This isn't the suggestion forum

It's definitely understandable, what with the game itself still in beta and everything, but I just thought I'd point out that there's an entire dedicated suggestions forum where people might be better off posting their ideas for things to be put into the game, or thoughts on rebalancing, or things like that :p

    It's right here: http://community.playstarbound.com/index.php?forums/suggestions/

Just a heads up, since suggestions posted in this forum may end up getting lost among the other chatter, or not seen by the right people (if they're looking in Suggestions for ideas, they probably aren't looking here for them).

I agree to a point. Some people actually want some feedback from other people on an idea, in which case they come to the discussion board. But others seem to post here with a problem/complaint about the currently state of the game and choose to rant about it here. I dislike those posts, but what can do about 'em? Those rants aren't exactly suggestion material.

Well, the Suggestions forum is also open for discussing their ideas, though I can see posting here to see if it's something anyone might want before putting it in "officially," so to say ;)

I do agree that the rant/complaint posts could do to be cut down some though - most of the ones I've seen are related to things like unbalanced gameplay, or missing features, but it's all stuff that's clearly going to be fixed or added in by the time the game's doneX3

people don't really bother to check stuff before they post, just look at the amount of the same kind's of threads, could easily just looked for them and like them
and not make new threads stating the exact same thing. Hopefully this can make atleast SOME ppl to use the actual thread.

It seems the majority of the population (dare I say "vast majority"?) hang out in the general discussion. If you want an idea noticed, it stands to reason that you hang it up in a place that everyone's looking at. It's kind of stupid that that's the way it is and this area of the forum is very unorganized, but that's how it is. :(

Well there is a distinction between having a concrete idea to put forwards, and so making a suggestion, and having more general observations or issues to debate from which arise suggestions.

This is something I've seen in a lot of forums, sadly - people don't read how things are supposed to go, and assume that it isn't important that things be done right anyway :p

Definitely, as was said by Plystire just a bit ago :)

I mostly made this post to remind people, not really to admonish anyone (I'm not a moderator or anything, after all :p). Though I do see the point in posting some things here if you're not sure if anyone would want to see your ideas anyway :p

I see no harm in replying to assist bumping this up and maybe letting a few more people see the thread title and maybe get a hint. :D

Just saying: when you click on the "leave a suggestion" or whatever option is on the launcher that it opens a page directly to this forum, General Discussion, so it's a little understandable how people would post their suggestions in the place that the game, itself, points them towards. They should probably go about fixing that, but there's more important things to work on.

EDIT: It's the "leave feedback" button that directs you to the General Discussion board.

True... maybe we need a new launcher button for suggestions explicitly, or at least a sticky thread. It may help with the traffic problem we're experiencing here.

Maybe if I report my own post, a moderator will come to assist? :3

EDit: Gonna give it a try. Please forgive me, whichever Mod responds to this distress call!!X3

Some people also want feed back on thier idea before posting an official suggestion so as not to clutter up the actual suggestion forum.

But if they were directed to the suggestions board right away, they could see if it has been suggested already, and with more eyes on the suggestion board, there'd be more feedback on suggestions there, instead of here. I know I'm guilty of asking for feedback, but only after seeing that my thread in the suggestion board had widely gone unnoticed by the community. I think if traffic were higher in suggestions, there'd be little reason to post it here.

I'm not saying not to have that button. It was just in response to the people complaining that this isn't a suggestion forum. The suggestion forum should only be used for complete and well thought out suggestions and thus general discussion is a much better place to work on the idea and get feedback on it than the suggestion forum.

i suggest you take your suggestion to the suggestion forums

But only once they are complete and actually ready to be suggested to the devs right?

pls, no more suggest. it is becoming a weird word all of a sudden

my interpretation of what a suggestion forum is for is refined, well-thought out and elaborate ideas. general discussion is for discussing anything generally starbound, including minor wants/suggestions/likes/dislikes, etc. and discussing things like what is a refined suggestion and what is a general preference

It's a lost battle - Suggestions pop up everywhere. Even in threads where people are discussing the game in general.

Why is it lost? Because this is a public beta - Enforcing the rules and forcing posts and threads to the suggestions forum is a behemoth task when only a fraction of people obey them.

You should see how some of the closed beta forums from some of the game I test look compared to this. Beautifully clean forums with subforums for each aspect of the game with constant pruning of old and obsolete posts - Only made possible through a small number of contributors.

I would say that yes, this is the general discussion, but it's the general discussion for a game in beta being played by beta testers. It's only natural that game feedback and suggestions will appear here. Some people make potential suggestions looking for input from others so they can refine their ideas before posting a formal suggestion in the suggestion forum.

So the general consensus is that the Suggestions forum is for complete and well-developed ideas, whereas General Discussion is a good place for tentative ideas or initial discussion, along with anything else that goes on in General Discussion. I think I can see that - it's a bit rough, but as Mansen said, this is one of the things that comes with being a public beta rather than a closed beta.

As Plystire said, though, it could help to "sort" things a bit better if people were directed straight to the Suggestions forum if they have suggestions that they want to see implemented. It would help direct more people to look at suggestions that are solidly formed as well, to help encourage discussion of those ideas as well as the ones that people aren't so sure of yet. There could even be 'tags' like in the modding section to tell people whether your idea is in a sort of "early thoughts" phase or whether you think it's a good, solid idea.
