Geez dude, you really must be dense, or have anger management issues. Have you not read the countless notices about the current state of release? Especially the part about how if you can't handle bugs, missing features, unbalanced gameplay, etc. (ie. basically EVERYTHING you just wrote) then WAIT FOR THE NEXT BLOODY STAGE. What you're basicially doing is moving into a building that's not finished, then trying to sue the builders because you were stupid enough to jump down an open elevator shaft.
Better still, for the sake of saving all of us from your incessant whining, please just wait until the final release, since you clearly have no capacity to understand the release schedule.

Most modern desktop distros aren't any more complicated than Windows, honestly.

  3. Vizendel

And still they'd whine that they don't like change and that it'd be a too big download, or that the disk won't run properly.

Just so they have something to whine about.

Windows XP is no longer a supported OS. So it comes as no surprise that the game does not fully run on XP. Frankly, I'm on the "you should be glad they're even considering XP users" team.

Ok, it seems some of you didn't get the idea of what i tried to tell you guys. Let me rephrase in your language: you just can't call a 'beta' an elevator cabin with amazingly gorgeous emerald buttons and 5.1 music system in it, while you still don't have a shaft for it to ELEVATE. Core feature of an elevator - is to lift people to different floors, not to entertain you with music and diamond disco-ball. 'Beta' is when the elevator is 100% working, but for example the light bulb is not installed, or there is no mirror, or the are no labels on the buttons, etc.
    It's the priorities that matter.

Leaving core gameplay design decisions that can make or break the game is just... I don't know, stupid? Unprofessional? Irresponsible?

I agree with the OP, this build is incredibly stable for me, and I've played quite a few betas where that isn't the case (which is totally fine, in a beta).

The lack of crashing and game breaking bugs is really refreshing for everyone, as it allows us and the devs to focus on developing the actual gameplay instead of fixing it (most of the time, RIP xp users).

Before you start saying exactly what you think a beta is, maybe you should look at what it traditionally meant and how it's evoled in recent years?
Alpha used to mean that it was a in-house only version, not for the public, oh how that has changed!
Beta was a prerelease version that could be tested by the public.
I don't believe any core mechianics are not implemented, they need developing further but we have a wonderful team at Chucklefish that want to listen to us to mould the game into something we want.

I don't think something like Gentoo would exactly be workable for the general public. I wish Windows didn't have the hold on the market it does but until someone makes an OS as easy to use as windows that's more stable and better performing they will always have it.

I can't believe how ridiculous people are being with this "Alpha" "Beta" crap. "http://playstarbound.com/how-the-beta-is-going-to-work/" Some of you need to read this. All of these things you are complaining about and saying to compare this to other "Alpha"/"Beta" stages you have taken part in are addressed in that very link. The developers know what they are talking about when they call this a "Beta". I really love how you people think the developers are not professional just because they aren't implementing one line to fix the Windows XP compatibility issues, but if you actually read the posts from the developers, this is supposed to be an open source uncompiled unfinished developement. We are still in Stage one right now and it even says that you shouldn't expect this to run on all low end machines efficiently or even at all. They are still coding most of the game features right now and won't be putting all of their time into the minor things until everything from stage one is complete. All of this information is clearly laid out by the hard working team on this very website. Seriously ungrateful people need to learn to read.

Absolutely. I finally was able to make it on after missing two days of Beta. Apparently I missed several updates, and the game is working quite well so far; it has only crashed on me once. To be honest, I think those whom you are referencing should be grateful that Chucklefish has even released Starbound for us. I'm taking advantage of the early phase to figure out the mechanics. I must say that the soundtrack is rather refreshing.

Obviously, this game is a huge amount of code, and it won't be easy for them to finish. What better way to test the bugs than to let us in? So, thank you SinisterAura. I agree completely. Alpha, Beta, or Omega-13 (small joke), this release is perfectly acceptable in my book and I look forward to the many updates to come.

Haven't had a single blip or issue with the Beta thus far, apart from some slowdown in fullscreen mode which was rather random and odd. Good job Chucklefish!

Oh, also, XP is pretty outdated - do MS even release updates for it anymore? If they don't, then thats a pretty vulnerable OS you're toting right there. Vista/7 aren't that bad, they just use a small amount of extra resources to run. Linux is always an easy, free alternative if you dislike MS.

I had just a couple of bugs with the game, but one of them was because I pressed F11 more than 4 times in a row by mistake, but besides that it's everything running smoth.

I've been fortunate enough to have a really stable experience thus far in the beta with exception to a couple of crashes. The devs have openly said this is the first stage of beta and is going to be choc a bloc full of bugs and balance issues as well as missing features etc. I think people need to take this into account instead of immediately thinking it's a completed beta (a surprising number of people seem to have this attitude across the forums) the devs still have a lot of work to implement and have even said if you want to play a game that's closer to being finished then wait for the next stages of beta or for the actual release of the finished product.

What everyone has to keep in mind is that this beta is not for your enjoyment. They didn't have to release it at this stage but the point at which they want large scaling testing is up to them. Releasing it in this state allows them to get tonnes of information about things, and they can do big overhauls of systems like the level scaling, and weapons and armour they are working on. There does seem to be a large amount of people that have the attitude that this is somehow a version intended for release, which they've blatantly stated it isn't. It's easy to feel this way even if you know it's not, and it's important to go into this knowing that there are many key features missing, it's buggy as hell, unbalanced, has major issues, most likely will crash, and may not even work. They could have waited and fixed some of these issues before releasing it, but this just helps them get information and do things faster, to put it simply.
