I've been here since the beginning and I've been pretty critical of Chucklefish many times in the past.
Particularly about how many things were implied to be ready soon back in 2012 and yet now two years later they are still nowhere to be seen.

I don't think that I've received a single warning so far. (although I was kinda close, once)
Not long ago I actually got a neat little frowny forum badge for providing constructive criticism. :p

Many people who claim to be all innocent were actually very passive-aggressive.
They asked questions the way press grills political parties.

They asked questions like "Do you think it's okay for your staff to be a bunch of oppressors?"
Anyone can see that it's a thinly veiled insult in a question.
When people then get banned or warned for such "questions" they then act all "*shock!* But I am an innocent little angel! How dare they!" and go complain about it on other forums, telling about them how they were treated unfairly and how their questions weren't answered.

Chucklefish have certainly made some pretty obvious mistakes, so I'm not terribly surprised that many are upset.
Yet at the same time when you put it into context we are talking about a very cheap indie videogame here.

For some their discontent goes way overboard, and they do stuff like send death threats or form little groups to complain together.
This is turn means many feel bad for Chucklefish, and for some that defensiveness goes equally overboard.
Pretty much every game, and even many programs have fanboys.
(Even Firefox and Chrome have angry fanboys who fight one another, it's pretty funny. :D)

    TL;DR:
Many are upset because Starbound feels 2 years behind the schedule, for some the hate goes overboard, for some there's complete fanboy-denial that they could ever do wrong.
Criticism is accepted so long as you are very polite about it.
Don't act like a press member grilling a politician.

Hey HEY! I'm no bootlickin' jerk!

More seriously though, I'll be critical of Chucklefish from time to time, but they're not a bad company by any means. There's a ton of nice, talented, polite people hanging around these forums. You'll find your fair share of vocal people as well.

All in all, I'm happy with this place. They haven't kicked me out yet and there's drinks (Not really. They don't have free food either. Still worth it though)

im a community Lurker, i eat chips and drink coffee, i post when i feel like i should weigh in.

but when i do post it's usually in a polite manner (i think anyways :S) i dont think since ive been on this forum i've lost my space marbles at anyone. people have different opinions and if they tend to try and light a flame under my chair i wont respond and tiptoe through the tulips to do something else rather than incite a riot.

*Eggggh all this niceness is tiring*

seriousness though this community is most of the time quite friendly place to hang out and talk crap. ive often posted a video of my SB shenanigans and log in the next day to see my post veer off somewhere else then locate it and then think "Ahh thats why the dev's moved it, silly me put it in the wrong area whoops* the devs do good work.. then again im not here 100% to see when things hit the fan so i cant really weigh in on that.

Tl,Dr we are good people, we shun bad people. dev's make cake :D

Well for one as many other people have stated, Welcome to the Forums!

As to your concerns about the Community, from my experience it's overall good but it does have the problems that arise with any community
That being when you get White Knights or the people who just hate everything new that is done, but the numbers of those people are so small that they are pretty much irrelevant.

As per you buying the game...there are pros on and cons there. The game itself is pretty good I've gotten over 200 Hours out of it and that's without mods. For Cons, you'd have the uncertain release and the questionable updating but that should be getting resolved reasonably soon, but this is going to be more of a long-term investment since the game is not technically released so keep that in mind. You'll definately want to find a Multiplayer server to play on so that you can get more out of it and play with other people.

But all that aside, hope you enjoy the Forums and the game if you choose to get it.

But I did get the warning. I'd like to think that's because the mods, although forced to notice the infraction, also realized it was a punchline to figurative time bomb comedy about a somewhat literal time bomb. A joke, I might add, that was made all the better by accidentally being in the right place at the right time.

People post unpopular opinion. Many people disagree. Suddenly, community is full of bootlickers. Just like every other forum.

The community kind of left and has disappeared since February and March.

Will they come back when the next stable is released? Who knows.

Will the mod makers? Who knows.

I know quite a few people watch this game waiting for something to happen.

Answer: Yes. The Starbound community consists of mostly boot licking and manga inspired fan art. Six months of no patches and overly zealous moderation will do that to a community.

To get a better idea about how the vast majority of people feel about StarBound and Chucklefish, I would check out steam reviews and the steam forums. Especially the Steam reviews, as they don't have the problem of "over moderation" that most official Starbound channels can have.

Well the community is fun/cool/interesting, usually, but there is always an argument somewhere, so if you just avoid the arguments, you should be good.

    But its hard.

It's also pretty easy to see how much weight something someone says in this thread holds just by looking at their previous posts

I disagree so does that make me the boot licker or you?

Forget it, let me instead write a long unrelated post with different complaints to the subject being discussed.

    I agree.

I was going to write a long post to express my feelings about the community, but I'm not very skilled with english. So I'll wrote it in my mother tongue : french. Even if I know that nobody will read it, at least I'll give my opinion. (If you can't/don't want to read it, you don't have to, I'll put that part between spoilers).

I'll translate it later, if I can.

The community is what you make of it.

If you choose to participate in the heated argument threads, it will be a place of strife and moderation.
If you choose to participate in the Chat forum, it will be a lighthearted place without too much drama.
If you read every comment in every News post, it will be a dark, unhappy place.

Basically, find the parts of the community that you are interested in, and participate in those. You don't need to "experience" the entire community if there are parts you don't like. That's just silly.

If you're looking to find someone to talk to who will "respect your opinions and differences", you've already failed the instant you sign onto a public web forum. Any sufficiently large gathering of people will eventually if not instantly become overwhelmed with hostility and petty, Tumblr-esque politics. You have no idea how lucky we are that the forum staff themselves are good people; most web forums don't even have that luxury.

Now, you might be able to find specific people on your chosen forum who you can hold a friendly chat with in private, but the forum itself? That's not going to happen. You either give up reasoning with someone and "lose the argument" (but who really cares), or you lose your temper and make yourself the bad guy like me.

I was bored, so I decided to do your translating for you. Here you go:

"So, where to begin... first off, I think that, as in all communities, there are more extreme members who tend to be the most talkative, and I find that unfortunate, since they give the community a bad name. I've witnessed acts of bad faith on the part of detractors (including so much debate over the meaning of the word "lie" to cause me to repeatedly facepalm).

Personally, I like this community. People seem kind, relatively open, and helpful.

However, there's rising tension in certain areas over the release date, the attitude of the devs, the frequency of updates, and the expectations of players get brought up (with the outbursts of bad faith mentioned above). Simply put, this happens because some people don't know how to be patient/understanding.

I'll give you a simple example: the release date and the frequency of updates (which is the problem most frequently brought up by the game's detractors, the devs, and all kinds of grumpy people). Personally, I've never complained about these delays, for the simple reason that I play other games apart from Starbound, and therefore I can keep myself occupied until the eventual update.

To sum up, the community is like a coin: it has two opposing sides (both extreme in their own way), and a more moderate range where we can have discussions and good times."

    That about right?

My pleasure. By the way, I completely agree with your sentiments... particularly the bit about having other games to play while you wait. I often get the feeling that the most frustrated people on the forums are, ironically, some of the most obsessive Starbound players.

Not that there's anything wrong with loving the game (I certainly do), but play anything too much and you'll start to build up a pretty big list of things that annoy you about it.
