  1. I do not support a fully open Beta, but I do not believe this statement to be true. I'm certain that there are people out there who support an open Beta and would like to help with the game the best they can.

As I've stated in some other topic, I'd much rather a Beta for trustworthy community members, such as moderators, who would then post progress and such here in the forum, where everyone together could debate gameplay, offer suggestions and so forth.

The reason for this is that the purpose of a Beta incorporates testing how certain things act and finding out bugs. As such, I believe a mature and honest group would be more reliable and helpful than putting the game out there to everyone. This would eventually culminate into an excellent Starbound, which could then be sold to the community. Ah, and the updates that will follow are certainly very satisfying already. :)

    This statement hurts my Mind
i never seen an open beta gone wrong
pre beta to people who preorder is a good thing, infact it helps sales
take a game like overgrowth for example (not linking it cus its agence the rules *go google it*)
another game that did the same thing
    Minecraft
and see how that game turned out

While I agree with the way you see things, I still think a open beta would bring a bigger light to Starbound.

And what I ignore by having this perspective is the young group of people, not every young person, but those that could turn out to be more annoying when complaining about things in general. And I know that there are also older people that would act the same way, so don't think this is all about young people. The reason why I choose to ignore this is because that's a minor issue compared to the light in the end of the tunnel by having a open beta, instead of a closed beta.

In the way I see it, a open beta is just a lot more open, a lot more fun. A lot more shared. More people would help with finding bugs, which is a good thing. Not every person would even be able to find a bug, that's for sure. But there would be less bugs to worry about in a shorter period of time, which is also good.

I'm sure that if Starbound went open beta, people would eagerly post gameplay videos on YouTube as well. And I'm sure that wouldn't be a big issue, because if Starbound goes open beta I'm sure the devs would already polish the game enough in such a way that if anyone chose to upload gameplay videos on YouTube, it would only draw more people towards Starbound. I think it would only make Starbound more popular.

Yeah... That's about all I have to say for now.

I'm still agreeing that it's because they want to play the game... If they wanted to help the best they could right now, they would own a copy of wanderlust, and think that the beta wouldn't have to be, because you can support the game by just pre-ordering.

I can't stand to hear the "we want a beta" statement anymore, because the people who say that just wanna play, and not help. The people that support the game don't choose a side whether or not a beta should come (they can have an opinion ofc), because ultimately thats their opinion about playing the game before release, and not about the game itself.

I will, however support starbound in anyway i can. Whether it means beta or no beta. I don't think i'll be playing it, but i am not going to rage about it... :)

    *Cough*

I do own a copy of Wanderlust, not only to support Starbound, but also because it looked like a fun game. I would help find bugs for Starbound any day if I could. So I can say for sure that not everyone wants the beta just to play the game. Even though I'm sure there are many who would.

I still stand by my opinion, I think a open beta would be the best choice, instead of a closed beta.

I'm not trying to change your ways of seeing things though, but I do feel offended when you straight out assume that everyone just wants to play the game. Even though ultimately that would be the case for everyone. To play the game to have fun.

Yeah, by open beta I was referring to "public beta"... And also the pre-order (beta) idea...

Tiy said a pre order might include access to the beta version of the game, when it's done. His words indicated nothing of an open beta test for the game. Something for all of you to keep in mind when you get into this debate: the difference between a beta version of software and an actual test of it. They seem to be toying with the idea of releasing it as a beta version when the sandbox is done, pre story, available with a pre-order. The story aspect of the game that would come later would then be the "release version". Yes, there are pros and cons to doing this, but that's up to the developers to decide. Ultimately, they're going to do whatever they feel is best for them and promoting their game, the rest of us will just have to deal with it.

  9. If you'll allow me,

"A closed beta test has a limited number of spots open for testing, while an open beta has either an unlimited number of spots (i.e. anyone who wants to can participate) or a very large number of spots in cases where opening it up to everyone is impractical."

    From http://webtrends.about.com/od/glossary/g/beta_define.htm

That's what I refer to when I talk about an open Beta - Not that it's free, but that its access is unlimited (only may be limited by a certain amount of cash at times).

Yes, by open beta I basically meant that the beta you get from pre-ordering would be given to anyone that preorders, and not only to a specific group of people.

So that's what I've been on about. I will pre-order anyways, but I think that if there is a beta included then it would be best to let everyone which pre-orders have access to that beta version. That's my point in general.

Still,If you preorder the game and get the sandbox in reward I'd not call it a beta.

Tell that to the Don't Starve people, whom are already on steam and call their game a beta and it's a pre-purchase. And the game itself at the moment is nothing but a sandbox.

And i don't see it as greedy to want the game to release early. I am sure the developers love the enthusiasm of the playerbase and know that impatience comes naturally in these matters. In the end ill be satisified with whichever option the developers choose as long as the END product is quality.

Chucklefish isn't under any pressure. They do not feel the "need" to release an open beta, they WANT to release an open beta. They want to hear the feedback from the people who will be buying and playing their game. And where do you get off calling many people of the Starbound base selfish, solely on the idea that they want an open beta? Surely you want the game as bad as everybody else, but there is a lot of people who would certainly take a rough copy of the game before it was polished up and ready to go.

The game completely changed it's laws and directions. You obviously must be new to Minecraft if you can't see it. The game back in INDEV when I played it was a mere survival game where the joy was found in figuring things our and being an adventurer. Due to community demands however, they began switching the game over to more of an RPG setting. No, this game is not Minecraft and no, this community had nothing wrong with it, but there is nothing wrong with us trying to prevent it from becoming that. So yes, I'll continue making that statement until it's point has been seen.
