Guns to melee will never be balanced, you can do what you want, but its not possible to balance it. On top of that 1000s of weapons exist now go and balance that all to make any PvP fun. Its not possible and not the thing there should even waste time on. I don't find Terraria PvP fun at all.
Only way I can see PvP fun and viable is to restrict battles to one type of weapon and tech combo for use on said arena with disabled building/mining.
There can be guilds and you enter into combat on premade arenas either sword or gun combat, ranging from simple duels to team combat.

As I said, I'm looking at multiple possible ways to balance a magazine, including pixel cost, energy cost, or a combination depending on weapon type.

As if plenty of melee weapons don't come with their own built in ranged attack.

If I had made Starbound, melee weapons would be nothing more than a utility in late game, like how a combat knife is a situation utility more than an actual weapon in today's armies. Progression would be SO much simpler if your character upgraded from melee to guns in later tiers.

I tried using ranger armor, just ended up getting 2 or 3 hitted. So, I decided to just use mage armor since at least then I might have a chance of survival since I have more energy to fire guns and use techs.

PvP will suck if you think it will be like a closed arena... This will work better if it's something like Capture the Flag.

Obviously it's the most expensive playstyle. Giving players access to the refinery earlier would offset the killing and pot smashing grind.

Guns are really great at killing things without putting you in harms way. That's extremely powerful when facing a melee oriented enemy. The optimal play-style for guns would be to always stay within a comfortable range. Techs help with this, but they consume the same energy you currently use as ammo, meaning you have a choice of either getting the hell away from the melee guy at the expense of damage or unloading on him and then not being able to escape or re-position fast enough before they overcome you.

Pixel Cost adds a separate resource pool that acts as a limiter so you can't just sit on a sniper nest firing infinite bullets at everything while allowing you the freedom you need to use your techs to maintain your ranged advantage. A reload time function also prevents a never ending hail of death.

Early game? Yeah, it's expensive. But there aren't any pixel sinks early game (or late game) beyond cosmetic furniture from the 3D printer and shops that sell items that you can get by yourself easier and much cheaper. Late game, depending on how expensive the Uber God-Killing guns are to reload, you won't have to worry about a pixel sink.

Starwars would like a word with you. Lightsabers beat your dinky ranged shit any time of the day

Unless it's buckshot. Then Lightsabers lose just because the saber user can't manage to block every last scrap of shrapnel, and there's no Force Push to cover one's posterior here.

No but there's dodging. But Shrapnel can't go through armor. Sabers can :p

That would be because lightsabers can deflect lasers and Jedi can use the force to see the future to know exactly how to block it.

Last time I checked, we have neither the force nor laser deflecting lightsabers in this game.

I completely agree with your opinions.

Hunger wise, honestly, there are difficulty settings for a reason. Either make it a separate "Realism" check box, or just make "Normal" mode have hunger. There is a reason for the casual check box. Right now the only difference between the two is a loss of ore, which honestly isn't that much of a penalty.

Food wise, I really enjoyed Terraria's potion system. I LOVE collecting items/farming, making fun little potions, and preparing for a mission like in the Witcher series. The new food system with all the buffs really got me excited. UNTIL i saw the ridiculous cooldowns. Not only that, but the whole guessing game of "what does this food do" is pretty irritating. At least give me a little tooltip saying "Makes you run faster". Let me figure out the strength of it i guess.

Ammo wise, as someone said earlier with the ammo belt, great idea. The energy system now is insanely bad. You can fire a few shots, kill maybe 1-2 enemies, then have to hop around until you're able to even be a part of combat again. Either make an ammo system (It's really not that bad guys, with different kinds of craftable ammo it could be very fun), or go with the ammo belt system mentioned by a post earlier.

Obviously, this is unstable, and things are subject to change. I just hope they DO change.

They could better balance guns and melee by having more unique armor bonuses. If melee was "+ move speed" and some other stuff, then they could catch the ranged guy without making it impossible to use guns and tech at the same time. Meanwhile, the ranged set should have things like "+% rate of fire" and "+% reload speed", if an unlimited ammo magazine solution were used (which I think is the best way to go). Having variable reload times would also do a lot to differentiate the randomly created weapons.

First I apologize for any typos using my phone so yeahhh.... Secondly PvP on hardvore characters was a huge thing in D2 and many other games. Its where you ran into the best PvP players cause you had to to keep your characters.

To the person said that PvP is fun or balanced in Terraria that is hilarious melee has ALWAYS been the weak child in that game. Without mods guntech slaughtered you prefer 1.2 now magic does. Different games though.

I think a way to balance guns might be this: make it so that guns have infinite ammo but a reload bar to balance this make it so that when you are reloading you CANNOT use techs or energy at all. Meaning you have to be careful when you press that R button. This would have an issue of needing another bar for guns otherwise a gun focuses person could just carry 10 guns and reload them between fights. I think a reload system is better than an ammo system less inventory clutter and less issue with the right ammo for the right gun

I assume you're referring to me.

Terraria PvP is a lot more balanced than Starbound PvP. This is partially because most high level Melee characters have beam swords to make them pseudo-ranged. Also, Melee rips Rangers and Mages to shreds at close range in it. The only difference is that everyone is on equal footing in it as opposed to Starbound where Rangers and Mages (especially Mages- no moving while attacking? Are you serious?) lose all their mobility if they want to fire their significantly weaker weapons.

Anyway, on balance in Starbound. I don't think disabling tech while reloading is a good idea. Maybe halved movespeed with techs, though?

Honestly, I have to agree just because of the point you brought up on everyone being on equal footing. I think I pointed out before, but Accessories can help close the gap between weapon types immensely and make up for the weaknesses of that class, or amplify their strengths. (See, multiple melee tank characters with Paladin Shields.) The other thing is that armor sets themselves were better balanced or more interested and conferred bonuses beyond just straight stats that could actually blur the line between a ranger, a mage, or a warrior depending on your setup. (Also, don't forget the relatively underpowered but potent Summoner/Minion Master class.)

    This post is spot on.

Also, I didn't mention the Summoner class because it's currently a non-thing in PvP (though hopefully the manual targeting gets added), and Starbound doesn't really have a counterpart. I mean, there's the capture pod thing, but that's mainly a gimmick if we're being realistic.

I'm just guessing that they're saving more progress on Agriculture and the Food System once they reached the part where they start working on it as a Progression path.

Yeah, I know, but PvE it's still a fun class that doesn't fall behind any of the other classes, unlike literally everything compared to melee here. The Capture Pod system could be a comparable equivalent but it is little more than a gimmick right now. A very unpolished, basic gimmick that has little to nothing going for it, especially now that the monster system revamp has occurred. Once it gets fleshed out and you add in things like being able to not only capture but evolve monsters as well, the ability to recall them once summoned, maybe even equip them or gene mod them, ect., then it would be a viable sub-class and a valuable component for any player who invests in it. Though to be frank there is a literal ton of work that needs to go into that system and we're not going to see anything viable out of it for a while.

(That being said manual targeting to tell minions what to attack would be greatly appreciated.)

What drives me insane about this whole situation is that we have firearm reloading sounds in the game files right now. Considering how old they are, why they're still there and whether they mean anything for the future is anyone's guess.
