Thread for discussing Bartwe's departure from Starbound

Succeeding in business also takes a great deal of luck. Probably more that than "entrepreneurial spirit", considering most entrepreneurs-- including the good ones-- fail more businesses than they succeed.

 

I don't really have a theory, not one that I've posited anyway. I'm just telling folks to make of that information what they will. If they think it means nothing, so be it. That could absolutely be the case.

I certainly doesn't guarantee they would promote his game, but it certainly means that he has an advantage over the general public. One would think a rather large advantage. So either they don't want to promote/publish his game, or he doesn't want them to.

I don't think I've brought this up over and over. I've responded to responses of my initial post, but I've hardly spammed the boards with it.

 

Talking without any inside information, but having talked to bart, the situation does seem cut and dry. As to the whole CF not promoting his game I see two potential factors in play. 1) He's specifically asked not to so he doesn't seem to be riding coattails, which comes back to the whole personal choice of privacy thing we discussed before in regards to the new hirings and/or 2) What was the response here last time Molly mentioned a non-starbound game? You think bart wants that sort of welcome to the world of solo game creation? I know I wouldn't personally.

 

I wish him the best luck, but i still think there might be actual reasons behind leaving a 1M developer which is promoting his game on Steam and it's working at breakneck speed on updates. Especially if you end up solo-programming a game about flowers with the abused voxel-look. Still, best of luck to him and his next projects.

 

I don't really think Kickstarter was a gaming industry ploy. Though it was more started to help people publish their niche Civil War romance novels or their bands debut jazz/country fusion album. I just don't think the gaming industry is the one that discovered crowdfunding. Not to say they don't use it or that some people don't abuse it.

 

Confirmed: CF producing next Dixie Dregs album.

Not a big fan of country, but love a guy like Steve Morris who'll screw around with it just because the pickin' is a showcase for his mad skillz.

 

The more cut-and-dry a situation seems, the more likely it is really the result of a vast conspiracy. How can we be completely sure Bartwe wasn't abducted by lizard-people from the future and secretly replaced with a robot?

 

He said on twitch and elsewhere that he couldn't move to England, but not doing so kind of defeated the purpose of the new office if he stayed on the team. He kind of had to find new employment at that point, which was a shame, but it happens.

Gaming has had preorders long before those things happened though. Kickstarter and early access just altered a few key elements of it.

Either way, a developer can abuse this model only once, then their reputation is ruined.
