Why is smelting not instantaneous? Why does it take freaking forever to mine anything, even with a decent pickaxe? Why does sleeping in a bed heal you so slowly? None of this waiting around makes any sense to me. All it does is artificially make the game longer, which is not a good thing.

This game is not for those seeking instant gratification.

It's similar to Terraria but with a decidedly slower pace more akin to Minecraft.

I don't really see a problem, by the time i open my inv and move stuff around and come back it would be down 70 in less then a min. As for bed healing i do find bit slow but if it happened where full heal on sleep then could just carry a bed or a tent anywhere you need to heal and boom full hp. That wouldn't work.

There are better ways to slow the pace of a game than to force the player to wait for everything. Waiting around is boring, and the goal of a game is to provide fun as close to 100% of the time as it can. This game isn't even trying.

Waiting for materials to smelt is often a game mechanic, have you never played any others?
Mining doesn't take that long if your clever about it, aim for ore that's in dirt/sand for quick farming (if you get a bonehammer drop it's even quicker).
The bed healing is last resort, use bandages and stimpacks.
If it tests your patience that much maybe it's not the game for you.....

I think a lot of people, including me, would disagree with you on this.

I have no problem with the smelting. In fact I think the speed is quite nice, it's much faster than minecraft and when you're doing multiple things it's ready in no time. It just feels more realistic to me.

The sleeping to heal does take too long, though, I agree, but I hear bandages are going to be way easier to make after tonight's update.

As for the mining taking too long, I hear Tiy is going to speed it up in tonight's update. That will hopefully make it feel a lot better.

    1) You don't have to wait for items to smelt. You can put them in there start it up and walk away and do anything else.

    2) Read the patch notes for today. They have already sped up mining slightly.

    3) You don't have to sleep in a bed to heal. Just make bandages. They are even easier to make from the patch today from just plant starches or whatever.

If a game's goal is not to provide fun as much as it can, then what is the goal of a game? Games are a form of entertainment, and entertainment is supposed to, well, entertain. If entertainment doesn't entertain, then it fails.

EDIT: I also hardly ever come across smelting as a game mechanic. I rarely play RPGs and MMOs.

  10. Man, why do people feel that everything has to be instant. It's not a race to see who can get the best stuff the fastest. Space Rome wasn't built in a day.

I am entertained by the fact that it actually takes time to make progress in Starbound.

With that sentence, I have effectively destroyed your argument.

I like that Starbound is a slower paced game, but slower does not mean tedious. Right now, mining is a little tedious. It's probably my biggest gripe, but tonight's update will hopefully change that.

No need to get hostile, son. This is a beta, Starbound is not going to be perfect right off the bat so don't pretend it is just because you're a fan. Most of us are fans here, but tedious gameplay isn't good gameplay, but I don't think Starbound should turn into Terraria either. The slow nature of the game needs to come from tactical decisions and methodically building yourself up, not from tedious grinding and waiting around.

  14. Also, 11clock... what you find entertaining isn't always going to be what other people find entertaining. One person is not a valid sample size.

Taking time and waiting around are two completely different things. Therefore, your statement is invalid to the discussion.

As others have stated already, there is only as much waiting as you allow there to be.

I do other things while I'm crafting, such as farm meat off beasts or explore the surface of the planet to find dungeons, caverns and ore.

You can choose to waste your time, or you can choose to play the game.

I agree with the premise of this thread. I do not agree with the specifics. In Minecraft you would smelt ore, and that would take a lot longer than it does here, but it was never a problem. You just fired up the furnaces and went and chopped some wood or something. In this game, however, I feel that the progression is too slow. Wooden tools would help. Now the tiers are too few and far between, and it takes ages to get even an iron tool, which still isn't that good. In minecraft you could easily have a diamond pickaxe within half an hour, which I admit is taking things too far. But this is not quite right. Terraria had a good balance.

But mining ores takes just a little too long I think right now. The crafting and smelting, however, I feel is stupidly fast.

    I love me my bonehammer!

Also, as most people have said here, it's more about being smart than waiting.
You have a lot to smelt? Build more than one furnace.
Having troubling mining? Get a better mining pick. I just made my silver pick and it one-shots dirt.
Tired of waiting to heal in bed? Make some bandages then.

There are ways to solve problems. You use something called "critical thinking". It can be tough, but it really helps in the long run. Lazy people who'd rather not spend time doing things tend to know how to maximize their critical thinking towards allowing them to be more lazy.

I'd be willing to say that the main part of the fun in this game is discovering things. If you can't enjoy that (exploring, something that takes time and effort), then this might not be the game you hoped it was.

I'm glad to be informed that I could actually walk away the furnace while it smelts things. I wasn't aware of this.

I'm also glad to see that they are making mining a litter faster.

Bed healing could still be faster, though.
