"Thump" as you enter hyperspace.

I was reading today's daily update and read something that troubled me. When Tiy said that there was a noise upon entering hyperspace, I was kind of disappointed. Sound waves don't travel in a vacuum, therefore there is no sound in space, and there should not be one upon reaching FTL speeds. I don't expect them to change it, but I am sort of irked by this. It isn't a game-breaker, however it is mildly annoying.

I understand that they do this in movies and such, but Star Trek and Star-Wars lied to you. Such a thing would not happen in actuality.

"In space, nobody can hear you scream."

PLUS, the reason they deepen in pitch is because of the Doppler Effect; sound deepens if the source moves away from you or if you move away from it. However, as you are ON the ship, that wouldn't happen, it'd be more of just a single frequency noise.

If you're hearing it from inside the ship, there could easily be a noise that the engine produces from the compression of the swiff-beams into solaron energy five.

Dude, it's science-fiction. This is where the willing suspension of disbelief is supposed to kick in.

What he said. Even though you're in space, you're still on-board the ship, so You will still hear the noise, at least. It may not be as deep of a pitch as the movie like you stated, but it's still something (And something quite enjoyable).

I guess maybe the noise of turning it up to 11 could make a sound inside the cabin. BUT, the ship is obviously air-tight, as it has to be to keep the air inside from being violently ripped out. So it's essentially soundproof, even if there WAS sound outside. And because there aren't any atoms to be vibrated, there is no noise outside. Because the engine is outside, there would be no sound, and because there is no sound, resonance is out of the question, so the cabin would be silent as well...

I liked the explanation in Wing Commander - that the ions from things around the ship caused reverberations that could be sensed as sound. Kinda like the "sound of the big bang" that's been circulating lately.

Anyway, the ENGINE is attached to the ship, and the ship itself could reverberate like a bell... so yeah, it could certainly cause a sound inside the compartment.

They may have lied about that, but the rest of the movies are pretty factual. I've learned everything that I know about the world from science fiction movies.

Sound is actually transmitted better through most solid matter than it is through air. Airtight does not have anything to do with soundproof.

Considering the ships are relatively small, and gain multiple engines as it scales up.. vibration could travel inside the ship as could some sound.
Edit:Couple post beat me to it while typing. Huh.

That said, its light and silly sci-fi ala original Trek or Dr.Who.. not Deadspace no sound in certain sections sort of scifi.
Also consider it fortunate(or unfortunate) the spaceships won't travel with the emergency break on.

It's not transmitted better, it moves faster through denser materials, there is a difference. Also, the engine is outside the ship. Where would any potential vibrations come from? If you were in a car in space, and the CABIN was airtight, so, separated from the engine compartment, and the engine was turned on, you wouldn't hear it. The car may vibrate slightly, but no audible sound would be produced, because resonance can't occur if there are no outside molecules to force the car to vibrate.

dude, this is a light-hearted science-fiction game, who cares if the hyperspace thing has sound.
in fact, in many media, sound effect where they shouldnt be are still added at the cost of some reality to enhance the feeling of the moment, just like when in starbound, when you go into FTL, its meant to be something special. youre cruising the damn galaxy

Wait, what? The engine is INSIDE. The THRUSTERS are outside. Any sound the engine might make as a result of the solaron energy released by the bi-atomic whatever would totally be heard inside.

[superpedantic]The thrusters aren't outside either, technically. My hand isn't outside of my body.[/superpedantic]

This kind of thing is done routinely in sci fi etc to make things more dramatic and exciting. We aren't playing a space simulator when we play Starbound. We are getting an epic adventure that plays with science and reality and adds a dash of fantasy to make the mundane exciting and the impossible possible. Many times reality lacks FUN. Imagine those massive space battles in Star Wars Return of the Jedi. If they had strictly adhered to reality, they would have been silent. That's not fun or exciting. So be willing to let go of enough of what would be REAL to let Starbound be FUN and dramatic and limitless. :)

Maybe the noise is heard inside the ship.

Except that the noise comes from the Ships engines and you're inside the ship. If you were watching the ship from outside of it, then it wouldn't make sense.

Firefly had silent space and was still awesome. I don't think it made stuff less "dramatic" or "exciting". But then again, I don't really care. :)
