Tiny bit of FPS optimization?

I know its not on the agenda list til second and third phase of the beta. But just putting alittle bit of optimization would help alot of people. I know alot of the problems i've been experiencing with the game (Such as avoiding combat and underground caves) are due to the FPS lag with monsters and combat. This dramatically hinders my enjoyment, or rather true ability to test. I know lower end machines aren't brought up in the equation, but I'd like to start a quick thread so people can at least say what's causing them issues with FPS lag and such. (Rain is a prime example.)

I can run perfectly, until it rains. Then its absolutely unplayable because of the lag.

Anything optimize will eventually just break again.
Since the system changes so much it would be a never ending battle.
Also wasting time in a never ending battle is not the best way to appropriate time.

    But I feel ya.
When I run into a place with 100+ light sources it starts causing FPS drops

This is what happened to me on the windows version on the linux version it seemed to run more smoothly then before.. But however battling is tricky. The monsters have massive advantage especially the charge and body slam ones. It makes combat pain...

Play online. The game chugs the CPU and then it spikes. This causes everything to slow down including world rendering. FPS isn't the only thing taking a hit for people. The game loading things also suffers. I get decent frames and I play on a specific server. Currently, on this 64 mb memory server that can run 100 people on Minecraft with no block lag, Starbound becomes unplayable after 5 minutes. If someone removes a lot of sand right after a restart, it goes back to lagging. The game is in desparate need of some base optimization and no amount of 'this is beta, you guys have -insert stupid internet funny word like potato or bacon here-' will change that.

    Pretty basic-not-amazing-but-works stuff.

My GPU is a bit bleh, but still. There isn't any reason Starbound, a 2D game, needs to have a massive framerate drop just from some rain. It runs perfectly otherwise.

I honestly think mine should run way better than 20 fps.... drops down to 5 in heavily populated areas.

i had a bit of trouble with the fps.. still do but turning off v-sync has almost doubled my fps..

go to the starbound config log.. the xml file and change the 'v-sync: true' to false and save!

Did not have any fps problems till the December 15th update now choppy and laggy while picking things up and populated areas

I get fairly decent FPS during normal play, and unlike what you guys' common problem seems to be, rain doesn't affect my FPS that much, maybe by 3 to 7 frames? However, it gets really laggy really fast when there are very many AI's around. Like, 5 NPCs starts lagging it up, Apex Hotel village things are a nightmare. :c

I have a friend who plays with me whos computer is lower grade but can run games like Terraria. Whenever it snows or rains he gets massive drop in fps.

MIne is well above reqs and I get serious drops. As someone mentioned, Apex buildings really cause slowdown. So do monsters, especially in caves. Open landscapes are fine.

I have no problem at all with the game and I run the server along-side it for friends. Granted, with machines like we have, it should destroy a side-scroller anyway.... vast overkill graphically. I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that your hardware isn't the problem. There could be (probably are) some flaws in the game preventing it from soaring. You should look for the obvious problems... bring up task manager and check out perfomance stats to make sure something isn't hammer your hard drive or CPU.. otherwise, be patient, I expect they'll fix the problems eventually. If nothing else, they might have to pull a Mojang and hire people that know what they're doing with engine code after the game makes some money. I think they do have the talent on their team already though.

You have bigger problems than the game if you're getting performance that bad. I have almost identical hardware (Slightly less in fact) and I am getting a silky smooth 60FPS - With the Steam Overlay on at that.

That is AFTER the planet has spent a minute or so loading everything up - All clients are sluggish for the first few minutes or so. Even SSD users.

The game loads fairly quickly for me, but the rain and generated structures lag tons. I don't play with an FPS counter up, but I'm going to guess I get about 5 FPS in those situations.. Otherwise it runs fine.

I think optimization to those two aspects would be great for a lot of people, even if it is still early beta.

    Oh, and specs :
    AMD Anthlon 64 x2 Dual core 4600+ 2.40GHz
    4.00 GB RAM
32 bit Windows Vista Home Premium

My friend literally has the same exact laptop as I do, but his game runs perfectly smooth, while mine lags with rain and dungeons. I don't understand why.
