Twitter Update: Temperature Bar

I think having a bar would only be important if temperature had a LOT to do with the game. If certain plants only worked in X degrees, or some items could only be made in x degrees. If that played a part, temperature WOULD be important. Otherwise just a small icon indicating it would be okay. That or a special item that shows you the temperature.

I would think it'd slow down your movement/mining speed, and possibly kill you if you got too cold.

Also, think I might add a section to the OP quoting the really good suggestions. :DD

Like most people I notice I'm too hot when my hair catches fire and I'm too cold when fingers start falling off.

Let's just have the character slowly start taking damage after awhile and add the visual effects later. People tend to know when an area looks too hot or cold anyway, no one complained in Metroid when Samus walked into the lava areas and started taking damage over time.

I like a thermometer, maybe your classic mercury thermometer, or a digital temperature readout that changes colors depending on the reading.

I'm pretty stuck on Fahrenheit over Celsius ... so don't get all metric on us strange western imperial measuring folks ... at least give us the option for Fahrenheit!

A thermometer is just kinda generic in my opinion.

    Going on whats been said:

As is I think a thermometer display to the right of your health and energy on the character portrait.. that goes up and down like a mercury filled one would. That or give it a square in the top or bottom right corner of the screen along with the hunger meter and have it only show if you choose to engage the survival mode options.

Will the survival stats be optional? It's the first I've heard about something like that.

    Well, I agree actually.

In the sense of main screen interface space, it will take up the most real estate, too.

Why would this be? Heat is just as important as cold, and planets that are close to the sun would obviously be way to hot for a normal organism to withstand. Not to mention the closer you get to the planets core, the temperature would also increase. I would say instances of extreme heat are just as prevalent, if not more so than cold.

No opinion on the temperature bar. But if a Glitch dies from overheating, could they melt as their death animation?

    Mailboxhead Master Astronaut

Well yes, heat is very important, but I'd think in cases of intense heat you'd just start taking fire damage rather than have to deal with any sort of complex stat.

Probably wouldn't get added in though. Modders, make it happen!

    A ball?
    How does that work?

  19. DJOkamical

    DJOkamical Space Kumquat

Well, in the center of the ball, a number would tell you the temperature, and the color of the ball will tell you if it's cold or hot or neutral. :3

lol that's not a bad idea actually...

But I have another idea, why not combine different things instead of using a bar or a ball as a indicator for temperature. Like Mailboxhead mentioned having a silhouette around the character, blue meaning cold, red meaning hot, but this could also be advanced on for a little more detail. And then like greenskye mentioned, having frost appear on the edges of the screen when it gets very cold, imagine combining those.

And then we don't have to stop there, my idea would be to also include the smiley face indicator as well for the cold temperature and hot temperature. So it would show that the smiley face is sweating, turning more red when it's very hot, and then when it's colder it would turn more blue and look like it's shivering at some point, etc. :rainbow:

    Edit:

Whoops I almost forgot, like Ghostar is saying here:

If the temperature becomes very important in the game, like planting seeds, farming certain things requiring a different temperature etc, then of course the temperature would need a more detailed indicator. So if it turns out that way then we would need a temperature indicator that is detailed enough that you could see what the temperature currently is for farming those specific planets etc. That wouldn't have to be more complicated than adding a celsius display on the game, it wouldn't have to be more complicated than having celsius displayed in numbers above or below the smiley face indicator.

Like if the temperature is 21 celsius it could display like this °C 21 above or below the smiley face indicator, as an example. A bar wouldn't really be required for that, just saying. :p
