You considered the corruption hard? I considered it an annoyance, nothing more. But a persistent one.

I've been roaming hell and switching to hardmode on fresh characters in Terraria, that was fun. Having most of my constructions and gardens be destroyed by that pathetic spreading junk was not hard, it was infuriating.

I can do hard, I like hard as long as it's not the cheap kind. I don't like having something out of my control take over/destroy my constructions, or planets/biomes/environments/etc. that I find pleasing.

If it's a purely story-related element along the lines of "meet on your journey on specific planets, discover it's nature, and ultimately wipe it off the face of the galaxy" then I'm game, I like it. If it's an infestation that basically acts like a cheap artificial "hard mode" (and more to the point a time-limit), then I want to commit bodily harm to someone. I hate time limits in my sandbox.

But let's say that in starbound you can permanently get rid of the tentacles in a particular planet, i think with that could be more fun..

Earth... You fear to go to that planet. The humans delved too greedily and too deep. You know what they awoke in the darkness of the core... shadow and flame.

I think it was a little short, but they probably just shown us a small portion of the intro to not spoiler everything.
Anyway i think Logan Cunningham, the narrator of bastion, fits kinda cool in it.
It would be cool to see videos like that when you progress in the story of the game so you only see small bits and bops around and not the whole story, will also keep people on playing it through once because you wanna see how the story unfolds.

I could listen to Logan Cunningham all day.

The intro does seem to a little short to me though. Tiy did state it is a Work in Progress, so they may get a little longer as they go on.

I thought that Earth was destroyed by an unknown enemy, not a natural disaster.

The tentacles hardly strike me as a natural disaster.

I would not mind fighting the tentacles, this may sound weird to some people but I liked fighting the corruption back in Terraria, it gave me a larger goal then just build crap or mine through the tiers. On a side note I am kinda surprised that they got Logan in the first place, I remember there being a thread talking about this a while back just didn't know the Chucklefish got to use his voice for the game.

I didn't really like it. :/ If it's really the voice of the narrator from Bastion, he can do way better than that, and the intro is very rough obviously. And of course it's not official yet, it's a WIP. But I felt that it could use a lot of work. And giant tentacles taking over Earth...I feel it's a weak start. The thing that attacks the planet could be a little more interesting and realistic.

Sunflowers are not hard. Place one or two at both ends of corruption and bam your done.

    Sigh.

    Doesn't work in hardmode.

Vertical and horizontal 3-block empty tunnels, adorned by stone brick walls from both sides (so 1+3+1=5 blocks) do. But it is long and boring work to build these.

I have a feeling the tentacles are related to the story itself. Tiy mentioned on someone's comment about the lack of details on the human intro that we're suppose to discover more information about the tentacle attack on Earth through the game. I would be surprised (but impressed) if each race has it's own story line, but if they do share the same general story, than the tentacle is probably going to be some big boss (my bet is the final boss of the story).

That said, I don't think there will be corruption esque mechanics because, as a lot of people mentioned, it was kind of annoying in Terraria and Chucklefish doesn't seem like the group that would repeat that mistake. Plus, the tentacles are its' own biome, and I doubt we'll have a planet just change biomes, so there'll probably be only tentacle planets and it'll work just like any biome, generation wise.

I originally thought that earth was completely destroyed, by the Deathstar or something. This changes every thing.

It's time to start my scribble.
The Intro gives us a story of increasing, similar to an Octopus that suddenly destroys the settlement of people and land in General. From the beginning, in the era of modern technologies and FTL engines people not turned their attention to that below the level of the soil grows them something capable of destroying the entire planet. It seems silly, but one game was so incomplete storyline and players somehow do not complain.
Referring to the old screen where we can see the planet filled with tentacles do I conclude that it was the Galactic plague, time after time killing the planet. And here comes a thread of cooperation.
Other civilizations are also attacked. This reminds me of Mass Effect 3, but I'd like to see at the end of the story a great fight throughout the joint forces of the Galaxy with a central body. Ahh ... too much Mass Effect. :)

    Voyager Spaceman Spiff

I think that there are two ways of looking at the intro:
    1. literally i.e. there is a tentacle scourge
    2. metaphorically, humans did bad things and that lead to more bad things

I like the second way because you can make up your own story that suits your needs. It also keeps you from wondering why the intro was so short.
I don't think we need an introduction to this game as long as for Fallout 2 for example. I don't think Tiy would want to top some of the greatest intros ever made either. You could spend six months or more just on an intro movie and I think that it would not improve upon the game playing experience. FTL didn't have an intro and I love that game.

  20. MEWMEW

    MEWMEW Existential Complex

I would of liked it to stick with the theme of the protagonist being an outcast, like, the greed of the humans grew and grew until eventually their home planet was gone, but still they hungered for more, spreading throughout the galaxy, harvesting everything in their way to fuel their ever expanding empire.
