Tried the new patch, wont accept trees/coal as fuel

Why it's almost as if that's why one was worth twice as much fuel as the other.

Hm maybe they shouldnt remove wood completly. Just nerfing it. Wood as fuel is kinda OP like it was but getting rid of it was a little bit too much IMO. I mean we have nowadays biofuel and that works also fine (well sorta...).
Maybe you could turn wood somehow into biofuel providing 1/2 of the efficiency coal does. And wood would do 1/12 "fuel units".

I mean its just a suggestion, but there should be renewable fuels in the game. Theres a limited ammount of planets (although its almost infinitly big) but it is kinda disturbing to be confronted with the fact that you run out of energy at some point. I mean we have this issue in real life, do we need it here? :p

Sure its a survival/exploration game. But just change the wood effieciency a bit, make it harder to be used as fuel and it should be fine... atleast IMO.

Also about wood makes 0 sense in ships... Coal doesnt make sense either. It has way too less energy efficiency. The stuff you find later in the game makes more sense... stuff you use to power a nuclear fission reactor... which brings me to the idea to be able to refine Deuterium for nuclear fusion as power source (from fossile fuel to nuclear fission to nuclear fusion... wow), slow progress but the refinery would work under each thick body of water and each time you are on the planet. Once you got Deuterium you can put it into the ship reactor and get out of 4 Deuterium units 20 points of energy or that. Find rarer tricium and double the efficiency from 1 deuterium and 1 tricium to 40 points of energy. But as I said just an idea, and it should take quite a bit to get deuterium/tricium with a refinery, and it should only work when you are on the planet. Oh and to avoid camping over night there... the refinery would have a cap of 5 tricium and deuterium each so you will need to emptyfie it frequently.

If you'd like to have a use for wood (though not as opped as it were), I've created a mod that not only allows you to smelt wood to coal, but also allows you to produce other types of fuel as well. Working on it even more to add a completely renewable resource (Particle Fuel), and hope to have that done before the night is through.

You can find my mod here: http://community.playstarbound.com/index.php?resources/spacefuel-tamefoxx.8/

I looked into modding wood so that it could be placed in a furnace and then burned into charcoal, and then charcoal could be used at a 2 to 1 ratio in place of coal for fuel and other things.

Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any functionality for secondary material options. It's either one or the other, or you have to make multiple recipes for the new material.

Is that really "whack"? I would suppose being too few wood for how much charcoal is made, but not the other way around. It's easy to gain 1000+ wood on a lot of the planets pretty quickly. I made that ratio taking in mind that wood will no longer be used as a fuel source.

It's not too high, hell a 12-to-1 ratio would be better. You can still land on a forest planet and gather like 3,000 wood in 10 minutes.

Yeah, who wants to explore the stars in Starbound, I mean really.

If it's not time consuming and plodding, then it shouldn't happen because ~reasons!~

Debating about fuel sources at this point is probably a bit pointless. I doubt coal OR wood will be used eventually, replaced by some other system. Mechanically, I think this change is positive, it incentivises exploring down, and there are actually things down there. They increased the amount of coal ore, and the occurrences of the underground special areas as well.

That said, It makes having a "home" besides your ship hard, and it already was a bit hard resource wise. I'd like to see some item that would make travel to your home planet vastly cheaper. Like a warp beacon or something. Of course on that same topic, an ability to change the beam down location would be great as well.

Land on a forest planet, take out your axe and proceed to cut down 20 times the amount of coal you could hope to find in that span of time.

I can always adjust the amount, it's pretty easy. I'll up it in the next update.

There's a time-to-gain ratio in tasks for a reason, the same reason they removed wood as a fuel. If you're impatient than cheat, it's what you're suggesting anyway.

Or hell, the person who downloads the mod can (which was the primary thrust of my argument). Just saying, 10:1 to make coal is pretty ridiculously over-the-top, and playing into this stupid "tedium = challenge" mindset that people seem to love.

  16. Zulgaines

    Zulgaines Scruffy Nerf-Herder

It is not over the top at all. It would be easier to gather than coal even if it was a 15-to-1 ratio and gives a secondary early fuel source. Your mindset placed on the rest of the game would have us in X-Sector in about an hour of play.

Yeah, who wants to explore lots of unique, interesting planets in a game who has "explore lots of unique, interesting planets" as one if its bulletpoint features. That would be silly.

It takes you less then 5 seconds to cut down a tree, and they are often grouped next to one another to prevent travel time almost completely. Each tree yields between 16-30(ish). Clear a forest of 10 trees and that's 160-300 wood. Convert that to coal at 10:1 = 16-30. Once you get 35 and 250 pixels you can convert that to 100 fuel. So, it's really a ratio (if only using wood), of 3.5:1 if you produce the coal ship fuel. -Le gasp!- It requires work making space fuel!? Ludicrous!

You're argument is invalidated by the nature of the game. You start with nothing and are expected to build up from that.

Part of the build up is higher tier fuel sources. Your short sighted desire would break the balance in every tier beyond the first galaxy and make wood the only fuel source worth getting due to the ridiculously high time-to-gain ratio it has compared to all other fuel sources.

How can wood power a spaceship? Cmon people its the future

We should just stick to arguing fuel types and their game balance.
