It seems that because a lot of songs are very very similar (in fact, they appear to be just minor variations), music software like iTunes is having trouble telling them apart, and just assumes they're the same tracks. So you might have two versions of the same song, with very little variation between them, and your software just isn't recognizing that and only importing one.

This is compounded by the lack of organization of the Experimental folder, as there are lots of duplicate track names (5 "Constellation 1" tracks), lots that have different filenames but the same track name (Crystal Battle 1 appears as both "Crystal Battle 1" and "Output 2")... it's a real mess, and it makes trying to find the song that wasn't imported almost impossible.

Very disappointed that the Experimental soundtrack appears to just be a heap of sound files. Makes it very hard for someone who's OCD about organizing their music enjoy the actual tracks. In fact, I deleted all of the Experimental tracks just because I was getting so frustrated at them, it was actually making me kind of... erm... twitchy and upset. OCD folks know what the emotion is.

I think it should be organized better, duplicate tracks excised or changed in some way to make music software recognize them as distinct tracks, and re-uploaded ASAP.

EDIT: Also, the FAQ mentions the soundtrack is 24 tracks long, but there are only 22; somebody mistakenly counted the album artwork files.

I could listen to this sound track forever. It has great music that I'd be happy to listen to while playing the awesome game known as Starbound.

A soundtrack that has stuck with me as one of my favorites also is a fairly old game called Jazz Jackrabbit 2, the soundtrack is so nostalgic to me and has so much funk in it. But the soundtrack to this game has stormed into 1st on the list. :DD

By the way, the disappointment is sarcasm just to clarify for "those people"

I am very sorry that you are not fully satisfied and I can understand to an extent how you reacted to this situation due to your OCD. I also cannot disagree with you that it is a bit of a mess as I had a problem trying to organize things correctly as well. However I will urge you to please not to give up so easily by deleting the entire experimental soundtrack. The reason is that there are a ton of really great songs that have a lot of hard work and care put into them so I feel that you would be missing out. One suggestion, as it worked for me, is to use itunes to upload the songs then organize them in alphabetical order. You will then be able to easily see which ones have the same names as others. You can then remove the songs that have the same names or rename them (since all the constellation songs are different). I would assume that the duplicates have slight variations, although I have found some that are completely different, so deleting most duplicates wouldn't account for much loss.

Please also bare in mind that, as Curtis said in his previous post, mostly all the music that was produced for this game was placed into one folder and handed off to Tiy. This is the real world of music production and a lot of the time this is what it looks like unpolished. He did this because he trusted us to understand that it takes a lot of time, effort, and care to organize things and make them look as perfect as the main soundtrack is currently. The experimental soundtrack is not at this polished point yet, and yeah it's a mess, but it makes not only me but many others extremely happy to be given these works even if they are unfinished. He trusted us to understand that so I hope that in time you will too. I say this because I care, and I'm sure others do as well, that you are not enjoying this wonderful music as it should be enjoyed. I may not have OCD like you but I can understand what it must feel like to not be able to enjoy these songs as I know you want to be able to...

P.S. If it makes you feel any better I wanted to let you know, if you didn't already, that more songs will be released in the future and surely things will become more organized overtime. The most important thing is that nothing is rushed and that real time, effort, and care/love is put into these songs as I feel have been for what we currently have. Hope this helps!

I pre-ordered the game today because I'm excited about the game itself, but ended up downloading the soundtrack and falling in love with it. It is truly magnificent! In my opinion it is on the same level as the works of Alex Brandon and Nobuo Uematsu.

I'm happy that I finally got a chance to chip in a little extra for the soundtrack.
Now it's all goin' on my iPod. I really love ambient, lyrics-free stuff.

(Part of me wants to get my hands on a copy of FLStudio or something so I can learn how to do this kind of thing!)

  16. Mostly we just knew that people had liked the original stuff I'd done for the game, and while it wasn't in the style of the "official" soundtrack, that it couldn't hurt to include it. Think of it as the deleted scenes on a DVD-- never really developed once we moved on, but worth letting the community have a listen to, and more importantly, something we included so that the community could see (hear?) the entire process from start to now (which, by the way, isn't the "finish" :)...) Add to that the fact that I was sure people would want the stuff that was on SoundCloud given how popular it was, and I and Tiy made the choice to just included what are, in a sense "working" files as a bonus-- that much more for your hard-earned money.

I must the that the music is quite awesome. The piano included in the most soundtracks creates a nice atmosphere.
I am really looking forward to seeing these soundtracks in the game once it comes out.

I also liked the Experimental Tracks as well.
Nicely done! I feel like these 20 Euros were worth it in the pre-order.
