Just to clarify. I was agreeing with you.

You seem to think that "MOAR CONTENT" just springs forth fully-formed from some magical realm. That tree? That bush? Those took hours to create. That set of armour? It took hours, if not days, to produce the assets, implement, balance, and test.

The crash was because the lack of content control. Many games were buggy as hell and quite a few stores refused to sell faulty products. Something which is no longer a problem aka stores have no issues selling you broken crap anymore.

Ohhh, I just thought of another pretty damn good game for this topic! Antichamber! It's like MC Escher had an affair with Portal. Very, VERY cool game. Everyone should give it a shot.

Trust me, I'm aware of the time and work it takes to produce stuff

And there's going to be loads more content once the game is finished

I like the sector system since it gives a clear indication of how dangerous a place will be by seperating the danger levels and I'm fine with having to go through bosses to continue. But I wouldn't bemoan bosses being optional instead of as gates either. If I only have tier 2 gear and can clearly see the area is tier 10 before entering I have no one to blame for my demise but myself. But then again I'm the kinda guy who gets cactus armor in terraria and mines just enough meteor for a pick so I can mine hellstone in my cactus simply because I bloody well can. Hell if I didn't need the meteor pick I'd just skip that too.

This entire thread is kind of moot since I think you could mod around the tier system if you want more of a open world sandbox experience. I know I do, so I'll wait for the game to release and someone else to make it. :D

This thread has gone completely off the rails. Not like it had any to begin with.

You realize even Terraria had a multi-tier system as well, right? At least when it came to hardmode and all that.

It doesn't feel much like progression now because people couldn't handle the old combat system because nobody wanted to take the time to experiment.

And speaking of experiment? Let the devs do so. They could bring back difficulties per planet. They could make progression feel more obvious - maybe when an actual storyline and quest system comes out, since both aren't implemented yet. But quit your bitching until things have settled down development wise.

it isn't necessary to go beyond that. overcomplication is horrible design.

It is relatively easy to make. I might make it later today.

If this is the case, how come innovative techniques from games past have been left behind?

Also this is an excuse. Saying that the reason no such innovation occurs is because no one can think of it is outright ludicrous. The real answer is that streamlined games are the ones that get funding now because they make the most money. Look to the side at some of the closest to innovation we get. They are almost all indie and the reason is that big game companies are not interested in taking risks.

Well, I mentioned Papers, Please which uses minimalist game design to create a real soul crushing simulation of living the life of a worker in a cold, heartless communist 'utopia.' There are multiple stories told with multiple endings all based upon player actions that could be as simple as refusing to allow someone with the proper passport entry.

Then there's Don't Starve which actually makes a game entirely based around survival. It's brutal and always keeps you on the knife's edge of hunger.

Civilization 5, especially Brave New World, fixes many of the issues that have long plagued the series. Stackzilla is finally deceased so combat feels fresher. Units don't die immediately upon losing a combat so a veteran army is possible. The culture game has gone from the weakest, slowest victory type to being an aggressive game based around tourism with scientific, military, and espionage benefits along the way. Civilizations actually have fundamental differences and unique advantages (Venice, for example, is unable to build settlers and only has one non-puppet city for the entire game). The late game sees a revolution (literally!) whereupon civilizations scramble to adapt an ideology (Democracy, Facism, and Communism) and world politics shift overnight based on choices. Religion is more important and makes for Mid-game fun as well as being fully customizable for a Civ's strengths.

Dwarf Fortress sets out to create the most beautiful of simulation games. Toadyone has made it his life's work and we're barely through the first decade of a thirty year project.

Those are just the games off the top of my head. Give me more time and I can give you more.

What are you talking about? "Innovative techniques from games past have been left behind" because they DON'T BLOODY WELL FIT OTHER GAMES or WERE NOT SUCCESSFUL.

There are loads of "innovative" titles that were garbage, just as there are loads of carbon-copies that are fantastic. You don't even have to look further than Castlevania or Metroid to see all of the extremes.

Examples given: cities. Eviath's note: already there. Conclusion: You do NOT KNOW what you mean by variety, thus cannot provide anything else, other than to suggest "something" is missing.

Every detail, no? It would be a start though. So far you have made 1: dungeon protection. It doesn't count in offering alternatives because guess what? It removes some. Maybe you could visit the suggestion subforum and peruse some fleshier ideas.

    Such as?

I wouldn't count "Dungeon Protection" as a suggestion, since it is already a guaranteed feature that has been previously discussed to death!

If that's the case then it's not a point in pete's favor.

Oh let me just toss a quick idea for emphasis:

New dungeon type: Thermal Borehole Power Facility
Population: Armed Security, Energy Production Personnel
Contents: High-Tech block types in the theme of Deep-Mining Stability, High-Grade fuel ores and other energy-related items (energy-buff armor, energy stims), weapons for the security personnel, food for all staff, workspace furniture, surveillance equipment, elaborate gate designs, elevator shafts, etc
What isn't there: excess pixels, non-fuel ores, luxury items, unprotected chests, shops, exotic building materials, etc
Extent: Reaches from the surface of the planet to the bottom lava layer
Where found: a planet with plentiful rock formations and minimal biosphere
Other Hazards: Excess Heat, Radiation, Heavily Polluted Air

But those are two successful game series that only failed when they left behind their chief principles...

Also chivalry would benefit greatly from die by the sword's limb damage mechanic, yet it is a generic arcade beat em up.

By that logic, call the game done, skip all 3 phases of beta, and just have the loader say "If you don't like it, mod it."

I'm not even sure why there is such linear progression in a game like this. Is a week of linear progression to end up with 1 useful armor set and 9 worthless armor sets better than 10 different but equal armor sets and only gameplay to focus on? I guess if linear progression is your thing then some Aion or Tera type system might make sense (as in it takes forever to advance)... but when you progress so quickly in a game like this you just quickly end up with a surplus of obsolete content. If you can't play a game like this primarily for its gameplay then you're not going to be here very long anyway.
