Hello, I'm pretty new to the forums, and for my first thread, I would just like to discuss an idea of mine I'd like to suggest for Starbound.
(sorry if there are previous threads discussing this topic, but I have not seen any if there are)

Imagine, you find a desolate wasteland planet, filled with horrible creatures and no resources. Then, instead of simply staying there and trying to survive, you could just pull out your own little Temporal Warper and travel back in time. You then find yourself on a previous version of the planet, lush with plants, creatures, and other things like resources for you to collect.

So this is basically my solution for time traveling in Starbound. I suppose you could could get the Temporal Warper, the hand held time machine, through some type of quest or something, as long as it's secretive. So feel free to post any of your ideas about this, or maybe how you could obtain the Temporal Warper, or anything really. I would love to have some feedback on this idea.

I think this might open the door to a lot more creative ideas (maybe too many), but I think you would find many flaws with the multiplayer aspects in particular. In the long run I think it would be more difficult than rewarding to include this in the game.

and that would be the main issue with that imo, imagine building some buildings in the past, travelling forward in time, and finding it has become overrun by aliens / partially destroyed / developed more...huge possibilities, looks hard to figure it out and make it work nice, even harder to put this in multiplayer

I also really enjoy this idea, but for as the same reasons above, it is probably too big to implement. Unfortunately it's a whole bunch of butterfly effect stuff.

However, if it were to be implemented, how long could you stay in the past? I realize that you'll have to travel forward in time in order to get off the planet, but what if a race is star-faring. You would never have to go back to the present day.

Mechanicly, I agree with those who ''spoke'' before me.
From a lore aspect, it works perfectly together with my FTL idea.
Generally I think it's good but it has some problems like the others said.

To solve some of the concerns perhaps this would only be possible at certain "Temporal Anomaly" locations. Then it is restricted to certain planets or quest events and the developers would have a significantly easier time programming this without things going crazy. You get to keep a cool feature that adds some interesting stuff to the game.

Perhaps a quest would be like,

Chef Boyard De Stouffer: "Oh wow! I just realized what would make this soup better! Bonbon Berry Weed! Of course, that plant is extinct... Hmmm... If only there was some way to go back in time and collect some of it. Oh! I know. Scientist McGilliganvichson just invented a Temporal Warp Bracelet! Maybe he would let you borrow it?"

Scientist McGilliganvichson: "Oh well you see the Temporal Warp Bracelet isn't quite done yet. I still need 3 tachyon particle accelerators and 7 pieces of twine to finish it. If you get me the supplies I need, I suppose I could let you borrow it, but you should know it only works in certain locations. There is a temporal anomaly just east of here you could use it at. That should work fine for your needs."

You get the idea. Then you go back in time to a small section of the world perhaps that is lush and rich and filled with terrifying dinosaur type aliens trying to kill you while you look for some BonBon Berry Weed or whatever.

while time travel is popular, it is also one massive headache. simply taking one plant from the plant could destroy an entire ecosystem or life on the planet.there is no way of knowing the effects time travel can have on the universe. Reality hopping, on the other hand, is fair game.

    I like the idea.

    we need more berryweed Hoddmimir!

to program it mightt be a bit of a challenge, but the gameplay as a whole would gain a dramatic amount of depth.

I could see how the mechanics for this might work via code, copy and paste the current world into a re-generator, destroy random blocks at a certain height, changing plant types, adding enemies, or more enemies, depleting certain resources when going forward, say turning an ocean planet into a desert planet.

Then for past, the world could just start saving older copies of the current every minute and it'd revert it to that time, prior to that, you could probably just backwards engineer the above, since it's all up to imagination as to what it was 1000 years ago. Desert planet -> Ocean planet? Haha.

A lot of good ideas hanging around the suggestions side of the forum.

    Support!

the only problem with that is that if you go back in time it would undo your work(or if playing with others, it would remove their work) so going forward through time to have plants grow and grass spread(like somnia mod)

"instead of simply staying there and trying to survive, you could just" blow up the planet and go to another one. There are infinite planets, so they are expendable and you don't need to worry about them.

i think it would be hard to do, like some others already said that if its implemented, only do it for certain areas and quests. mainly because time travel will create weird situations in multiplayer.

Not a bad idea... But if you went back in time wouldn't that erase the progress you've made on other planets? (Of course you could just go forward in time) :p

    I like the idea though.

i do like the idea. but i have an idea. say the planet that you were under went this transformation 5 days before you got there. and you back 6 days. would be able to try and stop this strange phenomenon
