Uninspired bosses / endgame nonexistant

Before everyone jumps all over me - I know this game is in pre-beta and so so so so so much more is yet to be added (including bosses and endgame content!)

This is more of a concern I wanted to raise as I really like this game, and I played terraria to death; I was hoping starbound would be much harder to 'play to death' so to speak.

    Uninspired bosses:
So far the boss design so far seems to be pretty consistent with terraria, giant GIF's that shoot projectiles and crash into you. They're fun the first few times, but it's really just a glorified gear-check and once you've got the items off them you need there's really no incentive to go back and fight them ever again.
Can we expect any kind of innovation here in regards to boss fights? I really hope so, but so far I've been unimpressed. I was hoping for something along the lines of gunstar heroes-esque boss fights.

    No endgame:
Doubtlessly it will take much much much longer time than in terraria to accrue all the items you might want to collect in this game, but once you have maxed your armour/weapons, got all the aesthetic stuff, built yourself a giant base etc - is there anything left to do? Exploring sure fine, but once you've got your fill of that, then... game over?

For the casual gamer these problems will probably never arise, but for me they do :<

    Interested to hear peoples thoughts.

game is 15$. I'm already over 60hours of gametime, and not even close to the so called "end game".

a AAA game which costs 60$ has a game time of... 7-8 hours, max?

Hope you see my point. Also, sandbox game. Do what you want. Make your own goals. I want to destroy planets by mining every bit of block on it, leaving only the LAVA.

some ppl just need their hands held by developers. these players need to be told by the Devs what they should do. So they can feel doing "end-game", then repeatedly complain about the lack of content in the "end game".

    Exactly my thoughts.

But for the OP. Not all of the content is in game. This is the first phase of the beta, which means: they want to fix balance issues and clear out major bugs and make sure it runs before anything.

Why is the game's value reduced to a perceived endgame?
If it has one that's fine, but isn't it fine if it doesn't? Can the journey not be the experience and fun as well?

As for the bosses, I imagine they are placeholders for now.

Will first like to say I sorta like the way you type as you dont sound like a typical ranter just saying "this sheite sux" so kudos for that. :p

The only thing I can say regarding innovation is that right now, and you probably also know, that the patch thats about to come out will give an overhaul of the combat system and therefore maybe turning the bosses into less of a gearcheck than they currently are.

As for endgame I dont know. You also mention yourself that theres alot that still needs to be added to the game and therefore more may appear. Things may also seem bland right now because the devs also have to go through a learning process finding out what they can give us to challenge us and satisfy us at the same time.

I take it you arent the creative type which is why the endgame probably came upon you fairly fast. Have you tried exploring around and seeing if you can find alot of different weapons and things to play around with? I guess you need some sort of challenge to use these things on else you find it useless to look for them? :) Just trying to put myself into your mindset.

Wasnt terraria also game over once you had finally accumulated everything? Isnt every game pretty much like that until new content shows up tho? :)

And since its in beta, its encouraged to speak up about the game so that the devs won't leave things as they are? I'm sure that they have more planned to be added to the game but still.. Speak up now, I want this game to actually be good, so please if you see something you don't like then say it.

With all there first posts being something with minimal thought to what they've said. (This doesn't apply to all, obviously).
I'm willing to accept new faces around, but I will never deny that I've seen these increasing amount of posts coming a mile away.

As long as we keep giving criticism, the final product should hopefully be great.

I love the fact that most people dont seem to be following the OP's post.

He is raising a valid concern as for IF the endgame will just be like terraria.
And he is right, IF its just some items, and a bunch of bases being build what after?

As for the bosses, i cant say too much yet :)
Once the AI gets improved i fear the bosses might start to use their abilities way more efficient and actually aim to kill people, instead just doing so randomly.

So you point is that because I get X amount of hours out of the game, I have no right to hope that I might get more? That sounds like phooey to me.

To everyone screaming BETA, please read the first line of my post!

If there is no so-called 'engame' that's fine, I can deal, but I'm just putting this out there in the hopes that there might be one. My point is that there should always be a proverbial 'carrot-on-a-stick', even if that carrot is something as simple as nigh-impossible 'achievements' or a meaningless leveling system (e.g. paragon levels in D3), or similar. Welcome to disagree as I'm sure you will :)

I always say never use beta as a shield but this time.... Its not a shield. ITS LEGITIMATE.

    BETA

Some of the bosses are placeholders and the game is in need of balancing.

ya, pretty much. If youre not interested in loot and exploring, then its time to move on. Thats not necessarily a flaw. All games must end, unless you feel like playing it over. I know i dont intend to play this game forever.

Still i feel ur missing the point of the post, its not to discuss wether or not it is a beta.
Its to discuss the concern of endgame and such WHEN its finished. Now now, not tomorrow.
When its officially finished. Released, non beta, full product.

Your first statement sums up most of your complaints/discussion points honestly mate. But I'll happily respond, since you thought out and wrote a decent post, instead of just a giant QQ.

I'm personally hoping that as the game nears completion they add in Legendary drops from the bosses. (Sort of like mini-bosses have now, just better, and things that only drop from the bosses.) This would give Incentive to fight bosses more then once, I'd also really like to see them have Bosses drop special building materials, or something like that, I think it'd be a cool feature, dunno many might dis-agree. As for the bosses being .gifs I think the later tier bosses will be more and more awesome to be honest, I think the early tier ones are meant to be simple, easy to predict and kill. I thought the Dragon was pretty badass myself, maybe that's the Maplestory player in me coming out though. :)

I don't think anyone but a gamedev can give you a real answer to this I'm afraid. They have stated that after Tier 10, there is Tier X and that Threat Level 100 planets (Or whatever they are being changed to in the new patch.) Will be a challenge even for players in max gear, so we'll see how much "end-game" content is in, I have faith in Chucklefish to do right by the game, I just hope they keep the difficulty up there so it's not boring and easy to get to the end.

The big bosses have some issues with them currently both mechanically and balance (being fixed). However, I feel that in the future the content will be much easier to expand out then say in Terraria. Not including the excellent potential from mods alone but from the sheer potential. So I would look at it with that context in mind. This also applies to the minibosses that are currently in the game and no doubt they will continue to expand out.

Well the direction of the game is more of a sandbox then a literal objective based game. That is to say it is more like Minecraft then say Terraria from an end game design (imo). I would suggest that the modding community will expand upon this even further then the dev's will have any intention to do so. The dev's will expand and finish this out but I imagine we won't be seeing an official release version of Starbound for at least 6 months.

So my general thoughts are that the 'end-game' content and content in general will actually more likely come from the player base than the developers. Which is more in line with sandbox titles in general like Minecraft.
