This game sucks, and you know it

Please folks, don't pretend like it doesn't. I've been patiently waiting just as long as most of you, quietly waiting for the day. When it finally does come out, it has a convoluted armor penetration system that 5 minutes of play by any developer could have told you wouldn't have worked. Then they release a patch that makes it worse believe it or not, with orbital strikes aka birds one shotting anything that moves. Just dodging these birds would be a game in an of it self, like some sort of Olypmic Torture Event.


Yes, it's BETA. Yes, in a few patches these will be fixed. Yes, I'm going to fade away into the shadows until it's actually playable.



But their are countless numbers of people who are buying this game right now on steam who are going to destroy it on meta-critic. Most people aren't going to be like me and shelve the game for a few months until it's playable.

And those of you who are actually "playing" the game claiming it's fun, really aren't. You are using all sorts of unintended mechanics such as blocking off enemies or hitting them through walls just to get passed them. Anyone who is actually playing the game as intended, as in crafting an iron set only to realize it's bugged and they can't get the silver set recipe, is just facepalming.



And to you, the developers. God bless you for creating this game. It still needs a ton of work, I'm sure you guys are working over time fixing all these things for us. And for that we are eternally grateful. But will one of you, for the love of Christ, just make a new character RIGHT NOW and play the game? Not long mind you, just make a new character and get yourself to the Penguin boss. If you do make it that far, you can clearly see that if you aren't using some game breaking mechanic, or looking up coordinates on google for some overpowered gun, their is no chance you can lollerscate your way passed the first boss let alone the rest of this mess.

Once you find that out, do the rest of us a favor and do that internally before you push out these patches. You don't want to make this any worse then it is. People actually paid for this game, it's not a free beta test. The moment you start taking money from customers, is the moment they can critique you.



TLDR: Love the game. But I rather juggle chainsaws then try to play Frogger with these deathwing birds you have flying around. See you in a few patches when it's not an exercise in futility. To the rest of you claiming this is fun, make a new character right now and pretend you don't have google coordinates for that overpowered gun. Pretend like you're some average Joe who just bought this game on steam. See how long it takes you to alt F-4.

Overall point of the thread was well written, but no one will bother to read it because they will base their posts on the title alone, unfortunately.

I feel the game has many issues. But I'm reserving judgement until I've "beat" the game.
I also feel the game has tons of potential, and while it might suck now, it will be amazing once we get through the eye of the storm.

Already we have a prime example of someone who quit reading once they saw the title.

He DID quit playing, genius. He's waiting until release.

 

The fact is starbound was not ready for a PAID beta. The game is a mess right now and any level headed person can see that. Yes they posted disclosures that it would be like this but they did make the choice of releasing it on steam for everyone to purchase and that was a mistake. So many peoples first experiance of starbound is going to be a horrible one and instead of waiting for it to be fixed, they will just move on. It was a definite fail releasing this on steam.

 

You can't hit enemies through walls any more, just putting that out.

And to say that the game 'sucks' is a bit on the harsh, grossly opinionated side, don't you think? The game has issues, such as the flying enemies going all Birdemic on your ass at the drop of the hat and able to follow you quite a ways, but that doesn't make it 'suck'.

The game is fun when your goal is to explore and try to come across the various wonders in the worlds. Does it get annoying that the birds can be so crazy at times? Yes, yes it does. It doesn't make the game 'suck' though.

 

1) Birds not that hard, you just don't know how to dodge or aim
2) I used bows for the longest time until I could afford a pistol, and still continued using bow to farm for leather.
3) They just pushed this patch out, other issues required dire attention, namely the fact that it absolutely did not work on Windows XP
4) The game isn't about killing things to get to the end game. It's about exploration. And I'm having a damn good time exploring and finding Floran torture prisons and USCM bases, so don't tell me I'm not having fun. Damnit.
5) Yes this is a beta, and one that we all paid for. But the rest of us are coping with it, knowing it's going to be fixed, and continuing to play the beta for it's real purpose- TESTING AND GIVING FEEDBACK. And while yes, you are giving feedback, it's not very constructive or helpful to the devs.

 

I can only see bad things coming from this thread bad things...

I think it's great -- even in it's unfinished form.

The additional content, mechanics, and bug fixes will only elevate the game from here.

 

I don't agree with any of this, I have not looked up coordinates for guns or anything and I'm progressing just fine. I mean shit as soon as I started all I did was make a house get some wood/copper/iron and started going to town on armor/weapons. In like half an hour the game was piss-easy. And I enjoyed every minute of it. Please don't tell me how to think or try and make it out like you know what I enjoy. This game is fun, even in its early beta stage. And plenty of people agree with me who aren't mindless drones.

Yes the title is a bit far-fetched but everything else Narbays has said hits the nail perfectly on the head. Please take a moment to read the rest before spewing that "don't like don't play" kindergarten bulls***. It really was not a good idea to make this a paid beta, not to mention with everyone having access to it now. It's not, I repeat NOT good for a game of this magnitude to get launched in it's early stages this way. Some people think way too highly of the average person's intelligence for their own good.

 

I havent had a problem dodging or fighting either. The only issue I've had with birds was today after the last patch and they were swarming my house somehow smelling me through the walls (lol I think I had like 6 trying to get in)

I guess some mechanics are easier for some than others.

I do agree with Viscye. Unpaid closed beta is best that way we don't have the forums stunk up with entitlement heh.

But then I'd have to wait to play... so I'm glad I get a chance to help this game be good for release.

From what I gather from your post, its that you aren't getting the job done. This thread also screams 12 year old. I'm being modest now.......more like 6 year old.

 

I've yet to see an early access title that hasn't bit the developer in the rear later on.

It gives a bad impression of the product, and when release time comes people already have a sour taste in their mouth.
I'm starting to think the game industry as a whole should put an end to this early access craze.

It's good for us who can tolerate the bad, but overall it's an ineffective system.
