To the devs - will there be spiders?

I'll start off by saying that I feel your pain, I am arachnophobic at preoccupying levels.

However, spiders in videogames don't bother me that much, mostly because their movements are usually not realistic and... well I guess my brain realizes they are in the game partly, but that's probably not it because I can assure you that watching pictures of spiders on my computer is just as terrible as looking at a real one. (unfortunately I have come across a few in this very forum used as funny reaction images, I think there should be a campaign or something like that for this, like denying both sexually explicit pictures AND the most common phobias, these things can ruin a day guys!)

So... I don't know, from what you said you seem to be scared of in-game spiders as well, which I kind of can't relate too (with one oddly specific exception), but I mean, comon, have you seen Starbound's graphics? It's all colorful and pixelly, I'm sure you'll do fine. As for your actual question, you should be warned that some procedurally generated quadrupeds CAN spawn with four spider-y legs as shown by the generated monsters so far. Again, I don't think you should be worried.

If there is anything that even remotly look like a spider in the game, I doubt it will be very... spidery looking? The mobs we have seen so far have a definit cartoonish look. I would not worry too much about that if I where you.

 

Daddylong legs are supposed to be very deadly, but they can't break our skins.

 

Yeah I've heard this too, thankfully they're harmless to us...

 

All things considered, I will be boycotting this game until there is a 5 hour fetch quest involving killing millions of spiders and rats in a basement of a pub.

Arachnaphobia has always plagued me whenever spiders or scorpions show up in games, specifically the Fallout series and Elder Scrolls. As a man, I always jumped onto a table and held my purse tight whenever I saw a radscorpion/giant spider.

As a fellow arachnophobe I can tell you that gif scared the crap out of me. I'm pretty hardened but after awhile, even VG spiders get to me a little, and are usually a part of games that I try to avoid. I think this subject tends to be bought up in games sometimes. I think there probably should be an option to make the game more accessible. It's just a matter of not using the spider parts in the monster generation code according to a user's preference, or having an alternative to replace it visually.

I have heard of games starting to do this now. But it's still an often overlooked problem.
