Okay, so everyone wants to be able to get from one side of their world to the other really fast, right? So here's the answer! Magnet Trains! So, first of all, you need to build some train tracks. We need rails, or something. Since this is a Magnet Train, you need a line of magnets or something. (See my magnetic blocks thread here) Then, you build a magnet train using some magnetic blocks, and an engine or something, and Bam! You have super fast transportation between any two points of your magnet rails! What do you guys think? Handy? Or am I overthinking this?
Sounds good, but i think it'd rely on quite a few other things that we don't know will be implemented yet :S
Fly? How? Like with Wings, in Terraria? The point of the trains are to take you places at, say, 100 blocks per second. Pretty darn fast, much faster than you could fly. I mean, people can outspeed sparrows, with cars, I mean. Vehicles trump natural! Of course, if you meant fly in the Spaceship, that might be an option. But that would NOT stop me from getting into a magnet train.
hahaha i thought you meant a bit slower than 100 blocks/sec. i was thinking about the flying machines/mounts that we will be given. this train idea sounds awesome!
My idea for the train, is that no matter how far your tracks reach, you can get into the train at one end and out of the other almost immediately. We could even have stations, and such, so that multiple people could be in the trains at once, and just hop out of the train when it pauses at a station!
I seriously endorse this idea, for I plan to have multiple cities on the same planet, with a large distance between them. Speed does not really matter to me, however an instant transit doesn't sound like much fun, what with losing the opportunity to appreciate the time spent building the track, not to mention the scenery during travel.
It wouldn't be instant, and maybe we could do something like the Timers in Terraria. A copper(or whatever is a pretty base metal) Train goes, say 25 blocks per second. A silver(or slightly higher tier metal) Train goes 50 blocks per second, and a gold (you get the idea) Train goes 100 blocks per second. Should the trains be split into three tiers? Or maybe even more? Also, what about Cargo cars for the train? They could function identically to treasure chests, so that you could move mass amounts of materials between locations.
This is a really great idea, but take into account the worlds are "round" and the world is 2d which would mean the rails would have to cover every single block from one point to another around the world.
I see no problem with that. If the worlds had edges like in Terraria, I would simply build two separate tracks that head in opposite directions. With Starbound, you can make just one really long track or build two.
I'll be either romping around in my mech, or flying with a jetpack, but this would be nice for corporation-style planets. I see no problem with having magnet trains, it's efficient! You could sit down in it, and go faster than you can say "Hermes boots". A train going in the opposite direction would need a separate rail, though. Probably on a different level, like eastward would be top, and westbound would be bottom. It should be a bit costly to make though, since the sheer speed you can have with this.
