the title, it's just a general observation that, over time, Starbound's framerate drops, and instances of lag spikes - especially in mob behavior - become more common. This occurs over the course of several hours.

System specs: Windows 7 Ultimate x64, AMD Phenom II x4 Black Edition CPU (3.4GHz quad-core), 16GB memory, AMD Radeon R9 270 GPU

I am having pretty much this exact same issue. Deep underground, in caves, when I dig, or the pre-dug mine. It seems above ground it performs fine. I can run to the pre-dug mine on my starter planet, killing monsters, chopping trees and digging coal along the way. There is an area with a tent and some boxes above ground which I can consistently use. As soon as I drop down a few flights of stairs into the mine there is another tent and some more boxes which now i cannot use. There are also monsters which appear to be stuck running in place. I can run around, switch items etc but the world is not responding. After some time all the actions seem to happen at once and any torches I tried to place are now there but this whole thing will just repeat. After reading this post I tried running above ground quickly which I hadn't before and got similar results. I started having this problem with the new update. Within the last hour, (~9pm EST) Starbound updated through Steam and I'm still having the issue. I've only used the left most button in the launcher, haven't tried any OpenGL option. Hope this info might help some.

    System specs: Windows 7 Pro SP1 64 bit, Intel Core i5 750 @ 2.67GHz, 12GB memory, Galaxy GeForce GTX 650Ti

    UPDATE:

After posting this I tried a complete reinstall. I deleted local content using Steam and then also manually deleted the Starbound folder. I then did a fresh download through Steam. This seems to have completely resolved the issue for me. I found a similar pre-dug mine with pretty much the same layout and tried all the actions mentioned above and had no problems at all. I wanted to make sure the issue was actually resolved before i spoke too soon but I have now dug far deeper than before and was able to collect core fragments and can progress.

Similar problems with my system. Especially underground the best framerate I get is around 7 fps. On the surface it's not much better - depending on how many NPCs are around me, framerate is as bad as underground. If I am all alone I might get 20 fps if I'm really lucky.

Loading the game at all takes ages (4-5 min).

    Specs: Win 7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit, Intel Core i3 M370 (2x2.4 GHz), 8 GB RAM
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GT 420M

I am definitely getting increasing levels of lags while playing on certain planets. It sounds like a memory leak caused by a certain element(s) of planet generation, since it doesn't happen on every planet.

Perhaps a certain dungeon which generates, or a certain object, etc.

To those responding to this, I should probably note that if you're getting a fast overall framerate drop, and/or drops near mobs/NPCs, it's not the same issue. Even as the world stopped responding, my character was able to move around normally with no framerate issues.

The specific bug I'm reporting here seems to be linked to a flaw in the Steam update which causes Starbound to stop loading planet chunks after some time, and a full uninstall/reinstall is needed to fix the game.

There's been a hotfix for some server crashes and issue of not cleaning generated temporary files. So we should recheck if this is still happening.

I've just encountered a similar issue on a specific planet - Beta Epsilo 445 I a, @ (-94181318, 115633082). (Are all universes identical, or is it randomized when the game is started?)
I've also had issues recently with latency slowly building until I'm forced to restart the server.
If I reinstall the program and force-delete the Starbound folder, can i backup the Universe file as to not lose the build work I've done on my home planet? Or is the whole thing a wash?

This is also happening to me, but only on another's dedicated server. Hosting my own server as well as playing singly, this issue does not exist. Severe lag crops up and persists for a random amount of time, between 1-10 minutes, usually as any player descends deeper underground.

As the OP, players can move about and "place" and "mine" items, but no data is communicated between the server and clients, spontaneously catching up all at once.

Issue resolution: Complete removal and discarding of giraffe-storage folder, implying a total world/universe reset. Something was apparently corrupted and being very unkind in order to cause these issues.

I tried deleting universe\universe.chunk and universe\universe.dat, which seemed to force a re-generation of the world *without* deleting my character nor the ship. Worst case, you can always delete the whole universe directory content and keep the player content.
