Stop trying to be a white knight, we have seen about 20 comments in this thread saying the same thing. Keep on topic or don't even bother.

    id like to know this.
Aswell as im sure alot of people would also like to know.
where did he get his info from?

if it is official release in August then beta should LITERALLY! be just around the corner.

if its beta release in August then.....

from what ive seen read up on and spent my time following i can say why are they trying to make the beta release so perfect and flawless.
this is also one of the problems i have with the devs trying to keep everything they are working on a secret. i don't want to be spoiled but at least tell us how far along these hidden parts of the game are.
if these are the factors denying you from beta release just say so.
keeping us this much is the dark is really not helping the community.
as i said don't want spoilers just a word going yea sorry but one part of what we wont tell you inst working but its almost there :)

phew cant believe i took effort tom post this

There is no secret. The game isn't done. I've been watching the programming Bart has been doing and he has lots to do yet.

Yep, this is another infuriating thing. No release date. No beta release date. An estimate that means almost nothing (example the 2015 Ferrari is coming out in 2015!). Little snippets of info (at best) about how the game is moving. Minecraft turned into a Cinderella story because they let people in early and kept everyone up to date on everything going on. And before anyone says that is a bad thing for Starbound look at the profits of Minecraft. These profits allow constant additions to the game as well as funding for other projects for Mojang to follow.

Am I complaining about these things? No. But these are what come to mind as issues causing many people to go nuts. Knowing the problem is the first step. What happens after that, I probably won't know about for a while. I don't check in this place too often anymore.

My argument is more, why work on facial expressions and UI options and such, instead of working to try get this game into Beta stages. (If it isn't that is). tweaking certain visuals has no appeal to me as a player, when that stuff can be seen to after beta release. Just to clarify to people what I mean. (so please don't go on with abuse or anything, as it is not constructive).

Minecraft was unique as there was nothing to compare it to, and Notch was at the time basically one guy pecking away at it.
This is a bit different. Ford could sell the ModelT right out of the box no options, because there was no competition like his yet.

That said with the roadmap update: I will admit progress seems to be going well. Its not likely to come along this month but they are further then it seemed.
Still some large holes in universe gen though.. which is one of the big selling points. Afew other points too.

this is why id just like them to say how much they are not telling or showing us isn't done and ready.
all of the spoiler info they treat as if they do tell us anything even oh this thing we wont tell you is only 50% done that it will ruin them.
id just like a yep not ready yet sorry we cant tell you about it but its not ready.
i dont want a spoilers i just want more information about how the game is coming along.

That's your perspective. The developers believe that the game should look as perfect as they can minus the quests. This sort of happened with the BF3 betas and alphas. I participated in both, and the games graphics did NOT change. Neither did the content like vehicles, weapons. Everything that was gameplay was the same from alpha to beta to release. They were tweaked for technical reasons every time a new release came out, but I saw that more bugs were crushed and and destroyed over the alpha/beta periods

The game should feel finished but it will have bugs that need to be steamed out that will only be found from constant, repeated, active play. This is what the beta testers are for. When the large majority of bugs, glitches, and exploits are discovered and neutralized, the game will be ready for release.

Getting the game into the beta stage is finishing the games release content and finding every bug they can before they can consider a feature done. The beta is to find all the bugs from constant play overtime that the developers cannot do since they are constantly working and programming the game. The release will be the most perfect version, but that release should be no different in content aside from what is stated to be missing which is quests.

you do realize they have said more than that isn't going to be until release like the stretch goals

That should be a given since they need extra people to develop those features aside from the mainstream completion. What you are stating is aside the point. It's extra material that doesn't need to be required to complete the game at release.

If your argument consists of: "Work on the features that I think are necessary for beta, not the things I don't find necessary for beta", then you don't really have an argument.

honestly xD I agree with doc, the game look playable, I see no reason why we couldn't play now as the devs do? there isn't anything game breaking that we know of! I get that its not done and its not my place to say "WANNT IT NOWWWWWW" but I will say, its beta already. call it as you may, the game is playable and sure there are bugs, but you can play...so yah...

    my bad, mr OP...
i'm not trying to be the "white knight" here, it's just that, being part of this community, i'd like it's discussions to be as clean and polite as possible for the sake of having constructive threads

on-topic: i understand your point of view. sometimes it DOES feel like the devs are implementing unecessary features that they could've handled post-release, but for me it looks like that everyone is focusing on their jobs, and chucklefish team isn't composed of 1 person, doing 1 thing at a time...
like, if you hire someone to do the core coding, and someone to create sprites, the second one won't just sit and wait till all the main code is ready... he will work on the sprites!
the problem here is that, if devs showed coding on daily updates, they'd be as boring as watching the life-spam of a fly
so they show us the more "graphical" stuff, like dungeons and monsters, but the more "necessary" coding and server stuff is also being worked behind the curtains! :)

oh, and a lil tip: some of the devs do live streams very often, like bartwe on his twitch tv, and he answer user questions there!
you could ask them about their opinions on what is and what isnt necessary for the game to be released, its more guaranteed that you'll get an acceptable answer there

Well the point is everyone wants to say what THEY think beta ready is. Maybe we can listen to the devs, who I PROMISE you want that milestone to come more than anyone else, who say it's not ready yet.

They'll give us a beta date when they have one. I promise they will, haha.

People do understand. Have you considered that it is you who lacks understanding? Quite a few folks have taken time to write some very well thought out explanations, and you've ignored every last one of them. No matter how much you try to spin your arguments as altruistic, they can always be distilled down to your own impatience.

So, you think facial expressions are a waste of time do you? Just what I'd expect from a soulless robot! I'm on to you sir. Your avatar is more than just an avatar isn't it? It's a representation of your true self!

Well let me tell you something, you soulless, emotionless machine: Facial expressions may be useless to somebody who lacks the ability to express emotions, but for the rest of us non-mechanical beings, it is indeed quite important. This game isn't all about YOU, y'know!

As far as I understand from your earlier post and the OP post you made, I understand that you think it's playable. The point is that the developers don't. You can argue with the developers about it all you want, but their minds aren't going to change. They have their plans. They need to follow them to get the most success. Any criticism about what they are doing and what your plans are for them should go directly towards them, they did say they are open with the community. So you have all potential to ask for an earlier beta, but I can guarantee you it's not gonna happen.

I'm not trying to say you're wrong here in it's being playable. I think the game looks playable, and I have been wanting to play so bad everyday that it almost ruined all other games for me. But I don't know what they are doing, you know? All I know is the developers of the game that know every single thing about it know a lot better to do with it than I do, so I will wait patiently.

I should clarify in my original post. I stated: "looks pretty beta...", not "It IS beta"

And yes I have taken all on board that has been said, but a few people have gone back to not actually addressing the issue I brought up. I have gotten enough explanations now. So thank you.
