Everyone loves their base, their home. It's a place where you can finally feel safe from the dangers of the world and do your business in peace. In Terraria you can build walls to protect your base, but if you have a small town for NPCs, you need a huge ceiling to protect them from flying enemies at night. Or in hell, you can't build in piece with demons flying everywhere, mice teleporting and shooting fire that can no-clip through your walls. That's why in starbound I would love to see a sort of turret system similar to age of war. The turrets automatically aim at the nearest enemy within a short range and protect you base. They would be fairly hard to craft and there are many possibilities for ranks. You might start with a turret that shoots eggs, then maybe arrows, then cannons, then bullets, then lasers. Upgraded turrets could also have greater range, damage, and vary in firing rates. Turrets could help create a safe environment for building and living (especially on higher level planets) and could be used for protection, traps, combat and more. Of course, a few other things need to be considered. for one, the turrets shouldn't give drops. Players could just make a huge dark pit with a turret, leave it for a while, then collect a massive amount of drops. It would help turrets be used what they're meant for; why that being said, if an enemy is damaged a large deal by the player, it should still give a drop. It would suck to almost kill a rare enemy with rare drops only to have a turret get the final blow. EDIT: Now that I think about it, turrets should also be vulnerable to being shot down or broken with guns so they don't become to powerful in PVP.

I could totally image turrets in combat. You're just walking around, minding your own business, when a boss mob appears! So you plop out your sentryto try and keep the massive beast at bay. Or even have turrets set to attack different targets. Have a turret take out small but abundant creatures while you focus on a larger creature. Definitely could be awesome. EVERYONE UP VOTE THIS IDEA
I love the idea, but i would prefer to have many turret types, with different triggers eg. there is a tripwire and a hostile creature trips the wire and now the turret shoots rapidly at the creature.

Yes we will get them either way, officially or through mods. And since i really want my modular turrets, because i think anything else doesnt fit into starbound with its procedually generated weapons and npcs, i would add it myself when it isnt done officially and we can do it
I want to see a turret that shoots cannons. Other than that though, I would just prefer there to be something stopping creatures from spawning in my base. Like the sort of thing where the longer you spend in an area that you've built in, the less creatures spawn.
This suggestion like almost all other turret suggestions were made before anyone knew about guards. However, guards are mobile, most turrets are not. You could also ask the other way around, wouldnt guards defeat the purpose of turrets aswell? The question is how to give each of them their own use.
Well, if turrets had a limited duration I could see how both could exist without making the other redundant. Guards patrol a very small area. A deployable turret or turrets would definitely be useful for a boss fight, or protecting your character while you went to the bathroom, since you can't pause the game without quitting, or you can quit while you go to the bathroom and then you'd have to restart from your ship and navigate all the way back to where you were previously.
This thread was created before I knew guard NPCs could be created. I still think they could both be in the game. but turrets would have to be either very expensive, or very under powered.
