Thoughts on food

I was wondering about everyone's thoughts on the cooking and farming systems. Currently a Hylotl and have gotten lucky and found sugar pineapples and rice for cooking but still missing chili and reef pod to make some more things. to bad chili takes 2 hours to grow so when I finally have some seeds its going to take forever to farm. This feels really unfair when apex can make banana bred really quick with there starting seeds.

Yea to just not starve is really easy but if you want to even cool some of the races starter foods is really hard to do. I just found a floran selling chilli and bought a ton because I know if I ever find the seeds they take 2 hours to grow. it feels like apex get god mode with banana bread you can probably make a few every 15 mins if you keep a running farm.

I wish I knew some cool recipes. The only useful recipe I know is burger (2 bread plus raw alien meat) which restores (all?) health (for humans at least)
My farms are now always filled with wheat for the bread. :)

I wish food was more race specific. From the descriptions I saw before, some foods were meant to be toxic to anyone but a particular race. That was cool, but they must've decided it was un-cool.

Well you can find more recipes around although i think they are rare. But at least you have a recipe spy that's not luck based all i could make as a Hylotl was bread to start.

I think that's one thing that will be added later. i was surprised when my Hylotl had no problem eating meat they are supposed to be vegetarians.

I hope they modify growing time soon, so I don't have to keep them modified myself. Chili, for example, takes 94 to 98mins to grow. Yikes.

I got lucky on my latest avian and found 3 carrot seeds in a chest, so now I make tons of carrot bread. Full hunger, great health regen for 30 seconds, plus run speed buff for 15 seconds. Om nom nom!

However, I modified carrots to grow at the same speed as wheat, because while wheat takes 12min average, carrots were 48mins. Uuuugh. I'd actually be somewhat okay with that kind of growth time if I had ever found a seed vendor instead of produce vendor, so I could farm in massive quantities.

Yeah, I hope they can go into detail later. A robot eating steak and potatos just isn't... robotic. I can just play a human and do that.

Every race needs to start with ingredients that can be used to make food that fills up your hunger bar and gives you some healing, like how Apex have banana bread, Humans have burgers, and Floren have Meat n' Marrow. As far as I can tell with Glitch and Hylatl you have to get really lucky and find multiple seeds for most of your starter meals which puts them at a disadvantage. Avians just need to start out with carrots so that they can make carrot bread but carrots also take a long time to grow, approximately 4 wheat growth cycles per carrot.

Hunger system is just plain annoying, as long as you find one village, you will never be hungry ever again.
You just spend 100 pixels and stack up on steaks to last you 'till next year.

First finally found a chili plant after searching most of the day. Second you don't even have to buy anything monsters drop meat often enough to survive on mixed with anything you find randomly. if you find a eye tree biome your set just chopping wood.

I wouldn't mind if you always could get at minimum 2 "fruit" from plants and then had to convert plants into seeds. And the times to grow some plants need to be adjusted -45 minutes or more for a good number of the plants doesn't seem reasonable. Maybe a tick to say how many "game days" it was planted?

I love the idea of gardening and cooking, but in practice it has some problems, the biggest one is that crops stop growing if you don't babysit them, which makes some of the crops like Chili or Currentcorn annoying an impractical to grow. I would be fine with them even increasing the grow time for all crops IF they allowed plants to grow while you were away from them. Without that, some crops are just pointless to grow right now and should have their grow time halved at least if they can't implement them growing while you are away. I also wish that there was more variety in buffs. Right now you basically have 3 levels of food: fills hunger to varying degrees and that's it, fills hunger plus a small amount of healing, or fills hunger plus a massive regen and speed buff. Once you find one recipe + ingredients for one of the regen/speed buff foods, (preferably a recipe that does not involve a plant with long grow times) you may as well just make that forever and forget everything else, there's no incentive to make a variety of foods. What about some different buffs attached to foods to encourage you to find more recipes?

I don't like it as a starve mechanic as the game actively makes sure you have more food than you'll ever really need. I don't care for mechanics in a game that the game is going to actively make sure aren't bothering me; why have them there if they aren't really doing anything except giving me a pop-up every couple of minutes?

I would have had it so that food only gave beneficial effects (health regen, faster movement, etc), with better or multiple effects being available for higher level or more difficult recipes. This way food has a point and isn't simply a pop-up that I disregard.

Well, of course. I'd just like it to be something more mechanical. If I wind up doing the same things that a human does then I'll just play human.

If I'm not mistaken, the pineapple upside crown cake makes you glow for lighting like yellow stims? May just be a run buff like the carrot cake (health regen, run, and full hunger). Sadly I forget and can't test it on my current guys. :(

I think over all basic foods need to be nerfed, so it will encourage people to do more crafting foods; as it stands I live off kiwis and never bother to try and craft anything food-wise it takes too much effort and the kiwi fills a lot and grows uber fast on my ship; as do a lot of plants if you find the right ones.

Well only half the races have an easy time making powerful food. The apex are king at this with banana bread. anyone else has to hunt for who knows how long to find someone to buy the ingredients from or to find a chest or planet with the seeds. ether apex need there bread nerfed or the other races need to be able to start cooking more reliably.
