Tier system has got to go!!!

Every popular mining game has some form of progression system.

With Minecraft it is built into the pickaxes. Its fairly simplistic, but still there.
Terraria has it a little more complex but same idea, with a few boss gates too.

The only difference here is you can't go anywhere in the world right off the bat. That is the only unsandboxy thing about the game. HOWEVER.. the game was supposed to be different then the others by having a story within a sandbox. That is its major selling point and tagline. We'll have to see how it shapes up but right now I get the feeling the gated system in only a placeholder. We'll have a more storybased one eventually, with the sectioning probably gone and the map open completely from the start.

    I could be wrong tho.

A ) Are you Iceciro? No.
B ) Did you just say there was NO game experience throughout tiers 1-9? I don't think you did.

Now as to your response. What's preventing you from doing those sandboxxy things on the planets you do have access to before tier 10, and what specifically are you missing from the locked planets that prevent you from doing those sandboxxy things? Additionally, what other 'sandbox' games have you played and how have they given you fuller access compared to Starbound (I'd maintain that neither Minecraft nor Terraria make good comparisons because both of them do have significant gating of some kind).

On the contrary, I did enjoy it. In Tier one. Then I hit tier two, and everything I did in T1, except the act of getting to tier 2, was worthless. So why not go right to tier 10, and then do the exploration, building, etc at the tier where the next step isn't going to make all of my gear not just a little obsolete, but irrelevant?

I disagree about minecraft and terraria. They have specific areas and tasks that you need specific actions to access. That's not the case in Starbound. In starbound, the linear progression is cut into equal 10ths, with only one way to go about getting to the next 10th. And sorry--I didn't know that your conversation was so private, on this public forum.

I get that, and it's a good point. But the difference between MC and Terraria's sandboxes is that their progressions aren't linear. You pick what you want to do, how you want to do it, and when you want to get it done. There is a vague order that is presupposed, but there isn't a direct, linear one that is mechanically enforced.

But we don't want another freaking Terraria clone. We want a freeroam survival sci-fi space travel sandbox without endless ore grind.

This really doesn't sound like Terraria. As developers, we’ve been inspired by all the games we grew up playing. From isometric 80s classics to Castlevania, Zelda, Metroid. Celebrated platformers like Mario and Sonic, RPGs such as Elder Scrolls and Ultima, and iconic handheld games such as Pokemon. Where is the Terraria reference?
Guess I have been disinformed by Devs themselves. Not a word about spending most of the time underground. It should have been called Cavebound then. Guess even the name of the game is misleading.

Oh come on. Be self-aware for one second. You just said "no game experience." Don't insult my intelligence by lying to my face. You can't have enjoyed tier 1 without there being a game experience there to have enjoyed.

If you don't want gear to obsolete, that's an easy fix- Remove gear progression.

It wasn't that private, but Iceciro said something that does not necessarily apply to you. Your direct quote of my post assumed I was saying the same thing to you.

It apparently is the case in Starbound. There's a specific requirement to enter the dungeon in Terraria. You have to build a gate to warp to hell in Minecraft. So on and so forth.

Dwarf Fortress- Resource Collection- particularly spirits.
Don't Starve- Experience to Unlock Characters
    Animal Crossing- Fossil Identification

    Next?

The difference is a matter of degrees--that's absolutely true. There are specific regions you can't reach until you perform specific events in Terraria and MC. So there are some limitations on progression. But that's a heck of a lot different than Starbound. Starbound has 10 very-specific tiers that directly limit progression to different tenths of the accessible world. It's completely linear, completely static, and isn't a case of "Well, trigger this event when you want and go do this other thing." It's "grind your way to this tenth. Now grind your way to that tenth. Now grind your way to that tenth..." And that's a world apart in degrees, between "take two and a half minutes to finally go mine some obsidian."

The planets are very similar in structure though, so as I asked you before, what specifically are you "missing" that you do not have access to already? Dirt that changes colors depending on time of day, maybe?

This is a complaint about the methods used to pass through the gate and the time taken to pass through them. It's not a general opposition to gates in a somewhat open-ended game. The suggested solutions would then be: Multiple ways to pass gates, and less time to do so, although what you seem to be asking for is a skip progression button that warps you from A to B with no journey in between.

    So?
There's a first time for everything ;). (The relative difficulty of monsters in a tier would, in theory, be tuned more tightly at higher tiers because it can be expected that the player is more proficient with the game's combat mechanics than in earlier tiers. There's also the difficulty shift between tiers.)

So if we removed tiers 2-10, revamped tier 1, and flattened the difficulty curve, you'd be happy?

I said there is no game experience at level 1 I couldn't experience at level 10. Hence, the pointlessness of the other nine tiers, when they're just a work up to ten, where your gear stops obsoleting. That I can have the same enjoyable experience at ten, more enjoyably, than at 1. Thus, 1-9 are pointless.

Reading comprehension is a valuable skill.

well you wont get it :D

4people doesnt warrant a huge change.

EDIT: iceciro, oh the game content is lacking soooooooo much so no wonder thereis nothing in tier 10, i dont even know if there is tier 10 armor but there is sword, so no.

    too incomplete to judge.

The tier system is entirely placeholder for beta, the final system is not remotely close to it
