Item editors would be really helpful since it does help facilitate bug-testing quite a bit, not to mention players who do want to "save" their characters will have some sort of way of getting their items back.

Do we have a rough (or exact) idea of when the next save wipe is going to be?

The next patch, which is in a day or two

I worked for a video game compagny for a while as a game tester and to make sure there was no bug caused by older save files so we had to wipe everything (saves, profiles, memory cache, etc) on every single patch that came in, so it may feel sad for some ppls here to lose your progress so far but in the end it will be much better since they will be able to fix bugs from the game itself and not bug carried by older/incompatible saves files.
When that next patch come out ill make sure to remove not only residual saves files but configs files and start fresh.

I can agree with this, having Beta/Alpha tested more games then I care to count. I am used to the idea of having to constantly lose character data, and have things wiped and removed. That doesn't bug me (When I'm warned ahead of time and told it's a Beta obviously.) right now especially browsing the forums I'm worried there are going to be alot of false reports flooding in after the wipe. "Waaaah I'm crashing and I don't know why, I did this and this and this" Leaving out the fact they tried to save their character's data elsewhere and swap it back in or something like that. I don't get why people are so upset or shocked by this, everyone was warned not to play this Stage of the Beta if they had issues with buggy games, games lacking content, or constant wipes. =/

Could you make a converter download for us so we can convert our old save to be compatible with the new ones?

At this point, I hope the devs spend a short time version-marking any saves, and when a char wipe occurs, preventing any sort of rescue attempt from reloading old ones.

I can just see it now:

Bug Report: Starbound crashes when I do.... (bug report details)

Hour or several of developer trying to pin down bug, asking for more details.

Eventual Reply: Well I patched the game, rescued my character/universe/items/whatever after you wiped them, and when I used such and such, it crashed.

Developer facepalms, deletes bug-report, and goes back to working on making the game better.

My characters are gone, it's v. Annoyed Koala I think. Was there a wipe?

It's most assuredly cheating. That's just not what someone like that leads with in a forum post when they're trying to pull sympathy stings.

I have beaten the game already. I welcome all your save wipes. It takes only a day to get to impervium!

This isn't practical to a full extent in the face of 'people' (imagine I'm saying that with hesitation) willing to deliberately modify character (and other) files in order to load them post-patch.
