Twitter Update: Temperature Bar

Well gentlemen (and ladies), Tiy just tweeted this a few minutes ago:

I feel he's correct, a temperature "bar" doesn't seem really fitting. So lets have a community brain-storming session shall we? What do you think could make for a better temperature gauge? How temperature will affect normal gameplay could also be discussed.

My suggestion: having a silhouette of the character that fades from red to blue as the character gets colder, and disappears entirely when at full heat. That way your screen isn't quite as cluttered when somewhere like a tropical jungle planet where temperature isn't much of an issue.

    ::edit::
I should probably note that, to my knowledge, only cold temperatures are going to affect your character.

What if the player's icon changed to signify they're too hot & sweaty or too cold and shivering? have it be contextual

I saw his tweet before I saw your post ~_^

    No bars!
Maybe indicate the temprature with a number for example from 1-100 or real life Celsius and Fahrenheit. The color of the number indicates how comfortable the place is where you stand on in general , even (better maybe) with the suit of armor you got on, on that moment with a color that ranges from Cyan blue->blue->darkblue->green->yellow->orange->red
    (from cold to hot).
Where the blue number indicates that your character is freezing and the red number indicates that he/she is getting toasted

under current currency(pixels) you could simply show the time and temp of current planet

It's not the temperature of the planet, it's the temperature of the character. :p

  7. I like the Bar similar how it is with Temperature, but it could be in one corner of the UI, feels okay to me.

The game isn't out yet. It could definitely be adapted to be either.

    examples..

If your own temperature is too low then you're obviously under-dressed, conversely, if it's too high then you need to wear something to cool you off.

On the other hand if the planet temperature is too high then you know you need to wear something cool, on the other hand if it's too low then you need to bundle up.

    a-la Planescape Torment damage indicators?

Or, like DOOM as well. I suppose not many people will have played Torment.

I am not sure, I think it should stay as a bar, or a thermostat. Something nice, clean, unobstructive, and easy to read.

Another idea could be that your character comments on his/her condition, they could say different things depending on the temperature, and each quote gaining more urgent as the temperature reaches an extreme. You could then put this into a UI similar to how food is handled.

It was stated before that the devs didn't want temperature to be too complex. They only wanted to account for instances of extreme cold.

I like this idea the most. On or beside the icon there could also be flashing blue/red arrows that show how hot/cold the character is getting and how fast. If he's in underwear and swimming in a frozen lake the character would be shivering in the portrait and there would be three quickly blinking blue arrows that are pointing down beside it. If the character is wearing a turtleneck sweater that is on fire in the desert then the character will be sweating and steamy, and there will be three up facing red arrows. If he's wearing no pants and a sweater while walking through snow he will be slightly shivering and there will be just one slowly blinking blue arrow.

This really seems like the kind of nit-picky decision that could have been left for post-release.

was just thinkin how about not giving us a bar / numbers

could leave us in the dark

the character could change visually (sweat, icy breath ect)

you would have to get a feeling for how much you can endure
to make sure to avoid what ever negatives this comes with

Maybe show frost and icicles building up on your character?

    basicly

think that would be more natural then a bar
and it makes it more interesting then just reading the number/bar

Or the screen edges? As if a space helmet were frosting over?

I like the idea of any indicator that doesn't show up till it's needed. Seems like, as it's been described, most of the time you won't be worrying about temp. So most of the time it'll just be clutter.
