To the devs - will there be spiders?

I actually feel really bad now. I thought the OP was being silly. I didn't doubt the phobia, but I couldn't conceive that the poster would be legitimately afraid of spiders in-game. I'm not sure if the OP will return, but I hope you will still play Starbound. Even if some creatures have spider like features, they are not the spiders we know, so I hope that thought will help ease you a bit. It does sound like you have a pretty severe phobia, and I'm sorry if anything in this thread upset you. While I can't fully understand the depth of your fear, I can relate to it. I'm actually really afraid of spiders myself. I had pretty horrible dreams as a child. My fear doesn't usually affect my daily life, however, there was one time I had to pull over because there was a spider in my car (err, a few times actually) and I wasn't able to enter the car again until someone got the spider out. I thnk that's the extent of my fear. It used to be a lot worse, but I started researching them a bit, and I managed to develop a healthy respect for them. It doesn't mean I'll remain calm if one is on me, but I won't freak out if I see o e on a wall far away from me.


......after I posted I realized I underplayed how much spiders affect my life. Just two nights ago I woke up my fiancé frantic because I thought a spider was on my leg, and I was frozen in fear. It ended up being my cats tail, but I must have conveniently blocked it out of my memory until now.

 

I want that as my mount.

I really wish that more would, especially the games that are worse. I know that on the scale of things, spiders in World of Warcraft are not that bad, but they still scared me a lot. I always wished I could have turned them into bunnies, and I got carried through Naxxramas. You can, but its totally hard and a lot of effort. I am making strides in the right direction but its taking a really long time.

If I know now, I can prepare and maybe start to go in the right direction and be okay.

I know technically, spiders are good, because they eat all the bad bugs etc. Its mostly the movement that really scares me, when they start racing towards you at the speed of light. After seeing the picture which is now removed, I had to put up my hair because I couldn't stand it being on the back of my neck because I couldn't tell if it was actually my hair.

I ultimately hate that I have this issue, but its not one that solves itself overnight. I've come a long way, but I always just have to be prepared now going into a new game and ask this question.

 

My mother has an aversion to scary things and has to leave the room during scary scenes in movies. She especially has a zombie phobia but does surprisingly okay with it at times in games. I've played Minecraft with her and I make sure to kill the zombies for her.

Belle, if you can, bring a friend! Luckily for you, Starbound will probably not force you to participate in a spider planet, but if you do, your friend can slay them all for you.

One thing to remember is the devs plan for starbound to be heavily modifiable. If you see a part that triggers the issue, you should be able to mod it out without to much trouble. If it is ask on the modding part of the site when the forumoderators put it up and someone will probably be kind enough to help out.. Assuming of course multiple spider like parts make it in, in the first place.

I presume your original question has been answered, the art-style is pretty cute and so are the majority of the monsters. But thought it might interest you that simulations, such as video games, can be used as therapy to treat phobias like this. Because the subject knows it's a simulation, they can face their fears bravely in a safe environment, where no actual harm would be possible.

 

Even if arachnoid enemies where a more frequent occurance then predicted the moddable nature of Starbound will in all likelihood offer ways to alleviate this, much like what was done in Skyrim where a simple mod can replace the models of spider-type enemies with things less threatening to arachnophobes like in the example below.

 

I used to really struggle with spiders until I found the peacock spider. I honestly never thought I'd meet a spider that made me go "d'awww." Jumping spiders in general tend towards adorable as far as stills go.

 

Sadly I doubt that the devs are going to go out of their way to change something just cause some people have a phobia of it, in that case there wouldn't be much content because everyone is scared of something. I know phobias are worse then that, but the point still stands. I am not trying to be mean or saying that peoples phobias don't matter, but people can't expect developers to take out stuff just cause a small portion of people are afraid to that point. I know you weren't asking them too, but I'm sure there are people that are going to ask it eventually

There will more then likely be a mod that can remove any of the spider like parts, so you shouldn't worry so much. Plus with the randomly generated nature of this, I doubt you'll be seeing anything that resembles a spider, unless the devs add in a unique mob of one. Either way, it might happen but it'll be a rare occurrence. And if you DO happen to find one on a planet, get the heck off that planet and find a new planet. Easy as that.

 

...I have the urge to post a picture of Goliath Birdeater. I don't think that there will be 'spiders' maybe some sort of combination of arachnid + something, but it wouldn't resemble a spider that much. How about a solifugae? I'm not helping, am I? Spiders fear you more than you fear them. Or well, if you don't disturb it. I need to stop this.

 

Try looking at the randomly generated nonsters, the stickied thread is a good place too start. There you will get a general feel for the art style and maby some of the more spiderlike parts.

I hope there will be spiders! I've actually grown accustomed to spiders, as well as scorpions, and a lot of very obscure types of arachnids. Gotta love Arizona. xD

i know that issue wi hating spiders, but strangely the bigger the spider the less problem i have with it. Small 3x3mm spiders freak me out, a tarantula is just not nice, but no problem. Crazy, huh?

Okay, I will try to state the "scary" things about them.

Umm... They have... 8 legs?
Aaand... They are small?

Come on, nothing is scary about them.

However, if you want a fright, have a fact: You are always often almost always within three feet of a spider.
