There is no Hell?

    Hi,

yesterday, I was digging all the way down and made it to the lava. Then I exploited fact that lava can't melt dirt so I was placing dirt bellow me and digging down. Screen was not scrolling down there so when I was at the edge and put last dirt piece from bellow me out, I felt down and melted in "lava behind visible screen" ...

Why I am writing it - is there any Hell layer in the game? It may be pretty rare but I hope it is at least planed for the future:)

Hell is kinda more in line with Terraria's thing.

We're going to get stuff of our own, though. Planet sized technological bases, more varied underground secrets and much more has been confirmed to be planned. I wouldn't be surprised if we get something along the lines of say, the Space Pirate thermal power plants from Metroid Prime where you'd expect Hell.

  3. This is a sci-fi setting, not a fantasy one.

They might implement some demonlike aliens who happen to live in or near magma. Tweak the lore to imply that this alien race inspired Earth-based tales of demons. That'd be a way to implement something highly similar.

But an actual Hell? No way.

And we are sure there is no single planet in the Universe which has not some Hell layer? :)
Billions of people believe there is Hell and we do not live in Fantasy world

I think there is (or was going to be) a core biome, but no "hell". This isn't Terraria.

yeah, put them into layer right above magma, place there some torches and torture stuff and we have "SCI-FI compatible hell" :)
But I wonder if overheating is implemented in the game? We must warm ourself but we do not have to cool ourself at all?

Eh. I wouldn't expect to see a Hell biome in the traditional sense like in Terraria given that Starbound is Sci-fi and not Fantasy.. If there were to be such a thing, I'd hope it would be played off more like the idea of Hell in Doom, in which case it isn't actually hell, but a portal once opening in the past, revealing an Alien race that humans would than perceive to be demons. That I could accept, and enjoy if it was particularly easter-eggish.

Though on that note, isn't there already Glitch worshiping demons?(The Glitch from who'm the Terrifying Wings drop)

I think it'd be cool if you could make a sort of heat-proof pod. You take it down to the magma level, set it up, jump in and drop down.

It floats down for a while (varying by the size of the planet, maybe?) before hitting another layer, where it latches onto the floor and opens at the bottom so you can dig down.

I think there's a lot that could be done with the insides of a planet. It could just remain how it is (with the layer of lava) or it could be explored further; getting closer to the core means you need a protective suit so you don't overheat, Exploding gas pockets become more and more common, and maybe you can even come out the other side of a planet (assuming the core is slightly less than molten, like on a moon). Even a layer that consists of colossal caverns full of crystals would be awesome (think of the big crystal cavern in The Core, the one they totally didn't expect to fall into), and instead of having normal background blocks, it has an open background like the surface, only showing dark caverns stretching on and on.

Nah, that's a Metroid Prime Space Pirate.

If you're gonna do a Space Pirate homage, do it right. Cold, harsh metallic structures, glass jars with freakish alien abominations in them, scary alien looking technology with sharp edges, etc.

There's hell... And then there's hell in space. Hell in space is the middle of a Space Pirate encampment.

  12. Like I said, there could be a Hell-like one. But bringing in supernatural elements into Starbound would do a lot of harm to the setting. Why do you think Jules Verne novels were so popular? It was all science fiction, but there were no supernatural elements, and that made his stories believable. That's a huge advantage that sci-fi has. Dragon-riding elves who throw fireballs out of their hands may be cool, but since you know it can't be real, it creates a strong mental barrier between the player and the setting. Sci-fi doesn't have that; it's all *possible*.

As for what people believe, that's irrelevant. Every culture in every time in every location on the planet have had some really, really weird beliefs (a normal reaction for a simple-minded creature of little means in an incomprehensibly huge and complex world), and the universe doesn't care about any of it. Yes, I can say with more than 99.99% certainty that there is no Hell.

...hah, the last Metroid game I played was Super Metroid and the graphics quality was... not all that high, they just looked kind of crab-like. The modern design does look a lot more demonic!

In any case, like I said, I'd be totally fine with demonlike aliens living close to magma. But please, never add any supernatural elements. As long as we stay within the whole "any sufficiently advanced tech..." concept, it stays believable. Once you add actual magic, it all disappears. That would be very, very bad for the game.

...This too. I don't scare easy, and Event Horizon was a movie that creeped me the hell out.

But I think that's on the way already. There were some screenshots of what looked like an abandoned space station a while back, of the Sci-Fi horror type.

Very nice post and I agree but for example Bone Dragon boss is quite fantasy, isn't it? So I thought we may use some fantasy stuff there and over there.
But agree that "classic fantasy Hell" would not be suitable here

If those billions of people believe that hell is in the molten core of planets, they're wrong.

I always thought space pirates were kinda cute.

To be honest, I don't think beliefs are the core of this discussion. Just gonna cause crap, as it usually does.

I never said hell doesn't exist, I said that it doesn't exist in the core of planets. Though that was a pompous way of saying it. I should have said "people who believe in hell don't believe that it's in the cores of planets."

  19. Yikes, is that in the game? I haven't been playing much beyond the early game (all the planets I visit end up being empty) so I didn't meet one of those.

Well that's kind of disappointing, I thought this was strictly a sci-fi game, not a fantasy one. Hrm...

    Thanks for the info.

If by hell you mean molten lava and rocks populated by monsters. There ARE underground magma biomes on some worlds independant of the erroneously named core biome, that represents the pure-lava stopping point.

If by hell you mean, Dante's inferno and/or the god-fear fueled crazy of Hieronymus Bosch... er, no.
