So i just read the new info on the upcoming patch from tiy, and he mentions ''This update will probably require a character reset (I’m sorry! Beta :( )'' i hope not, if that is at all avoidable i would be very happy, spent so much tme in the game and would be terrible to se it all go away?! :p

There will be a reset sooner or later. That's what happens in a beta.

I hop hope it's just character data, so we can store all our items in the ship

Chances are since character information is pretty basic just some color data, race data, and a name it's highly unlikely that there will be any change that breaks character compatibility. It's much more likely to be a change in the map data or item data in which case those things would make it incompatible. Odds are you'll be losing it all a number of times over the beta so best not to get attached. Or just cheat to get the items back or similar ones.

you realize that ships are tied to characters right? If there was somehow a situation where characters are being wiped, but worlds aren't, then you'd want to create a stash on some world and note down the coordinates.

yes that would be awesome, so that we dont loose all our gear that we spent 20 hours collecting, but i guess this is what happens in beta, :p

What exactly do you mean by CHEAT my way up again?

When you're changing how data in a game is formatted, you have a couple options to avoid bugs from obsolete data:
    1) Wipe all outdated/incompatible data to ensure it doesn't break the new system.
    2) Spend time designing/developing/testing code that converts old data to new data.
Going with option 1 stinks for players attached to their characters. Option 2 stinks for everyone, because it takes time away from developing the game and runs the risk of creating more bugs. That's why the beta release came with a warning that characters might get wiped; it's the lesser of two evils, so to speak.

While i'm sure Tiyuri and the other developers are pleased to see that players are getting so attached to their characters and the progress being made on them, they did specifically state in an announcement on the main Starbound page NOT to get attached to your characters due to the possibility of save games disappearing, character resets and other circumstance that would result in progress being lost. We can only hope that there's a way around it but i would rather get to enjoy the game early, have some form of influence upon the direction of the tweaking/reworking process that goes into the beta stage and lose my character if need be than have a buggy, unbalanced mess of a game upon official release. Sacrifices need to be made. :D

We all knew full and well not to get attached to our characters.
    It was stated several times.

I don't really have a problem with a character reset myself, although I do wish I had read about that part of the upcoming update before I went and stole that entire small research center. :p

Maybe I'll work on some custom vanity stuff while I wait.

Why the heck are you playing in beta if you are not aware of the possible consequences? BETA != FINAL GAME. If you are not ready for possible character loss/item loss/stuff that changes, please play when the game is finished.

These whines could go to /dev/null please.

Stage 1 will be move at a breakneck speed. This will be the buggiest and busiest stage of the beta. A bunch of unfinished features will be disabled whilst we finish them up. Updates will come thick and fast, sometimes as often as multiple updates a day.

If you choose to take part during stage 1 you should expect bugs, lots of balance changes, you shouldn’t get too attached to your character or universe as we may make changes that require you to start from scratch. You should expect the game to be broken at points as we make sweeping changes but you’ll get to enjoy exciting new content added constantly. The engine won’t optimized during this stage of the beta so performance could be poor on some low end machines.

You’ll get to see a bunch of ‘behind the scenes’ content at this stage and provide feedback during this crucial period.

DO take part in this stage if:

    - You enjoy testing buggy and unfinished code

    - You enjoy providing feedback

    - You want to leave your mark on the game

    - You just can’t wait any longer

DO NOT take part in this stage if:

    - Bugs infuriate you

    - You don’t like spoilers

    - You can’t stand losing your save

    - You want the full Starbound ‘experience’ the first time you play.

The problem with this damn game is that it's so polished that you barely even notice that it's still a beta so when something pops up to remind us that the game is still in beta (such as this wipe) it makes you feel like a dummy because you got lured into a false sense of security... Damn you Chucklefish for making a good game >.<

Yep, 'xactly. Amazes me the number of people who don't seem to understand this. I can't believe that they simply didn't read it, since it's posted like literally everywhere.
I'm wondering if it might have been better if Chucklefish had restricted access the the beta - I don't mean make it private or exclusive, public beta is great - but do something like the devs of Project Zomboid were doing for ages: make the beta only available on the forums. That way people have to read the disclaimers instead of just grabbing it off Steam then whinging about it. That said, PZ devs had issues with trying to support the bandwidth demands, so maybe that wasn't the best situation. Perhaps just bigger disclaimers on the Steam page?
