The Upcoming Save Wipes

I was thinking that if we are going to have our saves wiped during the beta like this, there could be a way to please those who are upset about losing their rare and hard to attain valuables. I had two ideas.

One: Store a raw inventory file along with player saves. A special backup file that is just a list of item IDs that represent a player'a inventory. These files would not be changed in big, wiping patches and could be used to replace a newly created character's inventory.

Two: Get the item spawning commands in. Some people are willing to cheat to get back to where they were and I think they should be allowed to if they are willing to cheat.

 

1: The issue with this, is this save wipe in particular, may/will introduce an entirely different system for weapons, which means all of your old weapons would be obsolete and broken horribly, which may crash your game if you try to back them up.
2: I'd be fine with this, right after I get server commands/protection. So that I can safe-guard a server from things like this, and people who join with a ton of modded stuff, I tend to watch carefully who is on my server etc, but I do work, and my friends sometimes invite their friends etc. I'd at least like to force server-side characters. =/

 

Yes, I think that server commands should be absolute top priority right now. It's risky to release even a beta without basic server commands like banning.

 

I don't think it's necessarily cheating so much as it's reclaiming items....but I agree, for the people who want to keep their items and stuff they should be allowed to. I honestly don't care though: It's fun to explore what you get each time.
Honestly I wanted to delete my first two character's anyways. I just didn't care for them in the end.

 

I'm heavily against this. I've collected numerous 45 Armor Pen weapons and have the Impervium armor just like a lot of people do, but this is beta and a -huge- portion of the content has been skipped so we can test things. I should not have access to all of this so soon just because the tiers between the early and end game weren't implemented.

The one thing you -do- get to keep is your knowledge and experience of the game and you get to use it to your advantage.

The other simple fact is: It was clearly stated that characters/saved will be wiped, why are people trying to come up with methods not to lose their characters? You chose to play in this beta phase, you weren't forced to.

 

We should realize, that any work on such things diverts resources from actually finishing the game.

Also, we were warned that our characters were going to get erased. It's part of being in the beta.

 

I completely agree with this. As the game nears launch, I intend on hosting a fairly decent sized server. However, I'd like it if the character data was server-side.

Hopefully they'll consider making it an option.

 

I'm not trying to "Save" characters here. I'm trying to make resets more bearable. The ways of getting your items back would be there for those who want it and those who don't could simply ignore it.

 

You guys could just go to your game folders, and copy/paste your save data elsewhere.

the flaw in that being the updates could be incompatible with our back-ups..

 

Yes, the problem isn't the saves becoming corrupted or anything, but rather the newly updated game will be unable to read the old data file.

 

Guess we'll have to try it to find out~

I'm kind of glad for the save wipes. This will give me a reason to finally create a new character (I've been playing the same character I made since release).

 

I'm not sure why this is a thing for anyone at this point. They said, before we got our hands on the beta, that there were going to be wipes in the first phase. He said there is a very good chance there will be multiple wipes and that if you were the kind of person who didn't want to go through that you should just wait until that part of the beta was over.
Like many of you I've pretty much played the game nonstop and it's really going to suck starting over, but let's face facts it's going to happen, and they will not go and restock us every time they do an update that will force a wipe. There's nothing wrong with hoping I guess, but at this point it's nothing but blind optimism.

 

I don't mind wiping out gear. Gear tweaks tend to be the culprit of brokenness.

Stuff that don't change like stone, wood, food, ore ect technically shouldn't be affected much. I don't mind turning a fridge into a safe heaven for food, for example.

 

It won't be that one thing won't work and others will.. It's the fact that major changes to how the game works will render your save file unreadable by the game and thus you will need to start anew.

 

It's true. But I was thinking if you ditched all your weapons and armour but held onto your crafting materials, etc. Your save might come through unscathed.

 

i was basing my info on what mollygos and other dev's have stated that dont become too attached to beta stage 1 or beta stage 2 because character wipes are certain to test aspects and bug fixes that game-break Prime example being the boss flying off to attack birds.

character wipe theory is they are fixing the armour/levelign system which affects our characters hence the need for a wipe.
