This game is just too f***ing hard

Discussion in 'Starbound Discussion' started by Electroflux, Dec 5, 2013.

  1. I've played Super Meat Boy, and I can gladly say that Starbound is easier in every single way.

    ...Until you fight the boss.

I took the dig and explore approach and found a sweet 2 handed mace that shoots a spray of bones like a shotgun when I swing it. It has been very helpful dealing with some of the mobs. I have died a ton already to mobs and they are seriously tough. If they werent then the game would be lacking and not much fun. I am loving the challenge. Also consider possibly potions and food to help with survival.

It is fantastic, I hope they do not nerf the difficulty, or at least keep the current difficuly and give those that are struggling an easy mode of some sort.

I for one have to agree with you on this one. The game is insanely difficult for me.

  4. Yeah, I thought i wanted that sweet 2 handed axe until i realized how slow it was swinging, and at my level i was doing better with the weapon i started with.

I've gotten better at playing, it's hard, but it's a good hard. Surface travel, duck, dodge, dive, and get loot! Ore and loot!

edit: Also, the enemies don't move too fast for bows, lol.

So why should that mean that the *game* is to blame, instead of your ability? I don't mean this as a personal dig or anything, but it is the core of the argument here. For the past decade or so gamers have been demanding that *games* should get easier, instead of the *player* getting better... and that spits in the face of what gaming has a huge focus in. If you have never painted before, and then try (and fail on your first attempt, obviously), does that mean painting should be easier? Or does it mean you should practice and learn, because nobody is a pro their first time around?

Food for thought that I hope at least some of the current generation of gamers listen to. Gaming used to be about learning the ins and outs of every system, mastering techniques and skill... and now.... now it's "this game is too hard after < 24 hours of play, that must mean the game is flawed!". That isn't what gaming is about. And if that is a mentality that any of you subscribe to, then you aren't meant for gaming. Again, not a diss or anything... just simple fact. It's sad to think that if Tetris or Super Mario (original) came out in this modern age, people would complain that they're too hard and demand that it be dumbed down. The game isn't at fault (there's no such thing as "too hard" unless that means impossible... which is only a reality when it comes to, quite literally, impossible to complete puzzles (2+2=4, but you're only supplied a 7... for instance), the *gamer* is... and that's not a bad thing. It just means you need practice and drive.

Instead of complaining, why aren't you striving to be better? It's far more rewarding, I guarantee it. Because once you DO master it and it becomes easy for you, you will have actually accomplished something.

I realize this is off-topic, but I made a thread before and couldn't get a response. How the hell does one refill the durability on a pickaxe?

I've been throwing them in a chest and crafting new ones this whole time.

Open inventory and select ore by clicking on it. Note, it must be unrefined ore (so still a nugget and not a bar) and it must match type of tool (copper for copper..you get it) left click on pickaxe..keep clicking and wahla! hp on pickaxe restored. If it's right click instead of left click, you'll know because item will pop out of slot instead of staying there..pretty sure it's left click though

    Thank you my good man.

EDIT: Jesus, it just hit me how expensive this can end up getting... What was wrong with them healing when you go back to your ship?

I wouldn't say it's that hard, once you get some wheat, and a basic cooking table you can make bread which heal's you, and as some one else posted you can make bandages real easy as well.

Only died like 5 time's and I have full iron :D and can pretty much 1-2 hit kill things :D

I haven't gotten to the boss yet, but I haven't had any trouble with mobs. Sure I died a few times, but that's just part of playing the game: you know a game is too easy when you can pick it up and not die once.

I found it difficult at first, but after learning the abilities of the creatures in the world with me (and finding a better sword helped) things improved a lot.

I don't think the difficulty needs tweaking so much as the fact that you start with no armour, and getting some is really hard. And your weapon is terrible. Maybe the starter gear could be improved.

Started a new character about an hour again. Within 20 minutes, after I was all set up. I started walking east, found a miniboss, killed it, and gut a sword that basically onehits any non-miniboss on this planet. Along with a judicious use of bandages, the only time I died was from doing something stupid.

omg ffs this game isn't hard... I've died like 3 times since release. use healing items, stay topped up, don't face tank the enemies. What games are you guys used to playing? X(

The thing about starbound is that it has tons of influence from games from the devs childhoods. These games include the old hardcore Nintendo games like castlevania. Also i feel like the devs have said multiple times that the want the game to be hard.

I really didn't find this game to be too hard at all, just mildly challenging. While it is true that you die a lot in the beginning, as soon as I managed to get my hands on my lil' legendary sword and and iron bow, things became considerably easier for me. A handy tip is to always carry bandages with you at all times, they're proper life savers!

The UFO boss is broken, armor/armor pen is either bugged or designed improperly, and there's very little good or interesting loot.

Yes i agree it's tough but i'm enjoying the challenge so far, but perhaps a difficulty tweak should be in order

It's not dumbing down, it's called asking for a removal or mitigation of an extreme limiting factor that has nothing to do with mining or gathering resources to create items that are necessary to properly explore regions (unless you get lucky and happen to find a really good weapon or tech or something that makes the game a lot easier). For those of us with mortal luck, the game is really hard BECAUSE the progression is limited by a factor that's hard to acquire in the early game when dieing and killing is significantly harder (thus making that limiting factor worse).

Tldr: Money for crafting makes the abundance of material feel useless and insignificant while slowing the progression of the game for no real, apparent reason. They shouldn't need such a steep monetary cost to slow people down. And if they did, they could utilize high monetary costs for items in tier 2 or 3 where the player is more accustomed to the game and actually has something more than a flimsy bow and cloth covering them.

And you clearly don't understand what "dumbing down" actually means...

Armor points being added to your overall defense is broken, so that is something keep in mind when fighting the boss.
