We should not be trying to flame or get angry here. Let's just discuss our opinions without getting mad at one another. This thread was never intended to be a rant/flame.

I'm going to be cleaning up a lot of posts here. I literally just got done saying how glad I was this thread hasn't evolved into a flame war, and now I'm disappointed at the path it's going. So let's keep it civil, keep it on topic, and stop with anything that even looks like an insult.

People are naturally going to disagree with what this post yields, however I honestly think that those who do support an Open Beta are in fact being the slightest bit selfish, which is understandable because we ALL want to play the game. We should however, not be supporting one side due to our own wants. Those who support Open Beta due to "wanting to help game development" should consider switching their view over to supporting Closed Beta. A Closed Beta expanded to a wider audience of hand picked individuals by the development team would do what the original supporting argument was, which would be aid game development, however closing off the Beta would prevent all the negativity that I, and those who agreed with me, had been talking about throughout this thread.

There's nothing selfish about wanting to do more to help the game. Yes, you could get enjoyment out of it, but that's not selfish. I get enjoyment out of giving people xmas presents, but that doesn't make selfishness the motivation for doing so.

I personally think the devs need to do whatever they feel is best to make a great game. Beta's have had a very negative impact on some games, and in others it was useful. Either way, the dev's should certainly not feel compelled to do one just because some kids on the forum are asking for it.

As for release dates, it's just simply the nature of development that even devs themselves find it very hard to give any specific time. When blizzard for example says "we will release it when it's done" they really mean that, they just don't know.

Well, if you read the rest of my post. I suggest a good median between actually doing something to help the game (Closed Beta), without actually allowing the negative effects of an Open Beta.

Blizzard is probably a bad example, waht with them being able to mint money in the form of WoW subscriptions.

Yes. I like this point a lot. That was part of my reason for this thread. The devs shouldn't do something just because a surplus of the community asks for it.

A closed beta would have the same negative effects as an open one.

    Not. At. All.

If the developers hand-pick who they allow in the Beta, then they can make sure they pick people who will be honest and trustworthy while playing they beta. They can pick people that they know will honor the NDAs and will understand that a Beta is a Beta and not the finished product, they can report bugs to the staff and all of this can be done in private with the developers to help flush out bugs.

as long as there is a beta i guess it doesnt really matter.

imagine if there wasnt, the game would have more bugs than skyrim, fallout 3, fallout new vegas and dishonoured
    combined.

If there were so few people in the beta that they could all be trusted not to break the NDA, then there wouldn't be enough people in the beta to find the bugs necessary to justify the beta. Hell, even with so few people, there will always be someone that breaks the NDA.

In my opinion, with dedicated beta testers you would find out most of the ugliest (game-breaking) bugs. Maybe, it would take more time, if they were really few, but still.

EDIT: And by "dedicated" I mean people that actually are beta-testers, that consciously play the game to find the bugs and not just to play and do a little helping on the side.
