I have noticed that, after some mining, the cores if most planets are filling with lava. My theoretical/possible question is, if you dug a four block tunnel from one side if the planet, and dug straight to the other side, and jumped into the tunnel, what would happen? This is assuming it has a core of lava and the lava has been blocked off from the tunnel. If there is another reason why it is impossible to dig the tunnel please share.

Sorry if this has been done before.

There is no vertical wrapping due to the engine capabilities

If only mods could be made that could copy a world at the time of generation and create a mirriored portion. Then you would need a small transitional screen where gravity at one point flips.. or if you swim through lava via a mod suit.. it automatically transitions (loading screen like when in warp to other planets) and then places your character x amounts of blocks up in the mirrored copy.

It would be like two sides of a floppy disk, but could be a way of getting around engine limitations. Edit: Then you could always impose unique values on those mirrored copies like inverting them and gravity. Give it a spin as you adjust to working completely upside down. Would work best for moons and things.. rather then a dark side you have an inverted. For planets rather then inverting you could have it perhaps regenerate additional (diffrent) microbiomes then the previous? You've a extra "side" to work with and could go wild altering values for, so the possibilities after transition would open up.

Sadly, if it was mirrored gravity would end up making you float eternally in the middle of the tunnel.

The world is rectangular or square really with left/right wrapping. There is no difference in length of the world at core level and length of the surface (obviously in a circle, the as you decrease in depth, the radius decreases and the smaller the circumference you have to cover.

Best way to probably visualise it then is that the 'core' is simply the bottom of the lithosphere

Gravity has killed me more times than I can count. I don't like gravity, it seems to just... pull me in.

Well, if you dug a tunnel all of the way through a planet and jumped into it, you would never reach the 'other side' anyway. Due to the rotation speed, it would curve and hid one of the tunnel walls
Alternatively, you could dig a tunnel from the North pole to the South pole, but you would be going so fast that you would burn up like a meteor.
But, if you were to manage to dig a hole North pole to South pole, and suck out all of the air. You could theoretically jump into one side, and keep on accelerating until you reach the core, where you would begin to slow down. And then you would continue to slow down until you reach the other side of the planet, virtually unscathed (well, that is if you get all of these conditions perfect).

But, I would never expect any of these physics to be put into the game of course.

Wow. I want to be a space spelunker too.

Edit: anyways, I've tried digging through the lava at the core, but havent been able to go completely through. Probably just an invisible wall at the bottom. Speaking of lava, being that close to lava should melt your face. Unless you have a really resiliant face, that is. And shouldn't you, being to close to the super dense core, be crushed instantly into little space adventurer bits due to gravity?
