Regardless of Tiy's statement please keep this thread to the legal side of things regarding other games, we don't want to open Chucklefish up to issue with other companies.

Once again, Tiy proves to be totally awesome :D So glad I'm supporting this game.

This is one of the games that I actually didn't pirate first. Thought the devs deserved the money for their hard work.

But yeah, it's a good way to do stuff. Pirate it to see if you enjoy it. If you do, buy it. To think that's a crime is a little baffling.

I think thats the primary concern really, It's why we don't get honest demos anymore, we get demos of the best parts of the game to sell it to us if we get one at all.
I believe i read an article a long time ago that showed demos actually decreased the chances of the person playing it buying the product advertised.

I really think It's more about the audience that would've never bought it at all if there was no demo.

There are 2 reasons for me to pirate a game:

    1. See if a potential good game is worth buying and supporting the dev by doing so
    2. Playing a game which is known to be good but got published by someone I absolutley dont want to support *looking in EA's direction with the Evileye*

I still want to play Simcity 2013 to this day, but i never will because of It's draconic DRM.

Yeah there is a little graph which showed that games which only had a trailer selled more copies than games with a trailer AND a demo or just with a demo.
I guess the imiagination play a huge role if you just saw the trailer.

 Oh please the DRM got cracked, what like 48 hours after the release?

EA and their DRM policy is so smallminded.

I'm not really certain if you are hurting EA by choosing not to purchase one of their games. In a case like that, I suspect you're doing more damage to the developer than the publisher. I could be wrong.

From a Dev's perspective it's hard to know who bought it when they liked it though, and that is just straight theft. Tiy is cool to have this attitude though.

It's too bad there's not a Spotify for games. I remember a GameFly or something commercial once, but never checked it out since Steam's games are so cheap on sale. (I'm a steam sale junkie :D)

I only do it with games I cant possibly get around and EA didnt released any of those lately anyway.

DRM never works. It always gets cracked, and usually within days of release. Even when a company like EA puts millions into their DRM, the result is failure. It would be silly to invest time and effort into something that has a 100% chance of failure. Even worse for business, the cracked products, being without the hassle of DRM, are better than the legitimate product. DRM only hurts customers and never hurts pirates. The only rational thing to do is to reach out to pirates and try to convert them to customers. I'm glad Tiy can see that, and it speaks well of his leadership ability.

Is Diablo 3 cracked and playable already? Haven't heard of that... Doesn't matter, for true Diablo fans the only real Diablo 3 is Path of Exile anyway.

But it's been a while since I pirated a game... Any game, last time I downloaded Pokemon Black 2 to play it on my PC and that's about it, I've been buying every game I played for a long time now.

he's just being realistic and avoiding a pointless argument about making a demo at the same time.

-also its beta. The frequent updates alone would force someone who likes the game to eventually buy it to avoid the hassle. Kind of works like a roundabout DRM in a way. Lets see if he has the same mindset when SB is fully released.

I'm all for pirating. ive brought more indie games because of pirating than i would have without. In fact, the only reason i'm into indie games today is because of the few i pirated years ago. Since then i've bought more than my fair share of stinkers- so i guess it was Karma/retribution..whatever you want to call it. Ive put more back into the indie community than ive ever pirated.

Hotline Miami Dev was actually on pirating websites helping people who pirated his game, fix the problems the pirated versions had.

Some people though, are adamant on "Hey, free games forever" and simply won't buy, which saddens me.

And unlike Diablo 3, Path of Exile is free. Blizzard's got some competition. :D

    On topic:
I mostly pirate to demo a game, if I didn't get enough info to satisfy me from reviews and gameplay vids. On the rare occasion, I may pirate for revenge to get back some of my money that was 'stolen' by a really crappy game (I'm looking at you, Mass Effect 3).

Why? You do realize if you do this it encourages them to put in even more DRM. People worked on this and for what? You and other people pirating EA games beacause "hurr durr I h8 Ea1 lets pirat der gams"

You and others are the reason DRM exists. Buy the game if you like it. Your no better than EA.

Funny thing is, that's exactly what I did with SB, yes, I pirated it. And then, week after I finally bought 4 copies of the game.
    Tiy for the president!

  19. Too many people say that they'll "buy it if they like it" and then never do.

As far as I'm concerned, the ONLY viable reason to pirate a game is if it's not available in your country.

Good attitude, years ago when I was a student I used to pirate tons of stuff (granted you'd have to go through warez sites and serial generators and the odd BBS) due to simply not having a credit card or much money spare. If it helps his work get into the hands of more future clients all the better for them.

These days I just buy things I'm interested or maybe interested in. If it helps devs keep providing me the media that I like to consume, great. Really even a 50 or 60 buck title if I get 10 hours out of it is still dirt cheap entertainment compared to anything else I do for fun. He's asking a pittance for what he's produced so far.
