Server Help Trying to get other pc to run server.

Up until recently, ive been running a server on my pc (then it died) The back up pc i have cant run the server and game at the same time because the thing cant handle it. The server does work fine, people can connect easily.

However attempting to run the server on my roomies pc is fruitless. Nothing i do works. I can connect locally, but not publicly. I tried figuring out if it was just the wrong ip, however both our ips are the same, which i discovered is because we run through the same router. Its not the firewall, im certain of this, as ive checked it, and even tried shutting the firewall and antivirus off, and i still cant connect to her server publicly.
I should be able to connect, yet i cannot. She can connect to my server when i run it without doing it locally.

This is where i am lost.

This is nice and all, but its only managed to give me yet another possible maybe. Most probably because i have only just recently (november) discovered that over the last decade of my life, most of which i spent wallowing in unintelligible anger and hatred against all other server owners, that i indeed was not an idiot and that i have been port forwarding flawlessly, and that the real fault was not in my unskilled labors but actually in the bloody router not being set up properly. (oh and about 2 of those years i was cursing the existence of this router as for the longest time it didnt seem to even exist anywhere, much like many peoples brains.... Oh and also mark that up as one of my most longest sentences ever spawned 5 hours after i should have been asleep. Oh joy.)

It is possible that its this interesting and cleverly abbreviated NAT is the cause of all my eye gouging practices, but there are other things that i have read that all just mash up into garbled doodads that form blurry words that have all been shot out of a shotgun, and makes about equal sense.

In shorter words. If this NAT thing is a hindrance, how the bloody hell do i turn it off so that i can see if its really a hindrance? And if thats not the issue, what is, though that goes without saying.

So you can type all that, then ask a specific question about your router, but provide no information about said router.
You are in need of help, right?
When you want to take the time that others are lending for your support seriously, then go a head and provide some useful information, and not ranting banter...

Your hostility is not necessary. If you don't want to help, don't post.

What IP address are you using to connect?

If you are both on the same LAN, you should be connecting to your roommate's LAN IP address. I'm guessing you are using the WAN or internet IP address obtained from a site like icanhazip.com. To find your LAN IP address, open a command prompt first. Hold the windows key and press R. In the box that appears, type "cmd" and press enter. You should now have a black box with white text to type in. In there, type "ipconfig" and look for the IPv4 address of the network interface you are using.

There was no hostility. Sorry you saw it that way. I already posted, indicating that I was willing to help. I merely pointed out that all that effort has gone for nothing, as I still didn't have any useful information to further help their situation.

Just for the record, are you a forum Admin or Moderator? You did the same thing in my thread too. If there is a problem, by all means report it.

Look, there's no need to be hostile in any way, just stop this and try to help each other out, please! =E
Keep it nice and smooth, smooth moves like smooth little babies~

You need to redo the port forwarding to route traffic to your new computer running the server. You have the same external IP because of your ISP, but internally, your computers have different IPs and the router is trying to send the server traffic to your computers old IP, but nothing is there. So all you need to do is re-map the port to your other computer.

NAT is the whole reason port forwarding works. Without it, port forwarding would not work, and you literally could not communicate outside your home network to the internet.

actually he has a point. in order to know how to disable anything about the nat or w/e one would want to know about the router. It was 5 in the morning and i passed out after posting. This is my excuse xD

In either case this doesnt work, as i already tried it. her ipv4 does not exist because its not what the internet sees. because we both go through the same router, there is only one ip, despite hers and mine having separate ips. I.e. i have 1.2.3 she has 1.2.4 but the internet sees 1.4.5 because of the router. Atleast this is what ive been able to determine, since neither of us have an ipv4 thats remotely close to the routers.

This would explain why two of my ports are permaclosed. However, im not sure how to redo the port forwarding either. Ive attempted to port forward earlier, but it didnt seem to free up the ports that were permaclosed, which is probably a good indication that it didnt work. (router info down)

Though we dont use it as a wireless. its hooked up via cable.
And all the pcs are hooked up via cat5. because wireless is terrible.

Im not sure you even know what port forwarding is...

Ports can't be "permaclosed". They are all closed by default, unless some application opens them, or you open them manually. All you need to do is log in to your router, find the port forwarding section, and tell it to route the desired port to the desired internal IP address.

Probably something like this. Im assuming you click on add custom service and it will ask you the port number you want.

LANs are like a closed container with the only way out being the gateway, which resides on the router. You can't just point traffic at the closed container from the internet and expect it to hit a computer on the inside. That's why you have to poke holes in the container so things from the internet can see in.

Back to your issue... What IPv4 address does your roommate's computer show when you run ipconfig from a command line? What does yours show?

no i knew that. when i say permaclosed, i mean the router still thinks those two ports are still in use, and thus tells everything else that those ports are in use, and thus closed off to everything else. otherwise i have absolutely no explanation as to why those ports are inaccessible.
I came to this conclusion btw, since these two ports were used for RoR and the other for Starbound. In starbounds case, its the main 21025 port.

this guy made me notice something, and may be part of the issue.

i seem to be lacking a public ipv4.. in case you didnt notice.

  14. The ipconfig you show is normal, the relevant part is in "Ethernet adapter"

Your local ip (where you have run ipconfig) is 192.168.1.3
    Its gateway is 192.168.1.1

Now if you need to forward something from 192.168.1.1 (I believe is your internet box) to the computer you need to create a nat rule on 192.168.1.1, meaning you dedicate a port number open on 192.168.1.1 that will forward anything to 192.168.1.3 X port

But keep in mind if one day your ip 192.168.1.3 changes (happens when you are not setting a static ip on the computer) then the rule is broken and will not work

If you are trying to connect from inside your LAN only, you don't need to forward ports. Simply run the server on your roommate's computer then input the IP address 192.168.1.3 to connect from your computer.

  17. usually you have an admin interface on your box accessible with http, here is http://192.168.1.1 then I add a rule in a section called NAT, but it is different from a router to another, can give you a pic :

this one shows an old Terraria rule anything arrivinf on internet:7777 is forwarded to 192.168.1.101:7777 (my comp)
You can also notice Im sharing rules with my dad , hes on 192.168.1.48

oooh i think i know what im doing wrong then. -facepaw- ive been setting the local ip for mine, which is why its been working for mine. i assumed that it was for both. it makes sense now. I shall test this.
