It has already been stated that the player will be able to customize his player to look whatever way they want.
Like, it might be on one of the homepage articles, that one of the devs said that.

 

I wonder just how many different hairstyles this will have...

 

Hopefully there will be a mode where we can draw our own hair-styles, Akin to Animal Crossing's patterns. That's surely make the whole 'customize however you want' thing much more possible.

 

Maybe that's what the devs meant be it the whole time...
Eh, who knows, we'll figure it out sometime.
